Title: NCAA Hoops 2012
Post by: PDH on August 10, 2012, 08:38:28 PM
I know it is early, but apparently the UWyo men's team has been playing a Summer tourney in...Calgary.  That means the stalwart boys of the Brown and Gold have been faced with the very best that Canada has to offer.  Wyoming has done very well, they have beaten teams in the first couple of games by a combined score of 392-12 or something, I wasn't paying attention.

Still, this means that the Wyoming basketball team should go through the season undefeated.

Canadians are more of the head stomping types, Wyoming players will just remind the refs of all the egregious fouls that the Canadians are committing to that they can call them when it is an opportune time for Wyoming.

Typical Terps season projection:  so promising without Stoglin who bailed for the NBA, so could go the other fucking way without Stoglin who bailed for the NBA.

For the first time in God knows how fucking long, they actually have TWO real promising centers; although the Ukrainian is a frosh, Shaquille Cleare's still a man-beast.

I'm just glad the entire North Carolina starting 5 and the rest of the bench all declared for the NBA at once.  LULZ, fuck you, 'Lina Blue.

Wyoming is bound to be a fair team, without a star (unless Larry Nance Jr really blossoms), but well coached by former Florida asst coach Larry Shyatt.  In the fine tradition of Wyoming athletics, anything above dismal is considered a slam dunk.

Since Wright State had a losing record last season, I'm somewhat anticipating an improvement in wins in the Horizon league. That is the usual pattern.

P.S. Butler Sucks.

Wyoming went to Illinois State last night, the same team that lost to Louisville by 3 last weekend...and in the first half Wyoming got spanked.  3 minutes into the 2nd half Wyoming was down by 19.

Wyoming won by 14.  Jesus.

And then he went to the Vancouver Grizzles where they had to put a person on him full time to make sure he worked out and ate properly.  It started to work.  He slimmed down and played pretty well.  Then the strike happened.  With nobody looking over his shoulder 24/7 he went back to being a slob.  Reported to camp grossly overwieght and out of shape.  His knees blew out within a month or two and that was that.

I don't like Barnes.  His brand of Basketball is grind it out defense, Texas neither does the fast break thing nor the half court offense very well under his leadership.  The only time Texas' offense is any good is when they have a really talented point guard and those do not exactly grow on trees, even with Kevin Durant they had trouble scoring.  Without a TJ Ford or a DJ Augustine they are not getting out of the first weekend of the tournament.  Granted if he can get another one of those guys they will be fine but can we count on that?

Of course if anybody is any good they are leaving for the NBA after their Sophmore year at the latest even if they still have not really done anything in College but that goes for every major conference program these days.  Meh.

Illinois is for real, and would be a real contender in several conferences this year.  Unfortunately for them, the Big Ten isn't one of them.    They face a murder's row of ranked teams (8 of the 18 conference games will be against teams that went into conference play ranked in the top 20).  They do not, unfortunately for them, match up well against Michigan or Ohio, and they play both twice.  Still, they will make the tournament, probably with ease.

Well, Wyoming has the main guy under Barnes (when he was at Clemson) - Shyatt.  Very similar, tough defense, find a way to score, hit the free throws...still Wyoming is 12-0 after tonight, and that is rare air for this team.  I really would like to see Wyoming hoops return to the levels they were back in the 1980s, who knows - starting off a a season this way means that the team is at least playing better than they have for years.

Contrast with Arizona, who is also for real, but apparently won't find any real challenge in the Pac-12, which is looking pretty bad again this year.

Wyoming is now 13-0, tonight they beat SMU.  This is the best start in school history, but Wyoming being Wyoming is also shooting itself in the foot - the number 2 scorer got into an "altercation" (word is he stepped in to stop a fight between some rube and one of the trainers)...and broke his 4th metatarsal.

He is out 4-6 weeks...sigh...

Valmy, we forgot to trash-talk before the UT-WVU game last night.  Both teams are so similar-- difficult pre-season schedule (despite what the idiot announcers in the game said), hovering around .500 entering conference play, great defenses, abysmal offenses, and one impressive win each vs. ranked teams.

I say both teams grind it through conference play to end up with 17 or 18 or so wins apiece and land a 9 or 10 seed.

I missed the game last night but am watching it with Lola right now :)

Horrible loss to Kansas...I guess I should feel encouraged but Texas had a similar melt down with a big lead against UCLA and that didn't mean anything.

9th loss of the season.  They will be at the point soon where they could win every remaining regular season game and still be a bubble team.

