2 students shot outside Colorado middle school

LITTLETON, Colo. - Teachers tackled and subdued a man armed with a rifle after he shot two teenage students yesterday at a suburban Denver middle school just miles from Columbine High School, the site of one of the nation's deadliest school shootings.

Student Steven Seagraves said a man approached the victims and asked, "Do you guys go to this school?" When the students said they did, he shot them.

Seventh-grade math teacher David Benke, a 6-foot-5 former college basketball player and track team coach, tackled the man as he was trying to reload.

"He couldn't get another round in before I got to him, so I grabbed him," Benke said, recalling that he didn't have time to fear for his life.

A male and a female student were shot at about 3:30 p.m. outside Deer Creek Middle School in Littleton, police spokeswoman Jacki Kelley said. Both students were taken to a nearby hospital and were expected to survive.

Students were boarding buses after school when the shooting took place. Police said the shooter, whose name was not released, is 32 years old and doesn't appear to have any connection to the school.

The school is three miles from Columbine High School, where teens Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris killed 12 students and a teacher and wounded 23 others before killing themselves in 1999.

Is a guy walking around with a rifle a normal sight in the US? I mean, I suppose it's not something you can easily conceal, and the way the story is presented, the guy simply walked to the victims then asked them questions, and then shot them - it's surprising noone tackled him by then.

On the other hand though, if a man walks up to you with a rifle and asks you something, most people would be inclined to entertain his request.

Not sure why but this has had me laughing to myself for a couple of minutes now.  Not horribly funny but just got me in the right spot.  :D

No, not unless it's hunting season in a rural area.

Unlike what Cal has suggested, people routinely walk around with rifles in America's cities.

Not in cities, people generally carry sub machine guns.

In Poland, this went on for years, and no one tackled the dudes with rifles even after they fired.

Guys with rifles are not a common sight in the US, but they are not unknown.  Generally, people are not tackled for having a rifle.

Poland, I am sure, is different.  So we can understand your confusion, please share with us the stories of all the tackles you have made in the past coupla years, and the reasons you had for making each one.

If I buy a rifle at a shop, I have to at least walk with it to my car. What if I don't have a car? I have to take it on the subway.  :P

No biggie.

No, but then again I have never, during my entire life, and having travelled many countries, seen anyone in the street who would be carrying a visible weapon and who would not be a law enforcement officer or a member of the military.

But imagine you were in a country in a state of anarchy where regular people had guns such as the US or Somalia. Would it be logical to rush an armed man who wasn't paying any particular attention to you, because they *might* cause some trouble? Seems to me that action would encourage the behavior you're trying to prevent.

Does he get a pink card, or is it a personal foul for illegal mincing?

Hence my question, which was aimed at establishing whether the US is a country in a state of anarchy (i.e. a country where civilians, who are not obviously criminals, carry non-concealed weapons in public) or not. I have received an ample feedback. :)

15 yards for mincing, and ejection for feltching.
