 He ate at a Waffle House this morning (in Manassas, though).

We got our first (as far as I know) Waffle House on this side of the river.  It's a couple miles from my house & hasn't actually opened yet.  So it's new and the building was new construction.  Already looks run-down to me, maybe just because of that horrible sign.

Okay, they might as well have some in Toledo for all I know.  We just didn't have any in Cincy that I was aware of  :blurgh:

So my bro and sis-in-law decided to rent on a six month lease and then buy a house this summer.  Smart move, and I had suggested he do that very thing at one point... that way he ain't buying a house blind and really has time to shop around.  Their apartment is someplace in Richmond proper but I forget what he said the neighborhood is called.

Your brother can visit Lettow Davis' house anytime he wants now.

My brother's period of unemployment after moving lasted exactly one week.

My sister-in-law is mad because he'll be making more than her, too.  She seemed to think she should be making the most since they moved for her job.

I have a generally negative view of Richmond. In the past I'd say dazzling urbanites, uncleanliness, etc typified the city and it had very few redeeming qualities. Like a lot of Virginia it's cleaned up its image immensely since my youth and there are some trendy and nice areas in Richmond proper now but I wouldn't know any so much to live in or anything. Richmond is still one of those cities where anyone with money is going to want to live outside the city limits, Glen Allen is particularly nice I think.

To be candid Virginia is nearing what I'd consider subprime territory for living. You have extreme Yuppification in the northern third of the state that has made it uninhabitable (and this extends down to where I live), the western/southwestern portions of the State have always been nice for outdoorsy stuff but too infested with hillbillies to set up permanent residence. I still really love the Williamsburg area, but it's dicey because much of Hampton Roads aside from the Williamsburg area is pretty shitty as far as I'm concerned.

Otto, the neighborhood they rent now is "just ok" according to my bro, but they're expecting to buy in July-August and last I checked with him Glen Allen was #1 on the list.... but since they have so much time to look they're wisely going to take their time.

The one thing about that is that where they live now is really close to the DuPont plant so my sister-in-law keeps saying how awesome her commute is, and Glen Allen is on the other side of the city so I wonder if she'll try to twist my brother's arm into living closer than Glen Allen.  When they lived in Philly her commute was well over an hour each way in horrible traffic, and now it's five minutes long. :)

Me = here.  Specifically in Midlothian where they ended up buying.  Seems like a nice town.  It actually reminds me of a less crowded version of suburban Atlanta for some reason... probably all the stands of southern white pine all over the place that I wouldn't have expected to see here.

We went to his place today called the Virginia Diner that was on one of those food network shows.  Place was in the middle of nowhere on the road from Petersburg to Norfolk in the middle of pinewoods and cypress swamps.  Here's what I had:

slice of Virginny ham
fried catfish
hushpuppies
fried okra
greens with bacon and sausage and vinegar
lowcountry boil (it only seemed to have sausage tho, no shrimp)
biscuits
banana pudding
chess pie
peanut pie
