Title: NFL Week 15: Chris Henry Deathwatch
Post by: CountDeMoney on December 17, 2009, 05:25:08 AM
Indy plays Jax tonight on the NFL Network.  Go Colts.  Teams that can't fill their stadiums don't deserve the playoffs.

Meanwhile, from the world of fashion...

Quote
The Ravens will wear black jerseys with white pants Sunday, when they play the Chicago Bears at M&T Bank Stadium, a team official confirmed Wednesday.

It's the first time that the Ravens will put on their alternate uniforms this season. The Ravens decided to go from the all-black combination (jersey and pants) last season because first-year coach John Harbaugh didn't like how it looked.

The only time the Ravens have worn the black jersey with white pants was Dec. 7, 2008, when the Ravens beat the Washington Redskins, 24-10.

Thank Christ.  Those black-on-black uniforms make them look like Billy Blank unitards.

Not only that, but they'd lose every time they wore them.  I think that Ravens couldn't locate each other on the field, due to their ninja-like outfits.

Isn't the Bears kit Black Jersey with White Pants?

Henry has passed away.

http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=ap-bengals-henry&prov=ap&type=lgns

QuoteCHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP)—Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say Cincinnati Bengals receiver Chris Henry has died, one day after suffering serious injuries upon falling out of the back of a pickup truck in what authorities describe as a domestic dispute with his fiancee.

Police say Henry died at 6:36 a.m. Thursday. Henry was 26.

Away from the team because of a broken forearm, Henry was rushed to the hospital Wednesday after being found on a residential road. Police say a dispute began at a home about a half-mile away, and Henry jumped into the bed of the pickup truck as his fiancee was driving away from the residence.

Police said at some point when she was driving, Henry "came out of the back of the vehicle."

Chris Henry is dead at age 26.  http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=4750615

Really sucks, because it seemed like he was getting his life back on track.  I've followed him pretty closely since his first year at WVU and he had more than his fair share of problems-- or to put it more bluntly he repeatedly acted stupidly and got himself into unnecessary trouble.  But from the limited interaction I had with him, he always seemed like a decent guy.  I last (briefly) spoke to him at the "family cookout" at training camp in August-- he had his mom, fiancee, & 3 kids up with him.

RIP.  Could have been one of the great ones.

Btw, thanks for the tasteful thread title, Seedy.

To hell the Ochocinco name to begin with-- I always thought it was a ridiculous (if quite successful) publicity stunt.  He's still Chad Johnson as far as I'm concerned.

But it was just as ridiculous the way Spanish teachers made a big deal that he decided not to go with "Ochenta y Cinco", which just rolls off the tongue of non-Spanish speakers & also would probably look great on a jersey

Only one reigning Super Bowl champion has ever lost 5 in a row the following season, and that was the 87 Giants, who had scab players during the strike.  LULZ A MELTDOWN OF BIBLICAL PROPORTIONS

And now, they turn on the media.  That's right, the same media that gives you a gazillion Steelers commercials, ad campaigns and primetime coverage.  ZOMG LIFE ISNT FAIRE

QuoteTwo Steelers defensive backs have taken offense with media coverage of the team and the secondary, in particular.

On Wednesday, free safety Ryan Clark called reporters that cover the team "turds," and cornerback Ike Taylor said he feels betrayed by the Pittsburgh media.

"We just don't understand how the national media don't bash us, but our local media do," Taylor said. "This has been going on since the (Kansas City) game, how y'all have been writing. We're like, 'Dang, if you're going to write something, write the whole story — offense, defense and special teams.' If you're going to write something, don't pick a particular position out and what changes you think need to be made because it's unfair to the player.

"It's totally unfair, and we've already got enough pressure on us in the secondary anyway just for the tradition we have over here. We feel like if y'all are going to write something, state facts, don't state opinions."

The Steelers have yielded a handful of big passing plays during the five-game skid that has left them with a remote chance of making the playoffs. Taylor, however, pointed out that in spite of the Steelers' recent struggles, they are still No. 4 in the NFL in total defense (294.1 yards per game).

Taylor said he is "fed up" with media's portrayal of the Steelers and their secondary.

A somewhat surprising source said he has had enough of it as well. Clark has been such a cooperative player for reporters that last year he won the Chief Award, named after team founder Art Rooney.

