I think I would like to start running this year.

From what?
I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011

Same. Well, my mind does. My lungs and my legs disagree.

If those fat bastards on Biggest Loser can run a fucking marathon, we can manage to go out and run a mile or two.
Start off with running just one minute (as slow as you need) and walking four for a total of half an hour three times a week. Next week, do two minutes and walk three and so on. Before you know it, you'll be running  two miles in half an hour and you can build it from there :)

Oh, and get proper running shoes. Even more important if, like me, you're a bit overweight

My plan is to lose 100 pounds by Summer.

I thought she weighed more than that.

For some reason I keep injuring myself when I do the running machines.  I am not even going very fast.  Compared with other people in the same room, I'm usually the slowest one.  I don't even run, just walk at a fast pace.  Every time I raise the speed settings past a certain point, the spot at the back side of one knee will feel pain.  It isn't too bad, so I can tolerate it for 30-40 minutes.  But afterwards the pain won't go away for 2-3 days, and sometimes it gets progressively worse.

I feel that the running machines are getting easier for me, and I really want to run faster to lose some weight.  But this issue keeps bothering me.

Does two miles in half an hour count as "running"?

Try an elliptical machine. They tend to be a lot less impact.

Also, go see a fucking doctor. There is something wrong with your knee.

When I use the bicycle machines, I feel as if there is a sharp needle inside both of my knees.  I can never sustain more than 2 minutes.

I only see a doctor if I absolutely have to.  A knee problem doesn't fall into that definition  ;)

S' stepfather was that way until he got stuck in a manhole while working for a local municipal utility company.  What he had thought was just bad knees turned out to be Becker's muscular dystrophy.  Just saying, "knee problems" are rarely minor. ;)

I've clocked myself walking briskly at 16 minutes / mile, so I'd say no. As slow a jog as I can reasonably manage is about 12 minutes / mile.

I'm embarrassed. I've been making the mistake of associating with you. It won't happen again. :)

Yeah, 4 mph is a swift walk for those with long legs.

I agree.  Chronic pain like that should be checked out by a doctor.

1. I don't feel any problem in everyday life.
2. I don't see how a GP can give a meaningful opinion on this kind of problem.  If I have to see a doctor, I'm going to see a specialist, physical therapist or what have you.  Some random GP in a random hospital won't cut it.
3. Specialists are either expensive (in private practice) or I have to wait a couple of years to see him (in free public hospitals).