QuoteGonzaga, the small Northwest school that consistently delivers big NCAA tournament wins, is on top of The Associated Press' Top 25 for the first time.

Zags' Rise To The Top

Gonzaga's No. 1 ranking in the AP Top 25 is its first in school history. The Zags also are the third non-Big Six school in the past 10 years that voters have sent to the top:
School     Season
Gonzaga     2012-13
Memphis     2007-08
Saint Joseph's     2003-04

The last time more than 5 schools spent time at No. 1 through Week 18 was 2003-04. No. 1 this season, in weeks:
School     Weeks
Indiana     Nine
Duke     Five
Louisville     One
Michigan     One
Gonzaga     One

Riding the best record in Division I at 29-2, the Bulldogs took advantage of Indiana's loss to Minnesota last week and switched places with the Hoosiers, advancing from No. 2 and moving comfortably into the No. 1 spot Monday.

The Spokane, Wash., school best known for Bing Crosby's croons and John Stockton's passes received 51 first-place votes from the 65-member national media panel, 44 more than Indiana.

Gonzaga coach Mark Few, in anticipation of the Bulldogs being ranked No. 1 overall, told ESPN.com's Andy Katz that the historic ranking would be an "honor" for both the school and the city of Spokane.

"If they choose to do it, it's an honor," Few told Katz prior to the release of the poll. "[The No. 1 ranking] would not only be an honor for the program, it's an honor for Spokane.

"It's a big deal in Spokane, but it's not like [we're] carrying any more burden when [ranked] No. 2 or 3 or 5."

Gonzaga becomes the 57th school to be ranked No. 1 since the AP poll began in January 1949. The Bulldogs are the fifth school to hold the top slot this season.

Indiana was the preseason No. 1 and was on top for nine other weeks. Duke, which was No. 1 for five weeks, and Louisville and Michigan, which were both on top for one week, were the other No. 1s this season.

Gonzaga reached No. 2 last week, at the time its highest ranking. After Indiana's defeat, the Bulldogs capped their West Coast Conference regular season with wins over BYU and Portland to pave the way to the one-spot leap. Their first game as a No. 1 team will be in the semifinals of the WCC tournament Saturday night.

Duke, which followed a loss to Virginia with a win over Miami, stayed third with five first-place votes. Kansas and Georgetown both jumped two spots to fourth and fifth. The Hoyas received the other two first-place votes.

Miami, Michigan, Louisville, Kansas State and Michigan State rounded out the top 10.

Virginia Commonwealth and UCLA, both ranked in the AP poll earlier in the season, returned to the poll at 21st and 23rd, respectively. They replaced Butler and Louisiana Tech. Butler fell out of the rankings from last week's No. 20 ranking after a 32-point loss to VCU. Louisiana Tech dropped out after one week at No. 25 despite winning its two games last week by an average of 25 points.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

Hoya-Saxons #2 in Kansas' bracket.  I hope JT3's luck with the NCAA gets better this year.  At least make it to the 16.

So the Ducks were #10 in the country, their great young point guard gets hurt and they lose some games, just miss the regular season title and win the Pac-12 tourney and get a #12 seed. :hmm:

Oh well, college basketball has gotten so incredibly uninteresting that even March Madness doesn't do anything for me at all.

Counting down until baseball season.

Gotta admit I paid less attention to college hoops this year than I had in ages-- all because WVU was so horrible this year.  When I'm not accustomed to your team sucking so much and then suddenly they do, it's just too painful to watch any team play.

I'm not sure that I've ever watched a regular season college basketball game that WVU wasn't playing in.

Yeah, I live in a hotbed of college hoops now, but the whole NC/Duke/NCState thing doesn't really do anything for me.  I've got no dog in that race.

I started out watching as much Big 12 basketball as I could this year (actually last year as well).  I'll also usually watch Cincinnati or the big ACC, Big East or SEC matchups and some A-10 here & there.  But I mostly stopped watching college basketball in January.  Thankfully hockey started back up when it did.

I never do more than one bracket.  Anything more is intellectually dishonest.  Assuming that you're doing them just for fun and/or bragging rights.  If you're actually putting up money, then hedging your bets is a reasonable thing to do.

If you were counting on good basket basketball coming from the traditional powerhouses then yes indeed you were in for a disappointing year.

But if you were willing to watch some of the other games you would have seen some good games.

Even so the selection committee was still kind to the likes of Duke etc.

