Getting in early (as is traditional) as my training for the Marathon began in earnest today. Managed a seven mile run with walk breaks, as per my plan. It's the furthest I've ever managed, and actually managed to average a faster pace than just running without feeling exhausted, so I think this method will suit me just fine. :)
Keener. My plan is to continue my glacially slow ascent to being in good shape... coming this year: exercise.
My plan is to lose 100 pounds by Summer.
I want to lose at least 10 pounds by mid-late January, then 10 more over the following month or two. I've finally found a gym near me and I'll be getting a membership there, so hopefully I'll be successful.
I've also been using the food log at FitDay (http://fitday.com/); it gives a good idea of how much calories I'm eating per day.
I am NOT going to lose another 50lbs this year. That was last year. Instead, I plan to keep that weight off.

Sell your body fat for facial cream.
Take the $200 to the bank and buy £100.
Then lose the £100.
That is the only way you are going to lose 100 pounds without killing yourself or surgery.

Though there would also have been a risk of losing too much weight :(
I think I would like to start running this year.

Start off with running just one minute (as slow as you need) and walking four for a total of half an hour three times a week. Next week, do two minutes and walk three and so on. Before you know it, you'll be running two miles in half an hour and you can build it from there :)
Oh, and get proper running shoes. Even more important if, like me, you're a bit overweight

I thought she weighed more than that.
For some reason I keep injuring myself when I do the running machines. I am not even going very fast. Compared with other people in the same room, I'm usually the slowest one. I don't even run, just walk at a fast pace. Every time I raise the speed settings past a certain point, the spot at the back side of one knee will feel pain. It isn't too bad, so I can tolerate it for 30-40 minutes. But afterwards the pain won't go away for 2-3 days, and sometimes it gets progressively worse.
I feel that the running machines are getting easier for me, and I really want to run faster to lose some weight. But this issue keeps bothering me.

Try an elliptical machine. They tend to be a lot less impact.
Also, go see a fucking doctor. There is something wrong with your knee.

When I use the bicycle machines, I feel as if there is a sharp needle inside both of my knees. I can never sustain more than 2 minutes.
I only see a doctor if I absolutely have to. A knee problem doesn't fall into that definition ;)

I've clocked myself walking briskly at 16 minutes / mile, so I'd say no. As slow a jog as I can reasonably manage is about 12 minutes / mile.
Yeah, 4 mph is a swift walk for those with long legs.

1. I don't feel any problem in everyday life.
2. I don't see how a GP can give a meaningful opinion on this kind of problem. If I have to see a doctor, I'm going to see a specialist, physical therapist or what have you. Some random GP in a random hospital won't cut it.
3. Specialists are either expensive (in private practice) or I have to wait a couple of years to see him (in free public hospitals).

Did 40 mins as per schedule today plus some core work and stretching. In deference to the freezing drizzle, jogged to the gym and did most of it on the dreadmill.
Finally figured out a way to stop the knee pain from happening.
I slowed down the machine a little when I start to feel it.
Then I turned it back up a bit after a while. Rinse and repeat.

Well, I knew brazen would have started this thread. How about if my goal is to walk and/or run at least 3 times a week? Yeah, that should be a good goal, get back to running.
Every year I do this, and every year I fail. :(
This year will be different any number of ways, though, starting with I now have a job that requires that I be on my feet and moving for roughly eight hours a day, rather than sitting on my bum at a computer. In addition, there will be a good bit more traveling that will require heavy lifting to get things set up and ready to go.
So, with that additional exercise from work, my only real goal is to cut back on portion sizes, increase fruits and vegetable servings, and limit sweets. The last may be difficult since I work in a candy factory, but the rest should be easy enough.

Rubbish :D
Are you looking at my bum? Bum-looker! Cheeky monkey!
Reduced mileage long run this week. Six hilly miles walk/run. Very slow, but wasn't exhausted at the end and took the hills in my stride. Most of the niggling pain from when I started training in earnest have gone now.
Despite my best efforts (including a couple of pints of Guinness, pizza and red wine yesterday) I'm still losing weight - 4lbs since the beginning of the Christmas break. Being vastly overweight does mean the old calories burn off quickly.
My friend and I have decided to work out one hour every morning. We'll be using Jillian Michaels' DVDs, Dance Your Way to Fitness, Yoga, and a few other tapes. The idea is to mix it up so that we're not doing the same thing over and over again, and so that we don't get bored.
By the way, she introduced me to Comcast On Demand - and it's wonderful! Even if she's not here, I can find a fitness show to follow along with. Yay!
I am thinking about trying Pilates. Tough to find the time though, since I am gone 3-5 nights a week doing basketball games though.
35 minutes of belly dancing this morning

