It's now cooled down and there's no sun and I'm unhappy that I have to wear trousers again :( <_<

You lucky bastard. You lucky lucky bastard.

Huge storm moved across the midwest today. Over 400,000 people in central Iowa without power, including the entire city of Ames - where my daughter lives.

Admiral Yi? You okay? I heard Iowa City got walloped pretty badly, too.

Yi hasn't visited Languish since so I guess he did lose power :hmm:

I did lose power.  Just got it back today.

This type of storm is called a derecho; I had never heard the term before.  Straight line winds, not circular.

Trees down all over town.  My front yard looks like a bocage.  The side wall on my patio got knocked down.

Life without power is weird and stressful.

He's fickle. It wasn't that cold. ;)

I'm still in trousers because, apparently, summer is over :(

It's been raining a fair bit the last few days. This morning 24°C with high humidity in my apartment feels significantly worse than stuffy 27°C felt before the rains.

What could be the highest temperature ever reliably recorded on Earth - 130F (54.4C) - may have been reached in Death Valley National Park, California.

I thought it routinely got hotter than that in one of the Iranian deserts. :hmm:

I think the American standards meet or are the international standards for recording weather, whereas a lot of the historical records in the Middle East and North Africa seem questionable.

Also haven't many areas of Death valley and especially Furnace Creek (what a great name) haven't hardly change in 100-150 years, so the year on year records are likely to show real climate changes.

In contrast with over here, we now regularly get " today's highest temperature was a heathrow airport"; no matter how well shielded the official weather station, surely the hundreds of acres of flat concrete and tarmac, must generate a different micro-climate as compared to the surrounding landscape?

Got so much rain the first half of the month. Floods everywhere. :(

Jet: So what kind of woman is she? What's Julia like?
Faye: Ordinary. The kind of beautiful, dangerous ordinary that you just can't leave alone.
Jet: I see.

Video of the derecho.  This was filmed in Cedar Rapids, about 45 minutes NNW of me.
