For me it would be a toss-up between James Stewart

Perhaps it's an artefact of internet search bias, I guess people/websites tend to link to more sexual content, so an actress who's appeared nude or worn a lot of cleavage emphasising costumes ends up with those dominating all other image search results.
edit:
I should add most of my favourite classic movie actresses are, thank goodness, still alive; Dianna Rigg, Julie Christie, Claudia Cardinale, Raquel Welch.

She isn't really known outside the Chinese world, but she was arguably the most popular Hong Kong TV actress in the early 80s. Back then, there was no real TV drama production in mainland China. Only Hong Kong or Taiwan, so she didn't have much competition. She possessed both beauty and acting skills, and was particularly well-known for her roles in period Chinese dramas. In a development that shocked the Chinese world, she killed herself in her mid-20s, at the peak of her career, likely due to her troubles with her boyfriend.
Gail Russell...mostly from her part from the John Wayne flick, Angel and the Badman...too damned cute. Alas, drank herself to death at a young age.

As my German teacher used to say when she covered Greek mythology: "They sieged Troy for 10 years - why they stayed so long I will never understand. By that point Helen must have been quite used up and wasted. Life was rough in those days."

Well, I mean, Murphy was great, but when she was alive, she was the same age as me. So it's not really in line with the black and white pictures answers if you know what I mean.
I didn't want to be number three or four to say Audrey Hepburn.

I don't care for the flat chested look favored by Hollywood for actresses in the 1920s; but I assumed everyone thought I was going to pick a silent era starlet, so I played along.