Yeah, but it is only one particular type of exercise.
Only managed 20 minutes of my scheduled 40 minute treadmill run today due to what I shall euphemistically refer to as "digestive distress"...
On Sunday I did eight miles at run 3, walk 2 minutes. Longest run EVAH!
It was freezing slush underfoot, and I have to confess I seriously wobbled over this one. I had contemplated doing it all on the dreadmill, but I find it so much harder, hotter and boring than real life. I considered finding a flat, clear road and running up and down it, but couldn't track down even a mile's worth. I thought seriously about giving up.
But I strapped on my new shoes with my extra bouncy insoles, dug out my Garmin, cued up The News Quiz and headed out towards what passes for countryside hereabouts.
After less than a mile, the dry pavements ran out. The first slug of slush that I kicked up onto my shiny white uppers soaked straight through my socks. Not long after, things got more rural, pavements got narrower, the way got more hilly and the slush got deeper, slippier and more in my shoes.
My half-way turning point hadn't come when I ran out of footpath entirely, so I diverted through the golf club for a bit. Deserted and white as far as the eye could see. I'd have relished it more if it hadn't started snowing again at that point...
The Garmin stopped receiving the satellite signal and refused to try again after 6.93 miles, so just as well I was doing an out-n-back and was past halfway! My phone seems more reliable at getting location signals (it uses wi-fi too), but it's a bit bulky when I want to travel light.
I came back numb from the waist downward and it took a half hour bath to feel human again. My new shoes look like they've lived a little now.
Disappointingly it took me a full two hours – the pace of a fast walk. But given the conditions I'm bloomin' proud of myself for doing it at all. I'm slightly dreading the fact it's just going to get further and harder every week until April though :S
Will start my marathon training with a little vacation to Tenerife, bikes will be rented and we shall tour the island with 100km every day, 60km on mountain stages. Should be tough and fun.
New longest run EVAH - 9 miles at run 3 mins, walk 2 in 2hrs 11 and a half minutes. This makes my average speed 14.36 min miles or 4.1mph - at least it's a bit faster than walking :Embarrass:
For some reason I keep injuring myself. My knees now seem to behave. But the side/back of the torso is in trouble. After using the Strider machine for 30 minutes, every time I move there is intense pain.
I'm seriously considering setting up a tiny gym at home (bench, dumbells, whatever I can fit on such a small space). Anyone has any experience or advice?

I considered buying a small running machine. One look at the living room convinced me that I don't have that kind of space.
Advice: buy a bigger place.
been really slack on the food front lately. cold dark and rainy weather has kept me indoors this winter. Starting today, less lazy from me. Less snacking. My evening snack attacks have been getting cleverer and more enticing recently. I really don't want to start packing on the weight again. So, if I don't go for a walk, run etc, then I'm doing the step machine at home whenever I get the snack urge in the evenings.
It's tough trying to change a lifetime of sedentary-ness sometimes I stumble and fall back, but unlike the pre-high BP days I catch myself now and put a halt to the madness before I get back up over my goal weight which I achieved last year.
Beach 2010 here I come. :)
Today I joined "Pure" - a gym/sauna/bath, which is apparently one of the most high end fitness clubs in Warsaw. It also advertises actively on gay websites. I got a discount membership on a referral programme from a current member, who happens to be my last Friday's date. Active sports life here I come. :showoff: :boff:
Due to some gallbladder issues, I'm on a low-fat, lean meat diet that doesn't include caffeine or chocolate for the next 21 days. It does, however, include copious amounts of lemon juice, apples and apple juice. Yay?
I've also been exercising no less than four days a week. Not seriously killing myself, but certainly getting my heart rate up and putting my muscles through the wringer. And all of it is starting to pay off. I think I'm actually getting a waist again. ^_^
So I started playing basketball again on Sunday mornings, and did something to the somethingatic nerve in my lower right back, just before XMas. Excruciatingly painful, I must say. This is actually a re-injury of an old injury, from a couple years ago.
Had to take about a week off of officiating, which sucked rocks. It felt a bit better, so I started reffing again.
Did the same thing while reffing a game about a week ago. Not quite as bad this time, still had to turn in a weekends worth of games.
Saw the doc, she said I had a chronic injury that was going keep flaring up. Basically there is something structural about my lower back on that side, and it would be prone to injury until I strengthened it. However, I cannot strengthen it until the immediate injury is resolved, because there is too much inflammation and swelling.
She told me to take the rest of the eyar off from officiating, let the immediate injury heal, THEN do some physical therapy (she recommended Yoga and then Pilates), THEN start up activity again.
Taking the rest of the season off isn't an option though, so I am just going to do my best to take it easy during games, and avoid sudden changes in direction, and hope for the best.
back problems really suck.
I ate half a pecan pie yesterday.
Today, I've consumed 2 glasses of orange juice and a glass of the foulest sangria I've ever made (:(). ^_^
Did a very slow 10 miler last week at 3 mins running, 1 walking, mainly because the way out was almost entirely uphill which left me with nothing in the tank coming back.
This week did 12 miles at 2 mins running, 2 walking, total time 2 hours 57. My average speed was faster than last week even though less of it was running!
Seems 4.1 mph average is my go-too speed as I've done this for nearly all my long runs except last week, which I think puts me in for a 6 hour 20 Marathon. That's a bit depressing.

