Title: Who says the Brits don't have a sense of humor?
Post by: grumbler on March 21, 2016, 06:29:19 PM
The National Environment Research Council in Britain thought it would be a good idea to allow the public to name their new research ship, so set up a website to conduct the election.

The winner: RRS Boaty McBoatface

QuoteIn a blow for democracy, the British public has decided the best name for a £200 million ($380 million) ship is 'Boaty McBoatface'.
The Royal Research Ship, at the forefront of British naval engineering, deserved a great name.

Naively thinking the British public would take it seriously, The National Environment Research Council thought it would be a nice idea to ask people online to name the ship.

Everyone was keen to cast their vote. On Sunday morning, the organisation's website was so popular that it crashed.

One name was massively in front of the rest - Boaty McBoatface.

In second place, more than 13,000 votes behind, is the RRS Henry Worsley – named after the explorer who died while attempting to trek the Antarctic in January.

Must be all the immigrants voting...

Indeed.  Though British newspapers like the Telegraph report that there are people who think the British lack a sense of humor:

Headline: Arrogant, Unfriendly, and No Sense of Humour what foreign tourists think of the English

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/736311/Arrogant-unfriendly-and-no-sense-of-humour-what-foreign-tourists-think-of-the-English.html (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/736311/Arrogant-unfriendly-and-no-sense-of-humour-what-foreign-tourists-think-of-the-English.html)

Though, of course, this is just a British newspaper.  What do Brits know about the Brits compared to what Marti "knows" about the Brits?

Dunno why Marti is so set on adding to his reputation as a humorless moron. One would think that, eventually, he would just realize he can count on his body of work to carry his image.

On a purely factual level, yes, a British newspaper is reporting on a British agency who interviewed the actual tourists who don't get the British sense of humour because "Our sense of humour is very different. It's dry and quirky. That is one of the things that makes us such a unique destination – we have to get that message across."

The Telegraph at no point editorially concludes the British have no sense of humour.

I'm actually lost at how many levels of irony you're employing here.

Yes.  Irony was precisely what I was aiming at.  As for not understanding the British sense of humour, I found my understanding fine when I lived there and every time I have visited.  I'm certainly not the one who is saying the British have no sense of humour, except to say it to you as an ironic comment on your thin-skinned response to the issue.  However, I will say that you seem to have no sense of humor over this.  It really is a funny story, and isn't life-or-death at all.

QuoteOn a purely factual level, yes, a British newspaper is reporting on a British agency who interviewed the actual tourists who don't get the British sense of humour because "Our sense of humour is very different. It's dry and quirky. That is one of the things that makes us such a unique destination – we have to get that message across."

The Telegraph at no point editorially concludes the British have no sense of humour.

The Telegraph is reporting the results of a study.  This is a news story, not an editorial so, no, the Telegraph isn't reaching an editorial conclusion..  The study reported that foreigners gave Britain "low mean scores for being welcoming, having a good sense of humour or friendliness."

Marti asserted that no one was saying this and that I had simply made up the concept (despite the fact that the line that starts with "who says that..." is not meant to be taken literally, at least in Americanspeak).  I pointed out, rather tongue in cheek, that people had, indeed, said this.  I don't know why you are so sensitive to the charge, even when spoken in jest.   The irony is, of course, that you are exhibiting precisely the kind of behavior the study reported that foreigners noticed.  Yes, we're laughing at you, not with you.

Well theoretically they depend on their welfare check or whatever. But most people who get the vote care who wins. But it is this effect that gets true loony-tunes elected to minor offices all over the US. Most people have no stake so they do not care.

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/03/13/world/europe/boaty-mcboatface-mission-antarctica.html

QuoteBoaty McBoatface, From Internet Joke to Polar Explorer

LONDON — Boaty McBoatface is back, but this time it's serious.

The high-tech remote-operated yellow submarine, bearing a name that began as a joke, will begin its first mission this week through a deep current that starts in Antarctica and goes through the Southern Ocean.

Boaty will navigate through underwater waterfalls and rapids on a two-month mission, collecting data to help scientists understand how global warming affects oceans. It will depart on Friday aboard the James Clark Ross, a British polar research ship, from Punta Arenas, Chile, and will head to the Southern Ocean.

The scientists involved can only hope that Boaty McBoatface will find something that draws as much attention to climate change as the odd story of how the vessel got its name.

That story started a year ago, when the Natural Environment Research Council, a British government agency, opened a public campaign to name a ship to replace the James Clark Ross.

That plan backfired in spectacular fashion, with voters overwhelmingly supporting a name that failed to capture the grandeur that officials were probably looking for: Boaty McBoatface.

To the dismay of many, the Science Ministry ignored the results of the poll and announced that the ship would be named after the naturalist David Attenborough.

In an attempt to soothe hurt feelings, British officials acknowledged the Boaty McBoatface phenomenon by bestowing the name on a remotely operated submarine that would accompany the David Attenborough in collecting data and samples.

Enthusiasm for Boaty McBoatface continued to run high on Monday, even though, as one Twitter user noted, it's not a boat, and it doesn't have a face.

The robot submarine's missions can last for several months and include traveling thousands of miles under ice while reaching depths of about three and a half miles to measure seabed properties on an oceanic scale. It can then rise to the surface to transmit data to oceanographers via a radio link.

The British National Oceanography Center says it hopes Boaty will be able to make the first under-ice crossing of the Arctic Ocean.

Construction on the David Attenborough, a project expected to cost 200 million pounds, or about $240 million, continues at a shipyard in Liverpool, in northern England. The vessel is expected to become operational in 2019.
