Sigh... Well at least this one doesn't tarnish the prize and she did fight for something explicitly good; girls education.
A deserving winner, I don't know much about the Indian activist she shares it with.

Good choice. Working for disadvantaged children is certainly worthy of recognition and the peace prize seems fitting for that.
I read an article about Kailash Satyarthi now and it sounds like he deserves every accolade possible. He seems to be a good man successfully working towards a noble goal.
Kid's got a bright future, I think.

Judging by her track record it'll be a short one too.
So what is more irrelevant - the Peace Prize or the UN?
Well, IIRC the peace prize comes with a million bucks.

The UN has the power to be irrelevant in more areas than the Peace Prize.

So both are highly relevant from those that can make a living from them. Call that a draw on that front then.

I'd say the UN, simply because the UN got a peace prize, while the peace prize doesn't have a UN.
The UN has lots of specialized agencies that are quite relevant in their particular fields. It is more than the ineffectual security council.

Very true, but specialized agencies quietly doing things that are important don't make for a convenient scapegoat or target of mockery and so is not interesting to the general languish crowd.

Yeah. I'm all for bashing the UN when it is ineffective or the Nobel Peace Prize committee for giving it to unworthy people, but this time Malala really deserves it and is an inspiration, and the UN is doing a lot of worthy things not to deserve to be dismissed en bloc.
I find this type of snarky dismissive bitchiness pretty shitty.

This is a relative preference, obviously, but one that does not talk shit about a young intelligent woman who got shot in the face for her convictions would rank higher on my personal list. :)

I'm fond of the kind that's funny. I don't mind the kind that makes a worthwhile point or takes the piss out of someone who deserves it.
... that's all subjective, of course :)

I think the Nobel Peace Prize committee already made sure that we shouldn't give a damn about who it gives its prizes too, no matter how worthy.

The security council isn't completely useless, it's the General Assembly and Human Rights councils that re FUBAR.

In reality, the peace prize should probably just be renamed the Medicins Sans Frontieres Prize and they should just be given the million dollars a year. I would agree that this year's prizes are the exception, but generally the Nobel Peace Prize is a joke, and MSF could use the cash.
Actually, they could bundle the Nobel Prize for Literature into the MSF Prize as well. That's another complete joke, and MSF could put that million to better use, too.

I'd go against that, anything that raises MSF's profile higher or makes it appear more connected 'officially' to world institutions is a bad idea, those people don't need to be doing their work whilst the bad guys are thinking "hey those infidels/westerners work for the World Government/UN/NWA etc"

Actually, that's precisely the opposite of MSF's problem. They are so widely trusted that infected people in Liberia would rather wait in line outside their clinics than get admitted immediately in non-MSF clinics. NPR had a report on exactly that problem this morning.
At the very least rename it the Good Deed Prize, or the Individual Bravery Prize. It hasn't had a thing to do with peace since the Jew, the Arab, and the Cracker won it.
Obama is not an Arab. How many times must we remind conservatives of this?

"the Arab"? Sadat and Arafat have both won the peace prize.
Deserved or not, the EU Nobel Prize was awarded for its role in continued peace in the continent - its western part at the very least.