I like Indiana's chances.  I also hope the kid from Kamloops BC plays at the level of all the expectations being put on his shoulders.  During the selection show someone said Gonzaga would go far because he is the best player in the Country - of course he meant continent  :D

QuoteButler, Creighton and Xavier will join the so-called Catholic 7 schools in the new basketball conference keeping the Big East name, a person familiar with the situation said Tuesday. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the announcement will not take place until Wednesday, when it will be made in conjunction with a news conference on the league's broadcast deal with Fox.

Georgetown, St. John's, Villanova, Seton Hall, Providence, Marquette and DePaul left to form a new league for next season.

Pretty amusing story about SEC basketball coaches whining because their shitty league didn't get more NCAA bids:

http://www.usnews.com/news/sports/articles/2013/03/19/sec-seeking-answers-after-getting-only-3-ncaa-bids (http://www.usnews.com/news/sports/articles/2013/03/19/sec-seeking-answers-after-getting-only-3-ncaa-bids)

The answer to the SEC's problem is to create better basketball programs.  Alabama is not a tourney team - they lost to Mercer, FFS, and of their four games against rated teams, they suffered three blowouts and a closer loss.

Those things are certainly considered but it usually comes down to TV money.  Contracts are different for each conference.

The Catholic thing had something to do with it, but yeah money was the big thing.  Xavier was getting a lousy $400,000 a year  in TV money in the A-10.  In the Big East they'll get like $3 million or so.

Oregon kind of got dissed with a 12 seed, they finished stronger than that.  Plus, the 12 vs 5 seems to always give at least one upset.

In the languish brackets, I saw that Spicey's picks seem a lot like mine with better thought behind them...once again I predict I will finish 2nd to him. (for the 2nd or 3rd time)

Very interesting win by Michigan.  trey Burke was completely cold (2-19 shooting) but the team finally did what the team needed to do, which was pick up the slack.  M ended up 50% from the floor, 45% from three.  Defense held SD to 21% from three-point range.  Belein actually made good floor calls.  They may be the youngest team in the tournament, but they did a lot of growing today.

Michigan looked hot for the first time since they got the number one ranking five weeks ago.  Hope everyone had them going far when they filled out their brackets.  If Burke returns to form and the others keep their confidence, this could be a great run.

I won a tee shirt from ESPN by winning an NIT bracket contest in 2000 or 2001, scoring something like in the 99.5 percentile, practically running the entire bracket.

Cheaply made little tee shirt, but I've kept it all this time.  Why?  Because it was a major award.

I was never convinced that GU was that good a team this year.

They had no post play.  Porter is not a post up guy, and while Lubick and Hopkins are decent on the boards and defensively neither is an offensive threat.

This weakness didn't show so much against man to man teams because GU runs backdoor cuts really, really well, and a big thug stationed on the block actually interferes with cutters.

But against zone teams GU had no offensive options except passing eight times around the perimeter and hoisting a 3 at the shot clock.

I also think that JT3's basketball philosophy and offensive system undercuts the athletic advantage GU often had.
Against Florida GC for example.  The Princeton offense was designed for five middle sized white guys to play competitively with powerhouses.  But it also meant that GU's Mandingo warriors (especially in the back court) felt constrained about breaking down defenses with street ball.

Given the mystique of the Thompson name at GU and what I consider GU's sense of loyalty I'm pretty sure JT3's job is safe as long as he wants it.  But GU is not going to be a truly competitive team (as opposed to a team that can catch a hot streak when it hits 3's) until JT3 recruits quality big men, gets creative on zone offense, and takes the lid off his players.

Thank you and God Bless.  Hoya Saxa.  Death to the unions.

The Ducks have never won it all. Sorry, the choices are Notre Dame, Alabama, and maybe USC and Ohio St. Alabama doesn't have the elitism or long history of media over-hype on their side. They're a poor fit for a New York franchise. The others just haven't won enough. Notre Dame it is.

WHATEVER THE FUCK.

As usual, the forest gets lost for the trees around here. :D

The point is, and was, that I don't like the Ducks and I think they buy more of their success than they earn. Who is and isn't the Yankees of college football is really fucking unrelated to my actual point. :D

That may have been the greatest comeback in Michigan sports history, in terms of the combined difficulty and significance.  Down 10 to a great defensive team with two minutes to go?  Michigan never pulls those out, it seems.  Last night, they did.  I think Kansas got gassed at the end of regulation - they don't play teams that run like Michigan very often.

I don't know if anyone followed the story with Sean Miller's technical foul during the UCLA game this year, and the ensuing blowup on the court, in the press conference, followed by his getting fined $25k afterwards by the Pac-12.

