Title: Watches
Post by: mongers on March 10, 2015, 02:36:16 PM
I thought we had a thread about watches, couldn't find it so given yesterday's apple watchthingy announcement, now would be a good time to start a new one.

Given the above news and the expected hugmungus sales, I'm predicting the 'fashionable' tech/nerd consumer will be persuaded that they need a watch, rather than just looking at their smartphone/cellphone, something many of the will have been doing for all their adult lives.

So do you still use one, what do you look for in a watch?

I think I may have found the most hideous watch on ebay:

There was a time in the not so distant past that a watch was a significant fashion statement.  Swatches were all the rage and Rolex was a prestige statement.  Maybe apple will be able to generate that kind of hype again.  But I am not so sure.

OK I need a watch that is always illuminated at night, so I can see the time, ideally digital, without having to use my other hand.

The watch must also have a cloth or fabric strap, be genuinely water proof and ideally have a stopwatch and alarm in addition to date display option.

Does anyone know if such a watch exists, because I can't find a digital one that matches that spec.  <_<

My parents bought me a fancy watch for christmas.
I can't bring myself to wear it often. When I was a kid I used to wear a watch all the time. Now though...hard to see the point.
Even when I do wear it I usually just look at my phone

I don't like the idea of a watch I would have to wind or plug in every day or so.  I've been wearing the same Swiss Army watch for about 15 years now.

I'd totally buy the $350 version, but I wouldn't want the cheap plastic strap around me wrist.

The ones I just scrolled through on the Apple site for the watch. The last one, the $1000 version, looks like a steel version of the thing you'd get on an 80's calculator watch.  Perhaps that's what they were going for, but some different options would be nice (the "Milanese" mesh type is there too, but there don't seem to be any normal oyster, or whatever, types).

I do enjoy wearing a watch from time to time.  They were very handy in tests at UT where cell phones were verboten and they grew on me.  Not literally.

I really like the idea of a cell phone wristwatch combo.  Clear out space from my pants pockets.

Sorting through watches yesterday, I found some cheap plastic Lorus watch, that I'd not used in 2/3 years since it got trashed in an accident, and you when I check it's time, it was only 1 minute 19 seconds out.

I think it's because whilst they're a cheap, it's a Seiko brand and so have their 'movement' in them.

I've another Lorus and that keeps good time too, so I don't think it's a fluke, so much better than Casio's +/- 30 seconds for a lot of their range.

We got this watch from the company some years ago, it's radio controlled but that isn't really working very well and the minute arm is a little loose, so I don't really wear it.

....

The most accurate watch I have is a Полет кварц that looks sort of like this:
...

Sorting through watches yesterday, I found some cheap plastic Lorus watch, that I'd not used in 2/3 years since it got trashed in an accident, and you when I check it's time, it was only 1 minute 19 seconds out.

It's better than my radio controlled one, it's 2 minutes 3 seconds off. Granted, it has been in a drawer for 6 months so it'll be accurate tonight at 04:00 if it can find a signal.

I own several watches, some of them very cheap and some of them rather expensive, and use them every day, changing them according to mood, attire and milieu :frog:

I think the wife will get an Apple Watch for sure, though I think she'll buy a stainless steel one.  She is a big Apple fan.
