MIAMI (Reuters) - A "relaxing, calm, beautiful place" may not be everyone's description of Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where the United States holds about 240 prisoners in a detention centre that has drawn condemnation from around the world.

But this was the opinion of reigning Miss Universe Dayana Mendoza of Venezuela, who visited the U.S. naval facility in eastern Cuba this month on a trip organized by the United Service Organizations (USO) which supports U.S. troops.

The Guantanamo Bay base, whose presence Cuba's government has contested as illegal for years, is used by U.S. authorities as a prison camp for foreign terrorism suspects. Critics have condemned it as a symbol of abuses in Washington's war on terrorism launched after the September 11, 2001, attacks.

Caracas-born Mendoza, 22, who visited the facility March 20-25 along with Miss USA Crystle Stewart, 27, enthused about her Guantanamo trip as an "incredible experience" in a blog entry posted on the Miss Universe website dated March 27, 2009.

"It was a loooot of fun!," Mendoza wrote, describing how she and Stewart met U.S. military personnel and took rides around the camp, which is encircled by a barbed-wire fenced, minefields and watchtowers. She said they also visited a bar on the base and the "unbelievable" beach there.

"We visited the Detainees camps and we saw the jails, where they shower, how the(y) recreate themselves with movies, classes of art, books. It was very interesting," she wrote.

"I didn't want to leave, it was such a relaxing place, so calm and beautiful," she added.

Former detainees and human rights groups have alleged the use of torture, including "waterboarding" (simulated drowning) and other physical abuses, at the Guantanamo prison. + More.

I'll be here all week. Try the veal. Be sure to tip your waitress.

She probably is simply clueless about how embarrasing this is for her.

It is pretty embarrasing for us as well.  The military should be ashamed hosting this circus.

Maybe if she was a famous actress or music star or something that might get their attention.

Presumably he means this particular military base, not the entire principle of transporting bimbos to the military, which has a long tradition.

Or not.

Well yes.  It might help if it was a base that soldiers would be more likely to be stationed at. :P

But Guatanamo has such a dark reputation doing this is just embarrasing.

Perhaps, but these days people associate Gitmo with torture etc. so this was a remarkably badly thought-through idea, in terms of public relations.

For example, Auschwitz, in addition to being a site of one of the Holocaust death camps, is also a rather nice medieval town with great architecture and probably a pleasant atmosphere. Still holding a beauty pageant there, and having the winner declare the she thinks "Auschwitz is the nicest, most friendly place on earth, where one can forget about world's evils" would not be received well, either. :P

Perhaps, but Gitmo constitutes quite a simple association this days so this was a remarkably badly thought-through idea, in terms of public relations.

Because that is what is what is being portrayed by the world media these days.  I do not have a problem at all with a USO show at Gitmo.  What bugs me is they invited this international celebrity and made it look like we put on some show for her as a propaganda stunt.  If they had just invited Miss America nobody would have cared.

But maybe I am making more of this than is probably warranted.  If people out there think we are running some sort of potemkin village on Miss Universe they probably are not going to think well of us anyway.

I always sorta wondered if maybe Fidel didn't have a bank account. ;)

The real reason of course for not cashing the checks is to protest the US 'occupation' of the Gitmo site.  But since Castro did in fact cash a single rent check (before he turned commie, I guess) the US asserts he has acknowledged the lease's validity and so on that basis refuses to vacate the base.

I wonder what would happen if the Castro regime fell, and was replaced with a new regime that was similarly opposed to the US presence at Gitmo?  Would we honor their wishes at that juncture?

Most of it is not really accessible terrain.  The base itself consists basically of two roads.  One ends with the Marine barracks and the other ends at the old airfield, now Club Gitmo.  The new airfield is across the bay and accessible by boat only.  They've got a small BX and the only McDonald's I've ever been to that serves Pizza.  And that's pretty much it.

Which is why the USO had a show for the soldiers, sailors, and marines there, featuring Miss Benezuela.

What else would she say? That the soldiers were savage murderers and the prisoners impaled on wooden spikes? She was a guest so of course she's going to say nice things about the people and the place. It may look like silly propaganda to outsiders but the servicemen stationed there I'm sure were appreciative of the USO. Should we sacrifice the well-being and morale of the servicemen because the ROTW thinks its stupid?

