Title: Favourite Childhood Toys
Post by: Josephus on November 23, 2014, 04:36:25 PM
Split from TV thread.

So what were yours? I'm a child of the 70s mostly. Grew up on a healthy dose of Fisher Price stuff....the television that played Row Row Row Your Boat and the record player that hid five different coloured discs.
As I got older Action Men (G.I. Joes) were huge with my peers.
I was always a board game fan. For Xmas we used to play Monopoly a lot and a game called Wide World, where you flew a plane across the world. I'm sure there were others.
As I mentioned earlier we used to spend a lot of time with Meccano sets.
I had a Spirograph set.

And this (only Brits and other Euros would get this). We spent a lot of time playing Subbuteo.

Lego.

Other things came and went, but always Lego.

For this "big kid" even today; bought a set this year. One aimed at the "16+" market, but still...:showoff:

Good thread idea.

I had quite a bit of meccano, some of it inherited, but never did a great deal with it.

The toy set that got most used was some ancient set of stone building bricks, which came with small rubber flat sheets that could be used for the floors in buildings. I think this set might even have been pre-war, well they seemed ancient to us kids.

I had a lot of rather nice dinky die-casts, that I didn't look after well.

Oh, I distinctly remember the orange bouncy ball things when they become popular first time round, had lots of races up and down the garden with those.  :)

Toys you brought too school with you ?

I remember playing  poker dice a lot in junior school.

Top Trumps cards were a stable for some time at senior school.  :)

Played a hell of a lot of Risk every summer at the cottage.*

Name brand little kid toys I didn't experience so much, growing up as i did in a war ravaged 3rd world country with import restrictions.

*In Canada it's called a camp.

Oh my God! Yes forgot about Top Trumps cards. Sometime around 77-78 those things were huge. We were all playing them. I think I had a Battleship set (Ark Royal/ Enterprise) ruled.

We played battleship, tanks and aircraft mainly, no surprise there for young teenage boys.

Playmobil was probably the biggest for me, with Lego coming second. We got a lot of mileage out Airfix soldiers and Top Trump cards as well. Toy guns were used a fair bit too, and there definitely were big Action Man and Star Wars phase as well. Though markers and paper for drawing, and various balls used for soccer probably saw the most use if I look at my entire childhood.

Anyone ever caught up in those fad games you used to get and that are now regularly professionally hyped to children ?

I remember a toy called Clackers, which consisted two large hard plastic balls on strings that children would bash up and down from their hands. This resulted in a number of stories in the papers about fractured wrists, so they were banned/withdrawn.

The funny thing was they were the same size as testicles, but at the time I don't recall anyone commenting on this, innocent times indeed.

None of you were Subbuteo players?

I wanted some, put for some reason never got given them.  :(

I suspect because parents thought they were an insubstantial present, just a green mat with some small plastic figures, ignoring the real play value and skills involved/developed.

My great-grandfather had started a moving company.  My great uncle managed the company and he had gotten all his grandsons and great nephews a remote controlled moving van for the seventy fifth anniversary of the company, complete with the company logo on it.  I've still got mine.   :)

I had some model rockets; those were a lot of fun.  I had a trick kite that was a pain to get airborne but once up in the air it would do all these spins and loops.

My favorites were Legos; that's pretty common among engineers.

Voltron (the cat versions not the shitty Gobot type car garbage or whatever those were), Transformers, GI Joes (the small ones), and Lego were my favorites as a kid.  Oh and Micro Machines.

I had tons of Transformers, as well as He-Man, Star Wars figures (I had the Millennium Falcon, which was super cool).  I also had two Voltron lions, which was lame if you didn't have all five, but I still thought they were cool.

Lego, by far. Before they had all those ready made parts.

And the old Kenner Star Wars figures.

A friend had rich parents, so he had all Masters of the Universe Figures, and later all Transformers, and Mask. We spent quite some time playing with his Masters otU figures.

I should add, that I inherited a lot of Legos from my sisters. As I mentioned, Legos were a cheap toy when I was a kid. From Star Wars I got what was on sale, and any vehicle was practically out of range. I built space ships out of shoe boxes for them.

Another friend, a bigger Star Wars geek than I, finished the old Kenner collection in the early 90s, before the hype was renewed, and then sold it off for a high 4 digit amount. He's now collecting not for completion, but rather for figures he likes, though he will snatch up any high value item if he sees it for cheap somewhere. He recently became a Dad, and his son is called Luke - he made a point of saying that the name was his girlfriend's suggestion, not his.

