the answer is obviously both: depending on the who's doing the running.

at the rate it's going it might be before the next weekend.

Wasn't Assad in Iran currently, begging for help? His family is apparently already in Russia. Maybe they'll be neighbours to Yanukovich

Damascus appear to be surrendering.
I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011

Well yes. Old regime loyalists fleeing for their life would be a thing even if the replacement was fine.
But people were generally fleeing to idlib. Not from there

That won't happen of course but funnily enough Assad has sent a Christian leader some kind of a priest to Orban to "seek his aid to mediate" or somesuch.

Judging from how the Christian "leaders" in Jerusalem behave towards each other around these times, I predict this will go really, bigly, greatly well.

The devastation of Syria physically alone will make any "victory" Phyrric and the country will need major help for years. And who will step in? Not the EU. Not Turkey. Russia and China. The French ties to Syria are at best a bit, shall we say, infected with the virus of colonial history and not letting the Hashemites onto the throne. So Marcron will be eating a macaron and thinking of his MILF wife.

We'll need a lot of Jimmy Carters building homes for displaced should they choose to come back to what can only be described as a wasteland.

I'm just glad Nasrallah didn't live to see the this day. :(  Maybe, if we are lucky, Assad didn't either. :)

So, Trump was right to fear Muslim immigration?

As it is, most of the country is being taken over by radical Islamists with ties to Turkey.

There is nothing to be rebuilt there.  At best, there could be a seperation between a part of the South and a part of Kurdistan, but the rest is forgotten.

Heading to the Western Mediterranean coast, Iran or maybe Moscow?

Breaking

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has boarded a plane and left Damascus to an unknown destination, Reuters news agency has just reported quoting two senior Syrian officers.

The SOHR war monitor also says a private plane that has left Damascus airport was likely carrying Assad. Government troops at the airport were discharged after its departure, it said.

This comes as rebel forces say they have started entering the Syrian capital.

Damn. Like a house of cards.

The bad guys have won and the bad guys have lost.

But...what happens next? Is Syria about to collapse into a bunch of smaller states?

I predict, given the current timeline, that whatever happens it will be extremely stupid, and extremely dangerous.
I have come to believe that the whole world is an enigma, a harmless enigma that is made terrible by our own mad attempt to interpret it as though it had an underlying truth.
