Just to be clear - this is not asking for a full blown remake, just a pure graphic and sound "facelift".
I will start with two:
- Defender of the Crown
- Darklands
Both would make great iPad games.
Battlezone. (The Activision one from 1998)
Quote from: Martinus on February 02, 2015, 06:51:07 AM

Saw that, it's not remastered. The graphics is still as bad it was in the original game.
'Languish-Paradox: The Forum Wars'
I'll second Darklands
And add Planescape: Torment
Seven Cities of Gold
Starflight
most of the early Sierra games (Police Quest series, Space Quest series)

Star control 1 and 2
I kinda miss Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe. That was fun, and one of the first games that supplemented the original release with additional disks of planes.

Oh, good choice, odd indeed that it's not been brought back.
Fighting Steel
Arcanum: but from a Skyrim perspective.
HL/HL2
The game I most would have wanted to see redone... has been redone. Sit Meier's Pirates!
I played the shit out of that game as a kid, and adored that it was redone in 2002 or so.
Actually, it's been long enough it could do with another remastering... :shifty:
SimEarth

Seconded.
About Planescape: Torment, there is a nice mod to crank the resolution up to 1920*1080, it gives a good facelift to the game.
Other games: Day of the Tentacle, The Dig, Star Wars: Rebellion, and oh, Freespace 1 and 2.

All good choices. Arcanum would probably be my #1 pick.
I wonder how the original Populous would look now with today's machines.
Apparently Homeworld and Homeworld 2 are being remastered and due for release around 25 Feb.

"You beta fix this pile of shit."
Alpha Centauri
Kingmaker, No Greater Glory, Ascendancy, Conquest of the New World, Warcraft Orcs and Humans, Warcraft II. I miss the first games I played when my family finally got a computer. Only Colonization has been updated, though I haven't played the update as I've read less than stellar reviews. :(
Red Baron.
New Colonization was bad. I loved the original but wow. I forget exactly why because it did not take long to realize it was terrible.

In a blaze of glory. :contract:
I agree with Garbon's SimEarth suggestion.
I would also like to see Masters of Magic remastered.
Sword of the Samurai. So much potential with today's computer technology.
That (not remastered) is on steam.
Morrowind.
Although modders have re-released it in the Oblivion engine.
Also: the Morrowind Overhaul that increases the original game's graphical fidelity considerably. With it the game looks like it looks in my nostalgia addled memory ( seriously, it's a huge improvement).

I will join the SimEarth chorus, and definitely Seven Cities of Gold, as well.
Some games I think are just better as they were. I'd like to think the early Ultima games would cool to be remastered...but I dunno if you could really get the same feel of the original without screwing it all up.
Not sure if the PQ/SQ would work either. I loved PQ, but I think Cal just remembers this... :P

And don't forget Hero's Quest.
Also, Ancient Art of War and Ancient Art of War at Sea.
Parts of the entire SSI back catalog.

Sword of Aragon.
More idea:
Autoduel.
Roadwar 2000/Europa
I guess you could say Medieval Lords was remade in Crusader Kings. I second the SSI call. Especially the Gold Box AD&D stuff.
The Cosmic Balance.

It does look a lot better, I agree, but Morrowind's gameplay is clunky compared to later RPGs. What stands out, is the weird and lovely world of Morrowind.

[molyneux]It's amazing! So much more immersive than the original! Better art! Better sounds! Your friends can play as the villagers, defy you, and you can smite them for their betrayals! We'll be releasing content packs per asset on Steam Early Access to take the pressure off the development team! Preorder it now so we can make this![/molyneux]

They would have to be totally different games to work now. I mean the whole plot was flipped when we learned in Ultima VI Mondain et al were heroes to the Gargoyles....or something like that. My memory is hazy. It was over 20 years ago, after all.
Wasn't there some kind of remake of Ultima IV being done?
QuoteStar control 1 and 2
Star Control 2 would still work great today. That should absolutely be remade.
Quoteyou should play Col 2 with the Revolutions and Religions mod: whole new game.
I am unlikely to ever fire it up again (it was not even mine, it was on my father's computer he is much more of a Civ freak than me) but if I do I hope I remember this thread.
The Wing Commander games.
Jagged Alliance II
Tie Fighter
Theme Park/Theme Hospital
Transport Tycoon
Ascendancy

Early entries in the Uncharted Waters series (the "only popular in the Far East" MMORPG does not count).

First, it isn't Far-East only anymore.
Second, they are at the fifth iteration and it seems Tecmo-Koei has dumbed it down somewhat. :(
Now I'd fucking FAP in my pants if they made Nobunaga's Ambition Online fully available to Western audiences.

Point taken, a bit more promotion would not hurt in the crowded MMORPG world. Not a great fan of MMORPG as well.
As for the series, I was thinking more of the first two, the only ones which got a western release.
Dungeon Keeper. I had lots of fun playing that, would love to see a decent remake for PC.

I thought the graphics on Ascendancy were quite good, but the gameplay (despite many neat ideas) was lacking. I don't think a remastering would make me want to play it again, it would take a bigger overhaul.
It was mostly the brain-dead AI, lack of queues and a couple other things. Easily solvable within a remastered edition.
Ascendancy would be my answer to the OP as well.

By the original post, remastering is considered:

If there's more that is allowed to be done then I agree.
Second TIE Fighter.
Also, in a similar genre, it's about time for a new general aviation flight simulator. FSX is too old now, though the recent Steam re-release has been tweaked somewhat for optimal performance on modern hardware. X-Plane is just too inaccessible for the casual user.

i agree with both of you, and think it would take more than a facelift - but so would a good remake of
Arcanum, where the grinding and inventory management were not up to snuff.
When I think of "remastering" I think that the essence (story, feel.. "ambiance," if you will) remains the same, but everything else gets modernized, including AI. You clearly mean it in a more limited sense, but that's okay. The OP really agrees with you, but I'd not want a Fallout, for example, with just better graphics and sound. I'd want a "remastering" to be on the scale of
X-COM.
Yep. I don't think it makes sense to remaster just graphics and sound. Things like physics, AI or UI that were also constrained by hardware or lack of code base have improved over time and should be part of any updated gem.
Of course it makes any remake harder, because you're taking decisions instead of just upgrading the quality of assets. A task for which you already have things like concept art or raw sound files. But it also makes it really worth it.