I played with Playmobils + Gi joe & legos. Use my sister's barbies as victims of kidnapping.

My brother & I played the hell out of that.

My first memorable toy that was mine only was Stretch Armstrong.  Took that thing with me everywhere.  Then my brothers finally did what all older brothers did to poor Stretch-- they each took one arm and stretched him across the hallway and broke him in two :(

Star Wars figures and vehicles were a big deal for my brother and me.  We also had this "robot" called 2XL that did trivia games and ran off of 8-track tapes of all things.

This was also rather kick-ass:

Playmobil, tons of it. Mainly Old West and Pirates. I went to the point of burying the pirates' treasure (full of splendidly shining plastic coins) in a plant pot for a later treasure hunt, but this happened a couple days before we moved, and when in the new house I was never able to find the booty again. Probably it's still rotting in a croton vase at my mom's, and I'm still regretting my idea.

Matchbox and Hot Wheels cars, slight preference for the Matchbox series.

Micronauts, the White, black, green and red sets of knight and Mount.

Small plastic animals, a crude version of the Schleich ones, from the brontosaurus to the hen. Used mainly as obstacles for the Matchbox races.

When I was 10, the Atari 2600 VCS cancelled everything else I was playing with at the time.

I had a mechano set and a monopoly game that took up most of my play time when I was young.  When I got a bit older and earned money doing odd jobs and mowing grass I bought marbles.  I spent a lot of time in the grade school playground playing with(and winning a lot more marbles.  By the time I finished grade 7 I was able to sell the whole collection and buy my first dirt bike.

Why does she think he'll be an engineer?

One thing that I did, (and still do,) is eat dishes one at a time.  That is if a meal is turkey, mashed potatoes, green beans and salad; I will eat the turkey, then the mashed potatoes, then the green beans and then the salad.  Nearly all the engineers my parents knew did the same thing, and I did well in math and science; so my parents encouraged me to consider engineering when I was in high school.

That's exactly what I did as a kid.  I eventually got tired of people asking me why I do that (plus mom remarking about how cute it was) that I made it a point to stop.  But I'll still do it every now & then.

Yeah that's a line I use to0, though true in my case, possible in both senses :D; I had a lovely collection of marbles from a place called house of marbles, when they had just started, then one day I couldn't find them, no idea were those marbles went.

Sweet.  When my grandfather died, I got a box of his tuxedo bow ties and matching cumberbunds, some dating to the late '60s.  One day, I will do a Vegas gig with Steve and Eydie.  Or host the MDA Marathon.  In 1974.

I know - I often think the same. I do not want to cheer at every post but I feel like expressing my approval. :P

Some of my all-time, non-Guns of Navarone faves--

I had those 2.

I had a regular Big Wheel instead of the Green Machine, I wasn't happy about it.

Here's something the old fogies will remember--

The original GI Joe.

Didn't play with him for years;  when I was around 4 or 5 I went through an irrational "fear of beards" phase.

I would love to score another one in decent condition.  I loved that goddamned spaceship.  Used to have to carry it around the house with both hands.

The "stringing up your doppelganger" motif is rather chilling.

I think we had most of these...

(https://languish.org/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.toyarchive.com%2FDungeons%26amp%3BDragons%2FFigures%2FFigureLineUpBackOfCard1a.jpg&hash=c24e85e5747d12922ccc43d642ad01c94dc44151)

And lots of those toy monster trucks that you'd wind-up/roll-back (Rough Riders, I think was one of the brands...there were two big competing brands)

And I am sure we had this somewhere.

If it was 80's sci-fi or fantasy, we probably had toys/action figures of it.

Also had buttloads of the D&D lead figurines we'd play with.  Probably explains all the problems in adolescence and will end up cutting a decade off my lifespan.

I don't remember any of the figures, but that Fort hit a nostalgia bone I didn't know I had so me or a good friend must have had it.

And back in the good old days when we didn't care about kids choking on toys or shooting things at each other I had this one

LOL, I had the Great Mazinga one, too.  He was great.  Stupid wheels in his feet were for shit on shag carpet, though.

The evil sorcerer figure looks familiar... think I had that one.