The servicemen there certainly don't give a crap about what the rest of the world thinks. They had a good time, and I'm glad for them.

Still holding a beauty pageant there, and having the winner declare the she thinks "Auschwitz is the nicest, most friendly place on earth, where one can forget about world's evils" would not be received well, either. :P
Have here declare?  You think Benezuela was given a script?

Better yet, turn Rhode Island into a horrible place where living is a torture.

Oh, wait...

While hardly worthy of statehood, there's nothing torturous about Rhode Island. It is better than Connecticut.

The servicemen there certainly don't give a crap about what the rest of the world thinks. They had a good time, and I'm glad for them.

That is really the point of the criticism. Its in bad taste for a beauty queen to visit a compound that is being closed because of various abuses to describe it in the way she did but apparently nobody in the military who was invovled with this saw the problem.

It is not being closed because of various abuses, so of course it is not in bad taste for her to visit it.

Just because you repeat the lie often enough does not turn it into the truth.

If she visited the prison and her comments were directed at the prison then they truly were in bad taste.  But I don't think she did.

I didnt say it was in bad tate for her to visit.  It is in bad taste for her to say that she found the whole place relaxing after having been shown where the detainees are kept.  The whole setup is an abuse of law which is why it is being closed.  Do we really have to go through the list of why that is again?

She visited the US troops at Guantanamo Bay to boost their morale.  She wasn't on a fact finding mission for the Amnesty International.  She said it was lovely and relaxing, which I assume it is.  It's a Caribbean beach after all.

I didn't think the comment was silly at all.  Would a reasonable, open-minded, objective person come to the conclusion that she finds the holding cages at Gitmo relaxing?  I believe not.  Is it possible that *some* people could leap to that conclusion?  Of course.

Your silly comment was that I was suggesting that all speech that might be misinterpreted should be banned.

You, the beauty queen and the military are also turning a blind eye to the history and closure of this place.  She could have said all kinds of stuff to boost morale of the troops.  "They were great" "What a great bunch of guys, they really treated me well" on and on and on.  But to say that she found the place relaxing after also describing here visit to where the detainees are held is a laughable misstep.

I suppose Obama is closing the detention centre because it is just too damn relaxing.

She did say that they (the soldiers) were a great bunch of guys and she had a fun and incredible time with them.
Now I can see the contention over her stating the place was relaxing and calm. She's obviously thinking about the tropical atmosphere and how well she was treated by the servicemembers there, but to say that at Gitmo, the world's most notorious prison camp, may raise some eyebrows.

But the USO and the military organized the show for the servicemembers, not for you or me or the rest of the world. Whatever she said after the trip and posted on her blog should reflect upon her judgements and misjudgements. To blame the military and the USO for your interpretation of her meaning is "silly".

I'm obviously a bit biased here, me being a serviceman who knows the value of these shows.

OK.  My first thought was criticizing a person on the grounds that they made a comment which can be misinterpreted is not that different from what I said.  My second thought was that the issue is perhaps too pedantic to continue on.  Finally my third thought was that you are not in favor of limiting *all* miscontruable comments but only those comments which can be misconstrued as support for an objectionable POV or condemnation for a laudable POV.  So silly comment withdrawn.

All (or almost all) of them did for a while.  The company dropped it after a few years;  I don't know if an exception was made to keep it on the menu at Gitmo, or if Hans just hasn't been there for some time and his comment is out-of-date.

Of course it is - I just find your little intellectually slippery use of the term "abuse" amusing. Much like everyone does with terms like "abuse" and "torture" when it comes to Gitmo, Mr. Moore.

No worries, your kind have actually won this little propaganda war. Now everyone blithely talks about "abuse" if not "torture" without batting an eye when it comes to Gitmo. Some pseudo-journalist actually won an award for uncovering all the "torture/abuse", no worries that they consistently failed to actually evidence any of this. I am sure what they meant was the tortured way the Bush admin twisted the law or something like that.

Sure.

Rather less than honest.

Abuse of the law - yeah, we all believe that is what you meant. Why, it is such a common term, and everyone knows that when you say "Her husband was abusive" you really mean he would sometimes speed on the way to work.
