Title: PETA protests Obama killing a fly

What planet do these guy's live on?

Quote
WASHINGTON – The group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals wants the flyswatter in chief to try taking a more humane attitude the next time he's bedeviled by a fly in the White House.

PETA is sending President Barack Obama a Katcha Bug Humane Bug Catcher, a device that allows users to trap a house fly and then release it outside.

"We support compassion even for the most curious, smallest and least sympathetic animals," PETA spokesman Bruce Friedrich said Wednesday. "We believe that people, where they can be compassionate, should be, for all animals."

During an interview for CNBC at the White House on Tuesday, a fly intruded on Obama's conversation with correspondent John Harwood.

"Get out of here," the president told the pesky insect. When it didn't, he waited for the fly to settle, put his hand up and then smacked it dead.

"Now, where were we?" Obama asked Harwood. Then he added: "That was pretty impressive, wasn't it? I got the sucker."

Friedrich said that PETA was pleased with Obama's voting record in the Senate on behalf of animal rights and noted that he has been outspoken against animal abuses.

Still, "swatting a fly on TV indicates he's not perfect," Friedrich said, "and we're happy to say that we wish he hadn't."

Deputy press secretary Josh Earnest said the White House has no comment on the matter.

PETA? Nobody listens to those asshats. Extremists are always assholes. End of story. No senses of humour= :bleeding:

Swatting that fly (which may not have been dead... PETA.) was the single greatest thing that Obama has done since taking office. Almost as cool as Bush's near death dorito experience.

FlyGATE.... oh the horror.

Hmm, maybe Pres Obama can send PETA's leaders to Gitmo.  Seems to be some space available there now.   ;)

Flies aren't curious.  They're not wired for emotion, and their brains run on less power than some people's wristwatches.

At any rate, this is just attention-whoring by PETA, not an actual political statement.

It's a great way to marginalize themselves. You could probably get a sizable percentage, possibly even a majority, to agree that the "ethical treatment of animals" is desirable. But their wacky comments and extremism just makes them irrelevant.

I don't know why you're taking this non-story seriously.

Some journalist probably asked PETA to respond to Obama's swatting of the fly. They say some fairly harmless things, get free publicity and the journalist gets an article to write.

Aftonbladet reported how he "cold heartedly" swatted the fly.

Sometimes I suspect I live in the Matrix. And not just a general Matrix that we all are connected to, but rather, my own personal tool of torment.

I'm actually beginning to think that I already died and this is what purgatory is like.

I think Hell would probably be a bit worse, but I could totally see purgatory being this way.

The honeymoon is definitely over, yes.

They were raving about him like he was the second coming a month ago.

Now we're back in ameriKKKan territory.

This is why no sane person would ever want to be POTUS.  I mean killing a fly is a big deal now?

Hmmm... if that actually attracts/lures a fly into the trap, so I can get rid of it from indoors easier, I might even use one. It's a damn hassle trying to kill/remove a fly that's gotten into the house!

Did he wash his hand after the deed?  Flies are not particularly sanitary, especially when squashed.

Ironically, PETA is against the "no kill movement" and regularly euthanizes most animals that are surrendered to them.

QuoteAccording to the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, PETA euthanized 1,946 companion animals (out of 2,138 animals surrendered to them or picked up as strays) in its home state of Virginia in 2005.[87] During that same year, 126,797 animals (out of 228,376 animals surrendered or picked up as strays) were euthanized at animal shelters in Virginia.[88] San Francisco Chronicle columnist Debra J. Saunders reported that, according to PETA "In 2003, PETA euthanized over 85 percent of the animals it took in, finding adoptive homes for just 14 percent."

Well maybe, but there are real-life lunatics who support PETA, go to their rallies, and give them money.  I used to work with a crazy cat lady who was a PETA member and supporter.

They don't like the pet industry and certain ways of keeping pets, but they just call them 'companion animals' and that makes it okay.

Remember, most of PETAs membership are people who really love their pets just a little too much, not lunatics and furries (although the lunatics run the place).  If they came out hardline against pet ownership, their membership and donors would go to more moderate groups.

A PETA representative was on tv, and said basically this, and that things were blown out of proportion. Said they were asked about it by the media and made a statement. No protests or such on PETA's part.

But then, I guess they've made their reputation so people are more likely to pounce on them, rightly or wrongly.
