Don't have to be English nationals, could be Eastern European exchange students.

Seems to be based solely on calls from students to some fringe organisation doubling from ? to 2x?

Dooesn't depress me much.

Josquius

Number 1 isn't necessarily sad. Are they street walking or just escorting?
We really should adopt the Dutch system there (and in other things). Stupid government.

Number 2 of course is a different league.

I thought students were supposed to become strippers to fund their studies?  They go hardcore in the UK.

I guess it depends on how you classify rape.  If we are talking about getting involuntarily felt up or something like that as attempted rape then I guess that number is lower than I would have expected perhaps things are getting better.  If we are talking like violent rape, or drugings and that sort of thing, then that is a very depressing stat.

trend is increasing in Ontario too. Which is ironic because it's the government that forced them into it. Our strippers are now licensed and tracked (and often hassled) so no more incognito co-ed strippers.

I'd say one depressing story.

I guess you have a backup plan when this whole law thing fails to pan out for you.

I'm always deeply skeptical of these "huge numbers of women raped" stories.  A while back they were pushing the line that 1/3 of college women had been sexually assaulted.  Turns out they included "unwelcome sexual advances" in that category.

They also do that in the UK, it seems:

QuoteThe NUS also told BBC 5 live Breakfast it estimated about 20% of women working in lap dancing clubs were students.

Anyway, I agree a bit with Gups regarding how beliveable it is, as there's no hard data. Some of the info quoted on the article is from a previous one about a study done by some professor, though, and there's some data on the issue:

This is what I could find in their report:

QuoteRape is defined as any completed or attempted unwanted vaginal (for women), oral, or anal penetration through the use of physical force (such as being pinned or held down, or by the use of violence) or threats to physically harm and includes times when the victim was drunk, high, drugged, or passed out and unable to consent. Rape is separated into three types, completed forced penetration, attempted forced penetration, and completed alcohol or drug facilitated penetration.
- -Among women, rape includes vaginal, oral, or anal penetration by a male using his penis. It also includes vaginal or anal penetration by a male or female using their fingers or an object.
- -Among men, rape includes oral or anal penetration by a male using his penis. It also includes anal penetration by a male or female using their fingers or an object.

Valmy

Ah that is a very specific definition of rape.  That is really bad news it is still so high then.

Dislike wording of the definition.  I find it unclear.

Is it:

QuoteRape is defined as any completed or attempted unwanted vaginal (for women), oral, or anal penetration through the use of physical force (such as being pinned or held down, or by the use of violence) or threats to physically harm, including times when the above conditions are satisfied and when the victim was drunk, high, drugged, or passed out and unable to consent.

Which is fine.  Vulnerability does not make a person an acceptable target of predation.

Or is it:

QuoteRape is defined as any completed or attempted unwanted vaginal (for women), oral, or anal penetration through the use of physical force (such as being pinned or held down, or by the use of violence) or threats to physically harm, as well as times when Rape is also inferred when the victim was unable to consent due to being drunk, high, drugged, or passed out.

Because then you're casting a very broad net.