If you did follow all that, then THIS story becomes rather alarming:

http://tracking.si.com/2013/04/01/arizona-sean-miller-targeted-by-pac-12-officials/?sct=hp_t2_a12&eref=sihp (http://tracking.si.com/2013/04/01/arizona-sean-miller-targeted-by-pac-12-officials/?sct=hp_t2_a12&eref=sihp)

Quote

Report: Pac-12 head of officials investigated for targeting Arizona coach Sean Miller (http://tracking.si.com/2013/04/01/arizona-sean-miller-targeted-by-pac-12-officials/)

  (https://languish.org/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fsitracking.files.wordpress.com%2F2013%2F04%2F164829797.jpg%3Fw%3D250%26amp%3Bh%3D250&hash=a8bfc1d18fb689604f1c0f4405b2b4ac7c74cfbc)
Pac-12 coordinator of basketball officials and former NBA referee Ed Rush has been investigated by the Pac-12 for comments made about Arizona (http://www.cbssports.com/collegebasketball/teams/page/ARIZ/arizona-wildcats) coach Sean Miller in meetings that included several Pac-12 referees.
Rush, according to a source within the Pac-12 officiating group, told a group of referees on the Thursday of the Pac-12 tournament in Las Vegas that he would give them $5,000 or a trip to Cancun if they either "rang him up" or "ran him," meaning hit Miller with a technical or toss him out of the game. Rush then reiterated during a Friday morning meeting, according to one referee in attendance, that officials should take similar action against Miller if he did anything on Friday in the Pac-12 semifinals against UCLA (http://www.cbssports.com/collegebasketball/teams/page/UCLA/ucla-bruins).
"He was emphatic about not dealing with him (Miller)," the ref told CBSSports.com. "He made that perfectly clear."
Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott issued a statement to CBSSports.com:
"Based on the review, we have concluded that while Rush made inappropriate comments that he now regrets during internal meetings that referenced rewards, he made the comments in jest and the officials in the room realized they were not serious offers," Scott told CBSSports.com. "Following our review, we have discussed the matter with Rush, taken steps to ensure it does not happen again, and communicated our findings to all of our officials."
Referee Michael Irving -- who sources confirmed was in the room with Rush on Friday -- hit Miller with a controversial technical with 4:37 left in the Pac-12 semifinals against UCLA. The Bruins wound up winning the game, 66-64. Miller was upset about a double-dribble call (http://www.latimes.com/sports/sportsnow/la-sp-sn-arizona-coach-sean-miller-technical-20130316,0,3536366.story) on Arizona point guard Mark Lyons (http://www.cbssports.com/collegebasketball/players/playerpage/1647632/mark-lyons), arguing that a UCLA player had gotten his hand on the ball before Lyons picked it up.
Miller later claimed he did not direct any profanities at Irving or any of the other officials at the time. The technical was his first of the season.
"The reason I got the technical foul is because I said, 'He touched the ball. He touched the ball. He touched the ball. He touched the ball. He touched the ball,'" Miller said immediately after the loss. Miller was reprimanded by the Pac-12 and fined $25,000 by the league for confronting a game official after the game had concluded, as well as for acting inappropriately toward a Pac-12 staffer in the hallway of the arena.
"They don't talk to me," he said of the officials. "If I cuss and I'm out of control and I've been warned, shame on me. When I say, 'He touched the ball, he touched the ball' because I thought the two of them could have maybe gotten together and explained that, in fact, he did touch the ball."
The source said the technical foul call was out of character for Irving.
"That's not Michael (Irving)'s mentality as a ref," said the source, who wished to remain anonymous for fear of losing assignments within the Pac-12. "He's a really good ref and manages situations without using technicals. It was absolutely because of what was said in the meeting. There's no doubt in my mind. It's a bad position to be put in."
"As a basketball referee, it's a horrible position to be put in by your supervisor," he continued. "If you don't do anything, you probably won't get any good games down the road -- or you may not get any games at all. That leaves us in a tough spot."
Rush was a longtime NBA official who was also the NBA's director of officiating from 1998-2003. He replaced Bill McCabe as the Pac-12's supervisor of officials in 2012, after McCabe retired.
"He's a bully," the referee said of Rush. "He just bullies everyone. That was his whole tenor of the meeting on Friday. We're all afraid of him. He's the most respected basketball officiating person on the West Coast and he's been given all the juice."
Ed Rush did not wish to comment further, telling CBSSports.com, "Larry's made a statement. I'm in concert with what he said. We're going to move on from there."

