Title: Danish Election
Post by: Liep on May 31, 2015, 05:30:29 AM
Election 2015 is upon us and of course Languish should get the opportunity to blindly pick a Danish politician based only on appearance.

So far the election has been about which of the PM candidates would destroy Denmark the least. Also about something as sexy as unemployment benefits and about how much that should be. Immigration has had surprisingly little air time but there's still 18 days left.

So you overwhelmingly picked the socialist from the Unity List. 2nd place went to the UKIP of Denmark, although these are slightly less angry at Jews.

I think I'm gonna vote for the vampire.

  • The Unity List (Socialist)
  • Socialist People's Party
  • Social Democrats
  • The Alternative (Green Party-ish)
  • Social Liberals
  • Christian Democratic Party (won't get any seats)
  • Liberals (right wing social democrats)
  • Conservatives
  • Liberal Alliance (actual liberals)
  • Danish People's Party (right wing nutters)

Turns out it all might be for naught as the election will be decided by the trans-atlantic votes. Faroe Islands and Greenland will likely determine who wins with their two seats each. Greenland usually goes for two lefties but Faroe Islands is either 2 left; 1 left, 1 right; or 1 left 1 independent and then all hell will break loose.

So Russia is apparently very interested in one of our "PM" candidates, John Erik Wagner because he's posing naked on his election poster. In real life he's just a fringe politician without chance of being elected that thrives on whatever little media attention he gets every 4 years.

It's probably NSFW for the Americans, so: http://www.bt.dk/sites/default/files-dk/node-images/71/9/9071625-fgafdgagagagagagagagag.jpg

I was in Denmark (first time in 18 months) when the election was announced. The immediate explosion of election posters everywhere is really quite spectacular and pretty stupid.

Predictions:

The current government will, against all odds, stay in power. As the Conservatives desperately try to kill themselves off and Lars Løkke fumbles, Helle Thorning is doing better every day. Alternativet making a good showing is pivotal to this, but that looks very likely. I do predict them disintegrating by next election, though, as they hit the brick wall of day to day politics and compromise.

There's nothing like a Danish election thread to get the old-timers out of hiding. Nice to see you both still alive and kicking. :)

Since Danish is pretty much unintelligible even to you Danes yourselves I tried to get some news of the election in a languange that I somewhat master but it's prooving difficult. Swedish media has nothing on the matter. All we'll get is a 3 sec news flash on the public service news, right after the 15 min segment on train delays.

If the Social Democrats pull this off it'll be the biggest comeback in history as the right wing has lead the polls from almost day 1 of last election:

Speaking of valgdag. The right pulled the immigration card as it has been dubbed here and is now winning. Basically it's calling all muslims dirty criminals and something about Denmark being swarmed by a horde of them and or Africans, whichever the voter finds more scary. The left pulled a frantic, slightly milder, immigration card too but only managed to soil themselves.

Is there still talk of closing the borders again?

In Germany, Saxony and Bavaria are pushing for doing so, because controls around the G7 summit brought in 100+ wanted criminals (though by that logic you would want police check points everywhere and not just on borders).

Close to valgdag. The effect of the 'immigration card' is dwindling and the right is in full panic mode promising border closings, fewer immigrants, less spend on foreign aid, more spend on elders, less spend on unemployment benefits, more spend on elders.

It looks like the Faroe Islands will be crucial in this election though, the right will get one seat from there, but the left might just lose its seat which will then go to the Republicans. If that happens and the Republicans hold the deciding seat it'll be a bidding war over who can give most to the Faroese. Predicted buzz phrase: "fishing quota".

The press battling for a photograph of the PM coming out of the voting booth is too funny. There was a frail old woman coming out just ahead and I've never seen anyone looking that confused. Poor thing. :(

Most media time for the Faroe Islands that I've ever seen. Fortunately it's a very picturesque place and most of the interviews from up there involves the camera panning away to a fishing boat, a coastline or a mountain.

Does it make the islanders feel truly part of the Danish nation now that they might decide the composition of the government?

Only in Denmark. In the rest of Europe, they get media time when their football team beats Austria or Greece (twice).

Well, it turned out that the north atlantic votes didn't count for shit as the xenophobic rightwing party won a landslide victory.

Opinion polls vs. election results for the Danish People's Party:

90 right, 89 left.

So it was rather close still, but the UKIP of Denmark will be the deciding factor in a new government.

http://www.nytimes.com/2015/06/19/world/anti-immigrant-party-gains-in-denmark-elections.html

QuoteIn an election that turned on economic uncertainty and fierce debates over immigration, Danish voters on Thursday ousted their center-left government in a clear swing to the right that unexpectedly elevated an anti-immigrant, anti-European Union party that had been on the margins of the country's politics.

New York Times gets it wrong. Danish People's Party effectively controlled immigration and welfare politics throughout the 00's so I wouldn't exactly say they had been on the margins.

QuotePeter Skaarup, a senior lawmaker with the party told The Local, a Danish news outlet. "I know we often fare better in these elections than the polls suggest since people often aren't willing to admit that they vote for the Danish People's Party, but it really does look fantastic so far."

If you're not willing to admit that to pollsters anonymously then it's probably not fantastic.

Quote"Immigration has been a very key and decisive issue in this campaign," Mr. Hansen said. Debate focused largely on the number of workers coming from places like Bulgaria and Romania, what sort of benefits they should receive, and whether Denmark should take in more of the migrants arriving at Europe's southern borders, he added.

Immigration has been key and decisive since 2001. :weep:

At least we got to see a minister who had clearly already drunk away his sorrow. Understandable, but also embarrassing when he tried to manage his way through an interview.

probably because many people don't want to be pilloried (sp?) for voting on their party of choice, given the dominance of PC-thought in media

She had a very good election and easily secured her seat. Her party also had an overall increase in votes and seats.

EDIT: And she started wearing glasses. Does not take away any cute factor.

So the real losers of this election are the pollsters and political commentators (as judged by journalists who aren't, but want to be, political commentators).

Oh and the official investigation into the Danish involvement in the Iraq war is being cancelled. The newly elected PM was to be interrogated in a few months, I guess he wanted to skip that.
