So it wasn't real for the first couple of centuries? What was it then?

Typically an occupation or a birth place.

Not all last names were occupations or places of birth. Or even the names of their fathers, or descriptions.

All names were made up at some point.

I met a man who wasn't there
He wasn't there again today
I wish, I wish he'd go away...

Yeah but all the best ones were.  Like Eric Bloodaxe.  I would definitely have taken his daughter's name.

I found a 13th-century last name from England that was Aldinoch. It means "old enough".

Pretty sure "Bloodaxe" was a byname, not a family name.

Ed should go by his old Sioux name, Stands With Child With Child.

If your father in law was nicknamed "Bloodaxe", you'd probably take whatever name he wanted you to take.

Yeah that was long before family names.  Too bad.  There could be thousands of people in England now with names like 'Oliver Boneless'.
