What it says on the tin. I ask because this is a question I've asked my students and their most common answer strikes me as odd. I want to see if it's preference limited to my students, or if it's a sentiment that is more widespread.

Regenerative healing, if it includes immortality.

If immortality is not on the table, I choose telekinesis, which is like mastery of magnetism but can't be defeated by rubber bullets or plastic helicopters or similar shit such as has threatened Magneto in the past.

Actually, now I would rather have telekinesis than immortality.  There's always a chance I could be imprisoned, or burned beyond my healing factor's ability to cope.  But with telekinesis?  I cannot overstate how fucked your world order would be.

Btw, I see that regenerative healing is the most popular choice. It shouldn't be if you still experience the pain.

Wouldn't invulnerability be more useful than healing?

I'm somewhat drawn to mind control, but that seems like it would be ethically dubious...

I mean, it's two-three billion years at most.  At some point, you're going to stop functioning/be incinerated as the sun heats up, even with "healing."

Actually, immortality up until about 1990 would be pretty great.  Now and going forward, it'd be very, very hard to keep assuming new identities or to hide your "inheritances" from the authorities. :hmm:

This is why I should have chosen telekinesis.  With telekinesis, you can just make scientists' and their families' heads explode until they come up with a way to make you immortal.

Coming to think about it, plenty of the listed powers have unintended side effects that can render them more a curse than a blessing.

- Super strength: Cool, enjoy punching through walls and lifting tanks over your head, but you still get hurt. Enjoy the broken hands and feet, or even spine. Super strong paraplegic doesn't sound like a nice way to spend your life. Unless you get some kind of super endurance to go with it, I'd say it's a pass.
- Super speed: Depending on how fast it is, unless you have super reflexes and the ability to process information at those speeds, would involve a lot of hitting yourself agains stuff. Get fast enough and enjoy getting incinerated.
- Invulnerability: What has already been said about it, can you get surgery? Or even a flu shot? Or is your skin absolutely unbreakable?
- Regenerative healing has already been discussed as well.
- Telepathy, if it can't be "switched off" would make anyone bonkers.
- Teleportation: Careful about getting solid inside something! Do your clothes travel with you or would you be T-800 naked upon arrival?

And so on...

Teleportation.

No more public transport.

No more crowded roads.

Deciding on the spot to have dinner in Rio de Janeiro and being outside the restaurant five seconds later.

etc.

Like I said, you are under 40.  Who cares if you have any of the other powers if your health is failing.  I would much rather be perfectly healthy until the day I die than have any other power.  You wont fully appreciate this until you get older.

You need to be more specific.
I mean, there is a massive tactical difference from Regenerate/Healing in 60 seconds and doing so instantly.
Also, side perks. Does Regenerative Healing means immortality?

Mind Control, isn't this part of telepathy? How powerful mind control? Can you order people around, how many at a time?
Can you "possess" people? Can you see through their eyes when you are holding back, hands off style? Can you "transfer" when you lose a body?

Invulnerability, what kind? Force shields? Can you use it offensively?
Can you shield other people? Can you "push" your shields down to flight, or at least hover?
Can you keep the water out?

So many questions......

Flight, assuming one can get high enough without freezing, and travel at a decent speed.

I would never consider flight because teleportation can do all that and more.
You can teleport high and glide down, when you get too low, teleport higher again.
No airplane can out run you, since you can always teleport into the plane.

When it comes down to it, there are only a few superpowers that are really valuable.

If you controlled electromagnetism you could vaporize rubber bullets with daylight, raise the potential of the ground so much that lightning shot up and downed the plastic helicopters, then upband your bodies infrared radiation to gama-rays in order to give cancer to writers who come up with premises such as those.

I think the ability to give people emotions would be better than mind control. Most of the herd makes their decisions that way and they'll tend to be more affected long after you left.

Maybe telepathic nanomanufacturing. Or simple omniscience.

If you were immortal, you'd have to "come out" and tell everyone so you don't have the problem of inheriting your own stuff. Fame would be the last thing I'd want. Time Enough for Love touched on the problems of really long life.

For female Korean high school students the run away winner is Teleportation, followed by Time Control and then Mind Control and Invisibility.

The one I want is not listed: the ability to know the answer to any question and to have any knowledge or information you want. That's the real super power.

An extremely tedious Heinlein novel.

An extremely tedious "in parts" Heinlein novel (it's divided into sections, some in the current timeframe, some with stories from the main characters 2000 years of life; the "present day in the future" sections are quite good but the historical stories are universally tedious.)

Have you ever read The Cat Who Walks Through Walls?  That may be the most disjointed book I've ever read.  It started off strong enough that I remember thinking "Why isn't this book more well known?" and by the end I was like "WTF did I just read?"

My mother's more of a Heinlein fan than I am; I know she's read it.

I have, however, read the two books that you probably need to read before reading it ("The Moon is a Harsh Mistress" and "The Number of the Beast"; they're both on the bookshelf a few feet from me.)

A lot of Heinlein's later work is interrelated; they can work as stand alone novels but they work better if you've read the other books that connect to them.

Mystery solved, apparently there's a popular tv show (they said soap opera, but I'm skeptical since their understanding of genres is poor) where a main character can teleport and that's why so many girls want that power.  :D

His continued popularity and perceived importance to the genre would suggest that your opinion lacks a degree of substance in this instance.

All anyone can do with Heinlein is try one or more of his books and see if you like him; as introductory novels "Space Family Stone" or "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress" would seem to be the best choices. Grumbler is right about one thing, anyway; there seems to be no "maybe" about his work - either you like his books or you don't, there's no middle ground.

Has he had continued popularity?  I don't know of any teenage SF fan in my school who has read him, and none has ever brought him up in a conversation about the genre.

Is he still perceived to be of major importance to the genre?  I can't recall seeing anything that suggests that in several decades.  Gibson, Brin and Lem of the last generation, yes.  Of the Golden Agers, Clarke and Asimov, for sure.  Heinlein?  No.  His work just doesn't seem to have withstood the test of time.

I'd certainly avoid The Rolling Stones (as that book was called in the US) and all his other juvies, unless you are aged fourteen or less.  MiaHM is pretty good, if badly, badly dated.  Stranger in a Strange Land is probably his best, and an amusing yet serious work in its own right.  That's it, though.  I never said, nor do i believe, that there is no 'maybe' about his work.  I'd argue that one's impression of Heinlein will depend largely on one's age:  his juvie stuff works very well and you will enjoy it until you get to be about fifteen or so, and then you start to see the purple prose and plot holes.  After age 15, all his books save MiaHM and SiaSL (which have other redeeming qualities) will probably seem highly contrived, absurd, bizarre, or all three.

I actually don't feel that way.  I loved Farnham's Freehold and I thought Stranger in a Strange Land was pretty good too (though weird as hell).  So I both love some of his books, and hate others. :)
