Interesting.  I'm unhappy 'neo-pagan' and Scientology are as high as they are <_<

That and your actual religion is down near the bottom.
Oh I've never really been practising.  I'm a cultural Catholic :)

I'm curious what the respective positions of Mahayana and Theravada Buddhism means.  I got Mahayana a lot higher wherease for most people it seemed to trail after Theravada.  Anyone know?

Malthus?
I think Mahayana is more pacifistic whereas Theravada allows for violence.

Weird, I disagreed with pacifism

As far as I can tell Theravada is Buddhism as is practised in most of South-East Asia and Mahayana is the East Asian tradition.  That doesn't help me much though :(

Theravada Buddhism is closer to a philosophy and Buddha was a normal man who ceased to exist after death.  Although in practice most worship him like a a sort of god. Mahayana is more traditional religion with a pantheon of gods & spirits, Buddha was not a normal man, etc.

At my most spiritual/"open minded":

Quote1.    Unitarian Universalism  (100%)
2.    Secular Humanism (98%)
3.    Liberal Quakers (84%)
4.    Neo-Pagan (81%)

7.    Theravada Buddhism (72%)
8.    Taoism (68%)
9.    New Age (67%)
10.    Reform Judaism (59%)

At my least:

Quote1.    Secular Humanism  (100%)
2.    Unitarian Universalism (92%)
3.    Nontheist (89%)
4.    Liberal Quakers (72%)
5.    Mainline to Liberal Christian Protestants (67%)
6.    Theravada Buddhism (66%)
7.    Neo-Pagan (65%)
8.    Reform Judaism (60%)
9.    Taoism (51%)
10.    Sikhism (46%)

On average that's a clear win for Secular Humanism, which sounds about right.

Theravada is "little raft" Buddhism, much closer to the original teachings, and much more strict. It involves an ascetic tradition and a very strong emphasis on abandoning desire and achieving a state of "wantlessness" through self denial. When you think Buddhist monk, you're usually thinking of Theravada (well, or Zen, but that's another ball of wax entirely). Therevada's very much a philosophical tradition, there's little to no deification of Buddha in the practice.

Mahayana is "big raft" Buddhism, closer in practice to Christianity, with a functional deification of Buddha and a greater acceptance of, shall we say, inadequate devotion to ascetism and whatnot.

That, at least, is how I remember it. I haven't actually studied the matter for... better than a decade now.

You can be a Jew who secretly believes in Jesus.

Besides, as far as I can tell, no question asked if you believe in Jesus. Are you retarded? :)
