I guess it depends on how you classify rape.  If we are talking about getting involuntarily felt up or something like that as attempted rape then I guess that number is lower than I would have expected perhaps things are getting better.  If we are talking like violent rape, or drugings and that sort of thing, then that is a very depressing stat.

trend is increasing in Ontario too. Which is ironic because it's the government that forced them into it. Our strippers are now licensed and tracked (and often hassled) so no more incognito co-ed strippers.

I'm always deeply skeptical of these "huge numbers of women raped" stories.  A while back they were pushing the line that 1/3 of college women had been sexually assaulted.  Turns out they included "unwelcome sexual advances" in that category.

Anyway, I agree a bit with Gups regarding how beliveable it is, as there's no hard data. Some of the info quoted on the article is from a previous one about a study done by some professor, though, and there's some data on the issue:

Rape is separated into three types, completed forced penetration, attempted forced penetration, and completed alcohol or drug facilitated penetration.
- -Among women, rape includes vaginal, oral, or anal penetration by a male using his penis. It also includes vaginal or anal penetration by a male or female using their fingers or an object.
- -Among men, rape includes oral or anal penetration by a male using his penis. It also includes anal penetration by a male or female using their fingers or an object.

Ah that is a very specific definition of rape.  That is really bad news it is still so high then.

Is it:

Rape is defined as any completed or attempted unwanted vaginal (for women), oral, or anal penetration through the use of physical force (such as being pinned or held down, or by the use of violence) or threats to physically harm, including times when the above conditions are satisfied and when the victim was drunk, high, drugged, or passed out and unable to consent.

Which is fine.  Vulnerability does not make a person an acceptable target of predation.

Or is it:

Rape is defined as any completed or attempted unwanted vaginal (for women), oral, or anal penetration through the use of physical force (such as being pinned or held down, or by the use of violence) or threats to physically harm, as well as times when Rape is also inferred when the victim was unable to consent due to being drunk, high, drugged, or passed out.

Because then you're casting a very broad net.