What I really fucking hate about that story, and stories like it, is the bullshit "Oh, well, that is wrong, because that coaching style just doesn't work!" sort of comments you see from coaches and players. One of his former players said "Yeah, coach was really hard on us because he wanted us to be tough..."

Even Rice himself basically said "Yeah, I fucked up, that was wrong of me, you can't coach that way. That style of coaching just isn't acceptable...".

What bothers me about it is the idea that his actions were some kind of considered (if misguided) strategy and plan. I don't see that at all - what I see is a asshole who has zero fucking ability to control his temper. He isn't trying to toughen anyone up, he is throwing a temper tantrum and becoming physically abusive because he cannot control himself.

This isn't a "coaching style". It is being a douchebag asshole prick. And it comes through elsewhere in his life, I am quite sure.

I don't even think it is a matter of whether it was a joke or not. Of course he wasn't really going to pay anyone $5,000 if the rang up Miller.

Joke or no joke, he was clearly and certainly sending a message to his officials. A message that was heard and acted upon. The way he conveyed that message may have been via a joke, but there is no question in my mind that he was telling his officials that he wanted Miller rung up if there was ANY reason to do so, and if they did not, he would take that as mark against them.

And that is simply not acceptable. If Miller was a problem in the past, and that problem was not being dealt with by Rush's officials, then the correct message is "Here are X examples of Coach Miller and/or Monty/Howland/whoever being a dumbass in a game, and nobody rang him. That is not acceptable. If Coach Miller or any other coach acts like this, you must reach down into your panties, grab your balls, and ring him up!".

But specifically targeting Miller and basically demanding that someone ring or run him? Wrong wrong wrong.

And now that it is out, Rush cannot possibly continue in his position. He has zero credibility anymore in the conference.

Now, I imagine the reason Scott doesn't want to fire him out of hand is that Scott is the one who told Rush that he needed to get his officials to start handling the coaches better, so feels some responsibility for the entire mess. I *hope* that Scott is not the one who told Rush to specifically target Miller though - because if that turns out to be the case, then Scott needs to go as well, and I think he has been a great commissioner for the Pac12 so far.

I watched the outside the lines video regarding the Rutgers coach abusing his players.  What I dont get is why they waited so long to fire him.

Agreed

Did you watch the video?

One thing I thought was pretty funny.

When Rice beans the player in the head with a basketball, there is an assistant/grad/whatever standing right next to him with another ball which he immediately hands to Rice.

That is when you know you've made it to the big times - when you have a lackey follow you around so you can immediately reload when you nail one of your players in the head with a basketball.

I don't know if anyone followed the story with Sean Miller's technical foul during the UCLA game this year, and the ensuing blowup on the court, in the press conference, followed by his getting fined $25k afterwards by the Pac-12.

If you did follow all that, then THIS story becomes rather alarming:

http://tracking.si.com/2013/04/01/arizona-sean-miller-targeted-by-pac-12-officials/?sct=hp_t2_a12&eref=sihp (http://tracking.si.com/2013/04/01/arizona-sean-miller-targeted-by-pac-12-officials/?sct=hp_t2_a12&eref=sihp)

Rush needs to be fired.  I don't care if it was a joke--if you're in his position, YOU CAN'T MAKE THAT JOKE.  Period.  It's pretty disturbing that Larry Scott doesn't realize this.

I don't even think it is a matter of whether it was a joke or not.

Isn't that pretty much what I said?

Not that I'm rooting for Syracuse, but I still can't figure out how you determine an offensive charge in a situation like that, when a defender has his feet planted.  I mean, the guy was in the air.

Sometimes I just don't understand this game.

You look to see if the defender has both feet planted at the moment the guy with the ball leaves the ground.  I saw it as maybe a 60/40 charge/block call.  The bad call came right before, when they fouled out Carter-Williams when the Michigan player clearly gave him a forearm shiver.

Beilein's team racking up 3's to get out to a big lead, Pitino's Cardinals come back & erase the deficit like nothing happened.  I've seen this before.  Elite 8, 2005.  WVU couldn't miss a 3, including an almost half-court shot from Beilein's son.  Then Pitino, almost as if he purposefully had been holding back, unleashed hell.

Michigan played a hell of a lot deeper into the tourney than I expected, and they gave Louisville a good game.  No dishonor in that.

I was thinking that that was just your luck.  When you were in Boston the Red Sox had their short moment of glory then you move to Kentucky and UK and Louisville dominate the College BB landscape.  Though I guess you do not hate them, you merely do not care.

I would never ask you for such a thing.  But if you could tell me in advance which team the crew has decided should win that would be nice.
