Sounds like a pretty good time to commit not too serious crimes in Cali!

We need other ways of punishment for lesser crimes than prison.

Bring back flogging.

Being lazy is bad; unless you still get what you want, then it's called "patience".
Hubris must be punished. Severely.

The medievals were only too right in taking nolo episcopari as the best reason a man could give to others for making him a bishop. Give me a king whose chief interest in life is stamps, railways, or race-horses; and who has the power to sack his Vizier (or whatever you care to call him) if he does not like the cut of his trousers.

Government is an abstract noun meaning the art and process of governing and it should be an offence to write it with a capital G or so as to refer to people.

I've always been of the mind that we should extend executions for serious offenders (rapists, murderers, major tax evaders), while rolling up punishment on the other end (decriminalizing drug use and traffick, minor punishments for minor A+B, etc.).

And the stocks. Public humiliation FTW!

Jet: So what kind of woman is she? What's Julia like?
Faye: Ordinary. The kind of beautiful, dangerous ordinary that you just can't leave alone.
Jet: I see.
Faye: Like an angel from the underworld. Or a devil from Paradise.

Isn't some part of Muslim law like that? Do we really want to be like them?

Muslim law would execute them for some silly religious reason.

We would execute them all for sensible, fiscal reasons.

I am amazed at the sheer number of prison inmates in California.

It's the US. Something like 3% of the Adult Population is in Prison.

That's not very many...percentage-wise.

Considering how many responsible taxpaying citizens it takes to support the costs of imprisoning one inmate, 3% is a cripplingly large number.