The sixth-year veteran specifically mentioned the award yesterday and said he won't win it again if he returns to the Steelers after this season.

That came during a 12-minute session with reporters in which the normally gregarious Clark vented about a number of issues, including his belief that the media is harder on the Steelers here than in other NFL markets.

"You watch the Eagles, you watch the big plays given up (in a 45-38 win over the Giants), and I started checking other media outlets and you don't hear the things about them in their media that you hear about us," said Clark, who is in the final year of his contract. "So either we're held to higher standards, or the people that write about us are turds."

Clark said he has gotten hate mail since the Steelers went into a slump, and he posted one of the letters on a bulletin board in the locker room. As Clark referenced the letter yesterday, a Steelers representative hastily took it down.

"Do we deserve to be talked about as disappointing? Yes we do, because we are disappointed in ourselves," Clark said. "But I think sometimes the coverage of it, especially, locally, has been ... I'm not going to say it's unfair, but it's just been wrong."

Clark's primary objection: He said players have been getting blamed for on-field mistakes that are not their fault.

He and Taylor said a general lack of understanding of the Steelers' schemes among the media has led to players getting wrongly fingered for some of the breakdowns that have occurred.

"Y'all don't know. Period," Clark said. "I think it's gotten to the point where guys are getting attacked personally, names are being called and things like that when sometimes it's not those people. But that is your job. I got a job to do. Maybe if I can get a blog or start tweeting, I can learn all y'all guys' names and talk about all y'all."

Taylor said local reporters don't appreciate how successful the Steelers have been and are overly hard on the team.

"If y'all probably would have went to another team or somewhere else and seen the difference between their secondary and our secondary, y'all's perspective might be different," Taylor said. "But since we've been holding it down for so long, staying on top overall as a defense and as a team, it's totally unfair how you write about us."

But wait, there's more!  Roflsburger versus Bettis!

QuoteSteelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger responded to comments Thursday that former teammate Jerome Bettis made on a syndicated radio program that the Steelers' season "is basically over'' following their 13-6 loss to the Cleveland Browns.

"When you lose your spirit, then everything is pretty much gone,'' Bettis said on the Dan Patrick Show. "It tells me the leadership isn't there.''

Said Roethlisberger: "I guess he's entitled to his opinion. He's not on this team, he's not in this locker room, so he's just taking an outside view as all of you (media) guys are. If you don't know, I don't think you should speak on it.''

Roethlisberger addressed a number of topics yesterday during his weekly session with the media, including the Steelers' five-game losing streak — the longest of his football career.

"Not in high school, not here, and I don't think so in college,'' Roethlisberger said. "For me, you get upset, you get disappointed. I hate losing more than anything. You have to play your best football to try to get out of it.''

Yeah, but this is the same team that the Dolphins had a 21 point lead on, the Redskins forced into overtime, and the Falcons almost beat.
And each time, the Saints pulled it off.  Besides, the Dolphins are a tough team with potential to make the playoffs in the AFC, the Redskins aren't so much terrible as they are wildly inconsistant, even from play to play, and the Falcons are a divisional opponent who plays the Saints tough.  Compare that to the Cowboys, the eternal chokeartists, a Tampa team that has returned to Creamsicle levels of ineptitude and a Panthers team that has driven off a cliff.

When did they say that?  Everything I've ever heard from Indy was that they're focused on the playoffs - and besides when they were in this same position a few years ago they rested players.

You shouldn't be acknowledging him, as he is referring to football uniforms as "kit".  Shit isn't soccer, don't use soccer terms.

Why the hell should I dignify anything the Bears do?
Truth.  Since trading Kyle Orton, they have been a model of failure.  I forgive and endorse your calling their uniforms kit now.

Word on the street is that the game will be delayed until the afternoon due to a snowstorm.  That should increase the importance of the running game, which will in turn ensure that Cutler throws multiple interceptions in order to get some attention.

Speaking of the cowgirls if the Saints pound that ass this weekend, as they should, the Saints will only have to beat Tampa and Carolina to finish 16-0.
The Saints are almost a lock on 16-0.  All they have to do is to beat 3 non-playoff teams.

And, in true Saints fashion, they'll win home field advantage, and promptly lose the game to the Vikes or the Eagles.

