I'm not sure that best game of the year going to a game that has been out a month sends the right message about the industry.

IIRC the best games do tend to come out towards the end and beginning of the year with there being a long summer drought.
Or at least thats the way things used to be, I guess it still holds up.

No it isn't.  Battlefield is much better than MW3 could ever hope to be.

At any rate, any list that has a meh game like Skyrim as the game of the year is immediately discredited.

I'd call this foul "caving to hype."  At least I note that they seem to have had the PC edition in mind and gave the XB360 award to Arkham City, so the modders could make the award genuinely deserved retroactively.

I played Skyrim for about a weekend. Its fun...but it wasn't earthshattering for me or anything.

You'd be surprised.  Also, keep in mind that part of my job is to sell video games- I'm well acquainted with the hype machine because I'm part of it.  MW3 sold out quick, but once we got it back in stock, we haven't exhausted our supply yet.  Skyrim, on the other hand... I haven't seen a copy in our store since the day it was released.  And I'm neck-deep in XBox-Live-Fragfest territory.
