Title: Wildlife
Post by: mongers on September 20, 2015, 03:26:56 PM
Have we ever had a thread about wildlife and/or nature?

Couldn't find anything so thought I'd start one. As I've gotten older I seem to appreciate wildlife more.

Saw a nuthatch in the garden earlier, first time I've seen one. Weird looking stubby bird like a small woodpecker with a bright orange underside and swagbag eye patches.

My favorite bird that I observe fairly often is the raven. Eagles are awesome but there is just something about ravens I like. :)

Throughout the summer we have been observing a pair of swans on the river outside our house. They have succeeded in raising no fewer than 8 cygnets

I never saw the word "cygnet" before. This is something I love about English - that Latin words prop up like this.

We've lost most of our swans, they're either up river close to the tourists in Salisbury or at the tourist spot at the river mouth down at the coast.

I think we've only about 5 currently on the river, not seen any cygnets this year, I think because it's getting to popular around here with dog walkers, who seem to walk and talk on their mobiles half the time, ignoring what the dogs are doing.  <_<

Nice photos 11B4V.

The UK in comparison is almost entirely un-wild, virtually all landscapes are the result of human activities.

Though I guess the much of our shoreline and some small ancient forests in Scotland are natural.

I'll put bird seed out on the deck railing in the morning daily for a few months now. It can get quite busy and humerous with 10-20 creatures right in front of the front window. That usually draws Squirrels, Chip Monks, Finches, Stellar Jay's, and Doves. A couple days I forgot and the chip monks were crawling on the window screens reminding me of my error.

Nuthatches have such a distinct call.  Love hearing them and have plenty around my house.  Also have some very large hares in the neighbourhood, they're starting to go white now in preparation for the Winter.

Charge #1: Chewing on my maple trees.

Sumbitch quit chewing on my maple trees. I just sighted in four rifles today at the range. Not the time of the year to violate the Treaty. I'll blast your ass.

Talking of which, I'm rather pleased there's now a family of hedgehogs living in the garden, especially given how rare they are nowadays.  :bowler:

Interesting item about leprosy in red squirrels. In addition to most carrying it, an isolated island population in a harbour near here still carry a strain close to that found in medieval times. :gasp:

Quote
Red squirrels! Adorable, right? Wrong – they're riddled with leprosy
Fluffy tree-dwellers carry ancient disease, say boffins

By Alexander J Martin, 11 Nov 2016

Blighty's dwindling population of red squirrels is riddled with leprosy, according to new research.

Not full-on leprosy, but leprosy-lite, according to a paper with the Ronseal title of Leprosy in Red Squirrels, published in Science, alongside a report titled Red squirrels in the British Isles are infected with leprosy bacilli.

While studying populations of the endangered critters, which are facing habitat destruction and competition from their grey North American cousins, boffins found that some in Scotland had begun to spout strange growths from their extremities.

This was discovered to be Mycobacterium lepromatosis, a newly discovered form of leprosy which can infect humans but is not the classical cause of the disease.

After reporting the wart-like growths, the researchers received alerts from the public about other strange squirrel sightings across the UK, and the University of Edinburgh's Professor Anna Meredith checked out reports from the isolated Brownsea Island in Dorset, where red squirrels were discovered to be infected with the classical form of the disease.

With so much leprosy going around, the researchers conducted a full-on study using genomics, histopathology, and serology, and found that the newer leprosy was infecting squirrels from England, Ireland, and Scotland, and the classic leprosy bacteria in squirrels from Brownsea Island.
