Whatever it is, yeah, it's retarded alright.  Why can't a TFL just be a TFL?  Why does it have to be a "defeat", when there could be multiple players involved in how it develops?

The offense.  And a TFL is still a TFL, lefty.  They've just combined it with other things here to get an overall picture of how a player is performing.

You tackle a guy on 3rd and 10 after 8 yards and get a "defeat?"  That's retarded.

You just made the offense punt, so yeah, that's a defeat.  It doesn't matter how many yards they got, they're giving the ball back to your offense.  If they don't punt, you don't get one until you stop them on 4th down.  The drive has to end because of the play made. 

The defeat stat is one of football outsiders things, you spergy fuckin mooks.  I just shows basically how much a defensive player is kicking ass, and includes a lot of things.  It's not that difficult to understand.  Stop nuking it.

Defeats: The total number of plays by a defensive player that prevent the offense from gaining first down yardage on third or fourth down, stop the offense behind the line of scrimmage, or result in a turnover. "Plays" refers to tackles, passes defensed, fumbles forced, or interceptions. See Stops.
