Title: Epic road trip fare - What do you put in the cooler?
Post by: merithyn on June 12, 2014, 04:16:45 PM
I may have mentioned that Max and I are going on a road trip soon. *coughs* Anyway, we're planning to pack a cooler with stuff for lunches and snacks so we're not eating at restaurants the whole trip, and to save a bit of money. The question is: What to bring?

So far we have dried fruits, gourmet sausage, lunch meat, cheese, and bagels. Since I get pretty tired of stuff pretty easily, I was hoping for some ideas of some more interesting things to take along.

What do/would you bring on an epic road trip?

We're boring and just do sandwiches.  A loaf of bred, some salami, some cheese, probably some squeezable mustard, and you have a sandwich within minutes.

Since you have a cooler you can buy fresh fruit too.

Don't over-buy - this kind of stuff is easy to pick up while on the road.

Don't forget to pack a board game if you want.

It's a pretty small cooler, so that's not a problem. It's the sandwiches that I get bored of. Plus, I'm on a pretty strict low-carb diet at the moment, making it more like ham and cheese rolls than sandwiches. :P

How long of a road trip are we talking about?  Pre-made sammiches are the way to go.

for sandwiches.
Also, raspeberry jam with no sugar added (and blueberry jam too).
hot dog sausage, your favorite brand.
If you have a portable bbq, than hot dog stuff.

A staple when I was growing up: vienna sausage sandwiches, with spicy mustard on the bread. Shockingly tasty.

Any access to boiling water?  If so, instant noodles/rice will be nice.  Good to have some hot food once in a while.

Trail mix / nuts!  The sandwich stuff is great, salami, bread, etc. can't go wrong there.  Grape tomatoes and olives too.

If she takes a detour via Germany on her way from Illinois to Alberta, she should probably bring a cooler with some food after all. That's a long, long drive, especially with the ocean in between.

Hate to say it, but I'm in the "stop & pick something up somewhere" camp, though that sometimes backfires.  I tend to want to drive as long as I can without making a stop.  Then when I finally break down & decide to stop somewhere, the options are often crappy.

Cold sandwiches don't do much for me on a road trip (unless it's a freshly made sub).  I can eat one at work or home, no problem.  But in the car it just bothers me for some reason.

Dad would usually pull over shortly after it was filled to let mom dump it out.  Yeah, mom had to hold the weewee jug in the meantime.  They wisely didn't leave it in the hands of a 6-year old.

Some pretty good suggestions. :)

I am, unfortunately, off bread for the time being. I'll be making cream cheese, sausage, and cheese rolls. We've also got gourmet cheese, hummus, carrots, celery, apples, cherries, and trail mix (which I can only have 1/4 cup at a time ). We also got pistachios, almonds, and power bars for snacks. Cooler is big enough for a couple of 2-liters of soda, so Diet Pepsi was procured.

BarristerBoy, do you guys have Red Dragon Inn? If not, we'll bring it, but it's not exactly a game we can play with Max's family. Otherwise, we'll be happy to play whatever you have on hand. (Settlers of Catan is my personal favorite. :) )

Nope.  Sounds like fun. :)

We mostly just have Cataan - though every expansion known to man, and a couple of 5-6 play expansions as well.  I think we have Carcasonne, and some Cataan Histories game.