Yup, they've pushed the game to 4:15pm, in anticipation of the dumping we're due tomorrow.  18" to 20" is forcast from midnight tonight through midnight Saturday for Mobtown.  Probably isn't much compared to what you see in Soviet Canuckistan, but here it's The Day The Earth Stood Still.

I will be in attendance on Sunday.

Finally, the Bears get to town.

QuoteBears land in Baltimore
M&T Bank Stadium will be ready for 4:15 p.m. kickoff Sunday

After two days of travel difficulties for the Chicago Bears, the Ravens are still scheduled to kick off against the late-arriving NFC North team at 4:15 p.m. Sunday at M&T Bank Stadium, an NFL official said.

A record snowstorm for this area and airplane troubles forced the Bears to rearrange their schedule Friday and Saturday. Their flight arrived at Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport at about 10:50 p.m., only 17 hours before kickoff in what is a critical game for the Ravens' playoff hopes.

About 700 workers, who stayed at M&T Bank Stadium's club suites Friday night and Saturday night, pushed the massive amount of snow from the top of the stadium down to the field, where it was hauled and dumped into a nearby waterway. The field and stadium will be ready for kickoff for the team's final regular-season home game, Ravens vice president of operations Bob Eller confirmed.

The Bears (5-8) tried to avoid the weather and fly out a day early, but the team's flight Friday night was canceled because of a mechanical problem, a source told the Chicago Tribune. An attempt to change planes was called off when the window to arrive safely in Baltimore had closed. According to the Tribune, the Bears didn't arrive back at their facility until 1:15 a.m. Saturday.

Chicago's attempts to fly into Baltimore on Saturday were hampered by the heavy snowfall. The winter storm closed BWI in the afternoon, which delayed the Bears' departure to around 9 p.m. Eastern.

While the snow caused havoc with the Bears' schedule, it didn't alter the Ravens' normal Saturday routine.

Players attended a 7:30 a.m. meeting at team headquarters and conducted a 30-minute walkthrough, Ravens spokesman Kevin Byrne said. All players and coaches made it to the Owings Mills complex, according to Byrne. Several players drove to the downtown hotel after the walkthrough. The Ravens always stay at a nearby hotel as a team the night before a home game.

Ravens officials said the NFL never approached the team to move the game to Monday.

On Friday afternoon, it was announced that the game time was pushed back from 1 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. Officials from Baltimore City recommended the time change to the team and the NFL because of safety reasons, the Ravens said. On Saturday, the NFL decided to switch the kickoff for the San Francisco 49ers-Philadelphia Eagles game from 1 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. because of the weather.

M&T Bank Stadium parking lots will open at 11 a.m. Sunday, and stadium gates will open at 2:45 p.m.

This is an important game for the Ravens to reach the postseason for the second straight season. The Ravens (7-6) are currently the sixth and final seed in the AFC playoffs with three regular-season games remaining.

Two other AFC teams (the Miami Dolphins and New York Jets) are also 7-6. The Dolphins play at the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, and the Jets play against the Atlanta Falcons.

The Ravens, who are looking to win back-to-back games for the first time since September, believe they are in a must-win situation.

"We have to hit a streak here," linebacker Jarret Johnson said. "If we don't hit a streak, we go home. We have no other choice but to get hot."

Well the Texans tried their best to lose, dropping TD passes, missing a FG, etc, but the Rams wanted the L more.  Kris Brown is done, I think.  Not even remotely reliable anymore (even worse than during that season that got them Mario Williams and a new HC and all that :tinfoil: ).

Matt Schaub is a really good QB, and I'm glad they have that guy to heave the ball to Andre Johnson.   They really need Owen Daniels though.  Dreesen is a good blocking TE, and can make the occasional catch, but Daniels is just excellent at everything, and it really seems to make a difference in the red zone (Dreesen dropped a TD pass that literally hit him in the hands/chest).   They've been trying to use another WR more to take some pressure off Johnson, but it's not the same thing.

