Taboo over the name of God

Makes no logical sense to me, as the real "name" of God in Judaism is unknown. However, lots of things in Judaism make no sense - it "makes sense" in a symbolic manner; it is an allusion to the notion (very ancient in many cultures and not confined to gods) that the ultimate gesture of respect towards someone or something is to make its very name taboo - as names have power and naming something is, in a way, to exercise power over it. The result is that, eventually, a new discriptor is used (the vowel-less "YWHW" becomes "Elohim" or Lord or God); the new discriptor becomes taboo in its turn ("God" becomes "G-d"). And so on.
