Indirectly inspired by Martinus' latest gay thread, what are your favorite artists, and your specific favorite painting?
My favorites are Egon Schiele, Gustav Klimt, El Greco, Lissitzky, Malevich, Bosch, Kandinsky, Duchamp, Picasso, Botticelli, Max Ernst, de Chirico, Boccioni, Goya, Blake and Konstantin Yuon. I enjoy Ilya Repin and Courbet, but I tend to stay clear of visual arts in the Victorian period.
If forced, my top three are probably Schiele, Greco and El Lissitzky. Please don't murder me on the last one.
As you can probably guess, my primary areas of interest are all 1400-1620 or 1905-1925. No slavish adherence to realism, and somehow even artists like Klimt, who built on three thousand years of Western art, manage to make everything feel fresh. I like the early Romantics for the same reason. Also a fan of Byzantine and Russian traditional art, Persian miniature as well as traditional Japanese wood painting. Used to be a big fan of The New Objectivity, but went to an exhibit at the Met a few years ago while stoned and felt really, really sick for a week, as the paintings are just too goddamn disturbing to actually like. I've yet to find a lot of art from after 1950 that I like, although I love Execution by Yue Minjun.
My favorite painting is

Nude descending a staircase by Duchamp. Honorable mentions go to Greco's The Assumption of the Virgin (which I have had the pleasure of seeing many times in Chicago), Anything with Two Chicks Doing It by Egon Schiele, and The Birth of Venus by Botticelli. Mostly because he manages to fit in more visual metaphors for sex in to a canvas than a group of 12 year old boys could even imagine.
Rembrandt, The Night Watch.
I heavily favor the Baroque-era artists as my favorite, specifically Anthony van Dyck for his extensive portrait work of various monarchs of the period (and before).
One of the best, though I'm undecided if it's my favorite by him, is the famed triple portrait of Charles I :

Some I like:
Anders Zorn
Nicholas Roerich
Salvador Dali
Rembrandt
John Bauer
I'm not that big on paintings, but Impresionism is my favourite period by far.
katmai is huge on paintings.
I like the work of the Group of Seven. :Canuck:

Your time in the Navy must have been really weird.
My favorite period looks kinda like this . It's much better then those bloody ones the ladies have.
grumbler was actually a model for the Gericault painting.

Like Quee I'm a big El Greco and Duchamps fan. I'm also fond of Saenredam:
(https://languish.org/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fupload.wikimedia.org%2Fwikipedia%2Fcommons%2Fc%2Fc6%2F%2527Interior_of_the_Buurkerk%252C_Utrecht%2527%252C_oil_on_panel_painting_by_Pieter_Janszoon_Saenredam.jpg&hash=4f5dd6c972b09e612576c8ea9fbae11e83e21d8c)
I'd also throw in some Rothko and Francis Bacon. Weirdly loads of Francis Bacon paintings are currently stuck in Iran. The Shah's wife loved collecting modern art and was a big Bacon fan (no wonder there was an Islamic revolution) while the Islamic Republic is less keen on him for a number of reasons.
Giotto. Anything after is too modern for my taste.
Took me a while to think about it (I'm not that big on visual arts to be honest), but out of artists, I like Caravaggio a lot. Also, the Raft of Medusa (thanks to grumbler for a reminder) is one of my favourite paintings, too. Looks amazing in the Louvre.
Despite my allonym, my favorite periods are the Italian Renaissance and subsequent Mannerist movement.
I have a number of post cards at my cubicle with pictrues of works of art that I have seen. The ones that get the most comments are the ones of the Cappuchin Cemetery where the bones of deceased monks were used to build chapels. (:o) Second only to that is Benozzo Gozzoli's Journey of the Magi:

Though I love loads of different artists and periods, I've got a very soft spot for Paolo Ucello's "Battle of San Romano" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Battle_of_San_Romano (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Battle_of_San_Romano)), a mid XVth piece depicting a battle between Florence and Siena, which follows the Florentine army in the different stages of the battle.
It's a triptic, with one piece in the Uffizzi of Florence, another in the Louvre in Paris and another one in London's National Gallery, and one of the earliest big commisions with a secular motif, as well as a landmark in the development of perspective in paintings.
Edit: Huge pictures removed, way too big for the thread. Just follow the link to see them.

I also like the old German ( I think) guy who also did that show, way back when.
As far as periods or movements go, there are too many for me to say I have a Fave. i have faves from every period I'm aware of though.
I like a lot of modern stuff, like Richard Atilla Lukacs, Robt Williams, etc, as well as Dali, Picasso.... Van Gogh, probably would top any list I made of painters. I also really like Goya's War etchings, William Blake, Gaugin, Klimt, Matisse, Leonardo, Michelangelo, Hiroshige.etc et al....
There's so much great art.
Seriously though (though I do think Bob Ross is ok)...I generally prefer the "realism" artists like Rembrandt, and other such types.
Picasso's style and others, such as Sarte(probably bad form to use them in the same breath), just looks like a bunch of poorly-painted crap to me. But taste in art is one of the most subjective things in the universe, so I would never give someone crap for a differing opinion.

Resurrecting this oldish thread as I wanted something arty to post this in - but didn't think it warranted its own thread.
Met Museum has now put up high-res versions of 400k of works from its collection for free download.

QuoteThe Metropolitan Museum of Art makes 400,000 iconic works available for download
If you've ever wanted to wallpaper your living room with the work of the old masters, now's your chance. The Metropolitan Museum of Art this month released an astounding 394,000 high-resolution images to the public. Visitors to the Met's website can sort images by artist, medium, location, and era, and freely download images that are generally at least 10 megapixels in size.
The Met's collection is one of the most extensive in the world, with more than 500 Picassos available for download, along with dozens of paintings from Monet, Van Gogh, and Degas. Aside from European painters, the collection also includes photographs of Aztec stonework, Greek sculpture, and Chinese calligraphy. Looking for an image of a 200-year old spittoon from India? It's yours.
Museums have traditionally been resistant to reproducing their collection, citing worries about forgery, loss of revenue, and lessening the value of the originals through cheap merchandising. The Smithsonian has more than 1.2 million images, film and audio clips available online, but many are posted at low resolution to discourage commercial use. However, as the proliferation of images-sharing sites and ventures like Google Art Project have brought more digital copies of artwork to the web, museums are starting to provide their own high-quality images to fight back against low-res knock-offs.
The images from the Met are intended for students, educators, researchers, and creators of non-commercial content. Those wanting to use one of the Met's images for commercial reasons will still have to license them from the museum. Still, there has never been a better time to snag a gorgeous new desktop background — or to class up your apartment on the cheap.