But actually Timmay the tiebreakers rules are

Quoten the event that a playoff game ends in a tie, the deadlock will be broken using the following system:

   1. Most touchdowns scored by entire starting roster.
   2. Most fantasy points by starting quarterback(s).
   3. Most fantasy points by starting defensive team(s).
   4. Most fantasy points by starting defensive player(s).
   5. Most fantasy points by starting defensive back(s).
   6. Most fantasy points by starting defensive linemen.
   7. Most fantasy points by starting wide receiver(s).
   8. Most fantasy points by starting running back(s).
   9. Most fantasy points by starting tight end(s).
  10. Most fantasy points by starting kicker(s).

Though Fred Davis is avg 9pts a game (14 a game since he became starter) so be shocked if he gets shutout.

An interesting theory, posted just for Monkeybutt.

QuoteJay Cutler might be the secret spawn of former Colts quarterback Jeff George.

I'm not even sure this is a joke. Wikipedia tells me George is age 42 and Cutler is 26, so it actually makes sense if you're willing to gloss over some stuff like, oh, DNA testing. They're both from Indiana, and both strong-armed, knuckle-headed, franchise-killing quarterbacks. Bear with me for a second, because I'm going to throw out a theory that's totally made up and 100 percent untrue.

What if, at age 16, a young, cocky, mustachioed Jeff George got a young lady preggers behind an Indiana Tasty Freeze. (If John Cougar Mellancamp songs have taught us anything, it's that short-wearing-hotties in Indiana will hook up with you when you're 16 behind the Tasty Freeze shade tree as long as you can do a credible James Dean impression and you have enough money to buy the chili dogs.) Then, because a love-child would be a disaster for an up-and-coming golden boy athlete like George, Cutler was hidden from George -- sort of like in the Star Wars trilogy, except in this case Darth Vader's kid also has a bad temper and can't read coverages -- so he could go on living his life, never quite figuring out how to make his million dollar arm overcome his 10-cent brain during his NFL career. And then, years later, the son also rises.

That's the best way I can explain it. I'm calling for TMZ to start pushing this story immediately. In all seriousness, Cutler is either the worst good quarterback of his generation, or the best bad quarterback of his generation, just like George. The resemblance has become too much to ignore. At this point, all he needs is a mustache. Even Brian Billick was pointing it out during the broadcast. (The dumb reads, not the lack of mustache.) Cutler has a complete Howitzer for an arm. It's as strong as anyone's in the league. But he throws off his back foot constantly, he makes clueless reads in double and triple coverage, and he has horrendous body language and mechanics.

Everyone who destroyed Josh McDaniels for shopping Cutler the minute he arrived in Denver should probably pen the coach a handwritten apology. All year the Ravens have been getting picked apart by strong-armed quarterbacks, but this was just dreadful. I know Bears fans think the offensive line is partially to blame this year -- and in fairness, they've had a lot of injuries -- and that Cutler's receivers are horrible, but that is just delaying the inevitable reality. His quarterback rating (after going 10-of-27 for 94 yards and three INTs) was 7.9 against the Ravens. Seriously, I don't know exactly how that formula works, but I'm pretty certain they spot you six points just for having your name spelled correctly on the back of your jersey.

Cutler has always been a huge mistake. Getting to the semis with him is quite the achievement though.

Don't forget his gift for media relations.

Yeah, what  the fuck happened to that?  Yahoo taking my points away.

For instance, look at Boldin.  He lost a bunch of points somehow.

So he has 6 rec, 72 yds and a TD and thats 15 points.  But Morgan has 7 rec, 61 yds and a td and thats 18?  WTF.

Same with Johnson, he should have 9 points.

QuoteFormer NFL star Dave Pear is sorry he ever played football

Dave Pear has a message for you.

"Don't let your kids play football," he says. "Never."

It is an odd thing, hearing these sort of words from a man like David Louis Pear, University of Washington standout, Pro Bowl defensive lineman for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Super Bowl champion with the Oakland Raiders. His five-year NFL career was one thousands of high school and college athletes would envy -- charging out of a darkened stadium tunnel, 70,000 fans screaming for you, loving you, praising you, idolizing you.

"You wanna know the truth?" says Pear.

The question lingers -- the 56-year-old ex-athlete preparing to unload one more skull-splitting hit.

"I wish I never played football. I wish that more than anything. Every single day, I want to take back those years of my life ..."