Losing weight without dieting is a bad omen, J.
One more week of high school basketball, then I think I am going to be in physical therapy for my back.
Once that is better, I think I am going to start running. I would like to run in the annual Rochester Corporate Challenge this year. Never done anything like that before though, so we will have to see. Plenty of people just walk it, so it's not like any big deal or anything.

I've lost three pounds this week from running. I'm not paying too much attention to my diet, though I'm working pretty hard on staying to natural foods rather than processed, and decreasing my portion sizes.
How's everyone else doing?
I was going to the gym 4 times a week.... until Final exams came :(.
My goal is 180lbs... I'm just putting that out there... now I can be held responsible haha.
My latest theory on why my knees are so prone to injury -
QuoteSome people have hypermobility with no other symptoms or medical conditions. However, people with hypermobility syndrome may experience many difficulties. For example, their joints may be easily injured, be more prone to complete dislocation due to the weakly stabilized joint and they may develop problems from muscle fatigue (as muscles must work harder to compensate for the excessive weakness in the ligaments that support the joints).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypermobility
Yes, I can bend all my fingers and thumbs backward, and I can lock all my fingers.
QuoteFinger locking is the act of locking the middle joint of a finger in place, and then bending the very last joint independently from the others. It is a rare ability, and the majority of the population cannot do so.
I am extremely proud of these special abilities, and I have yet to encounter anyone in real life who can perform these feats. I have no idea until now that there are possible downsides :weep:
Two of my four kids are hypermobile, Mono. They can do the finger locking thing, and one of them has dislocated her elbow by simply being pulled on. We were told when they were really small to make sure that they exercise regularly to build up the muscles around the joints for support and do not become overweight, as that stress on their already-stressed joints will result in a great deal of pain and damage.
Time to hit the gym, Mono? You can get support braces for your knees and ankles that will help stabilize them while you're working out.
Down 12 for Feb. Hope to lose 10 more by Easter, or at least 8. Have to find the balance of cutting back enough to lose weight but not so much that I just fuck up my metabolism and gain it all back again.
Going to the gymn 3-6 hours a week too. I'm all like limber now.

I am already hitting the gym at least twice a week. It is during these trips that I discover how weak my knees seem to be. I guess it is a little late to know that I shouldn't become overweight
I can overcome some of the knee problems with exercise. When I first did the running machines, I set the speed at 5.0. When I cranked it up to 5.4, I just couldn't go on because my knees would become so painful. With a little persistance, I am now doing 5.8 with ease. I still can't survive any cyclying machines for more than 2 minutes, though. I feel as though there is a sharp needle in each of my knees when I do those.
Never heard of knee bracers. May try them if I run out of options
My father can lock his fingers, but cannot bend them backward. I can do both. If I have children, I hope the evolutionary trend continues and they can bend their knees backward :cthulu:
You need to do strengthening exercises, not just aerobic exercise. Try squats, lunges and step-ups with knee lifts on a bench.
My runs are so long know I've come to dread them as they bore me rigid and ruin my entire weekend. Half Marathon in two weeks then the full Monty in seven :o
My fundraising playlist is coming along nicely though :)
I need to do some research on what those words mean and how to do them properly.
I have been walking some with no schedule at all, I had to run a 2 mile indian run this weekend and my legs are still screaming at me to get back into a running schedule so I won't be this damn soire. I guess today is as good as any to start back up.