The words are not subtle. They spit from Pear's mouth, with a blistering contempt normally reserved for drunk drivers. We are speaking via phone. I am in New York, sipping a hot chocolate, leaning back in a chair. My two young children are asleep. A Pretenders song, "2000 Miles," plays in the background. No worries, no complexities. Pear is sitting at his home in Seattle. His neck hurts. His hips hurt. His knees hurt. His feet hurt. When he wakes up in the morning, pain shoots through his body. When he goes to sleep at night, pain shoots through his body. What does Pear do to stay active?

"My life is simple," he says. "It's hard to get out of bed, but eventually I do. I try and do a little walking on the treadmill. I take naps. I go to physical therapy once per week. I read my Bible."

He is, in basic terms, a train wreck -- a football-inflicted train wreck. Pear walks with a cane and, often, simply doesn't walk at all. He suffers from vertigo and memory loss. Over the past 18 years, he has undergone eight surgeries, beginning with a Posterior Cervical Laminectomy on his neck in 1981, and including disc removal and rod fusion in his back (1987), arthroplasty in his left hip (2008) and, earlier this year, four screws removed from his lower back. Though he chalks up his physical ailments to snap after snap of punishment, he pinpoints the biggest problems back to 1979 and '80, his final two NFL seasons. While playing for Oakland, Pear suffered a herniated disc in his neck that never improved. Despite the unbearable agony, he says the Raiders urged him to keep playing.

Be a man! Be tough! "Those last two years in Oakland were very, very difficult times," he says. "I was in pain 24 hours per day, and my employers failed to acknowledge my injury. Sure, I won a Super Bowl ring. But was it worth giving up my health for a piece of jewelry? No way. Those diamonds have lost their luster."

Throughout North America, many of Pear's retired football brethren hear his words and scream, Amen! Conrad Dobler, the legendary Cardinals offensive lineman, is about to go through his 32nd knee surgery. Wally Chambers, the Chicago Bears' three-time Pro Bowl defensive end, spends much of his time in a wheelchair. Earl Campbell, the powder blue bowling ball, struggles to walk and underwent surgery to remove three large bone spurs. The list is both heartbreaking and never-ending -- one NFL player after another after another, debilitated either mentally, physically, or both. I'm currently working on a book that has led me to interview more than 150 former players. I'd say 60 percent experience blistering pain from a sport they last played two decades ago.

"And the NFL," Pear says, "doesn't care."

Hence, he is fighting back. Two years ago, Pear started a blog, davepear.com, with the intent of supporting hobbled NFL veterans and calling out the league's laughable disability policy. Pear says he first applied for disability benefits in 1983, and was denied. He applied again in 1995, under a new provision that stated players would be compensated should they properly prove their injuries were permanently debilitating. A league-appointed physician examined Pear and filed a report stating that a man who once bench pressed 500 pounds could no longer sit, stand or bend for prolonged time periods.

To Pear's shock and dismay, benefits were again denied.

Finally, in 2009, Pear's request was accepted, and he now receives a whopping $40,000 annually. "Am I financially stable?" he asks with a laugh. "Let's put it this way. By the time I was 27 I had two children and medical bills that would reach $500,000. I can't work, my wife, Heidi, has had to hold two and sometimes three different jobs at the same time. And why? Because the NFL hasn't allowed me and my family to receiver proper benefits."

Pear pauses. He worries that he sounds like a typical whiner -- some ex-jock who didn't appreciate making it big. "This isn't even about me," he says. "It really isn't. There are guys so much worse off than me, it's criminal. We dreamed our whole lives to play professional football, and our dreams came true. And then they turn into nightmares."

Pear is blunt, like a rusty dental knife. He considered Gene Upshaw, the former NFL Players Association executive director, to be a criminal. "He was Ken Lay," he says of the deceased Enron CEO. "Same thing -- took all the veterans he supposedly represented for a ride." He holds out hope that Upshaw's replacement, DeMaurice Smith, might make things right. "I'm keeping an open mind," he says. "I hope Mr. Smith looks at the retired players and sees the wreckage.

"We need help," he says.

A long, painful sigh.

"We need help."

What exactly was that meant to be?  Did they want to throw the ball to a runner with blockers in front of him down the sideline?  I assume that's what was intented, since no Redskin ran more than five yards past the line of scrimmage.
