So.. who's going to win?

Polls point to a narrow Liberal win.

Fucking libtards bringing their goddamn liberalism to Canada.  :yuk:

So there's no chance for the NDP? What happened to them? I thought they were leading in the polls a few weeks ago.

They were.  And now they're not.  Not sure quite what happened to them.  I thought Mulcair ran a strong campaign.  They lost support in Quebec, which is where they won the bulk of their seats last time.

Valmy

People remembered they are dirty commies who would raise taxes and hug immigrants. That and their leader is an uncharismatic bore.

Me I guess.  But not really - if I could survive the NDP winning in Alberta, I can survive yet another Liberal government in Ottawa.

As stated upthread, my read of the situation is that the Cons focus on identity politics (read: making a big deal about what Muslims wear) "worked" to the extent of eroding the NDP in Quebec, where the NDP had made surprising gains.

Unfortunately (for them), this just made the Libs look like a stronger contender. Also, lessened the perceived threat (for what it was worth) of maddened NDP socialists gaining power  ;) ... so a lot of people who may have held their noses and voted Con out of fear of the NDP, would happily vote Lib (once that threat was removed).

In a three-party race, simply plugging wedge issues to knock *one* party out isn't good enough - you have to look at the big picture, the effect of that move on the voters as a whole. The Cons failed to do that, and looks like they will be soundly punished for it.

That is going to be a question debated within the NDP for a long time.

Gilles Duceppe happened & the Bloc started campaigning on how Mulcair keeps saying different things depending on the language.

Ironically....Harper brought up Niqab. Harper's anti-Muslim views popular in Quebec. NDP was against it. NDP support in Quebec dropped. Anti-Harperists nationwide started to see Liberals as better odds than NDP of beating Harper because of this and switched allegiances.

Okay, so while watching the baseball games the last few days I was exposed to an insane number of political ads.  The Liberals are running one where it's clips of a speech Justin is giving - talking about how leaders need to bring people together.

The content was bland and unexciting, but whatever.  Lots of politics is bland and unexciting.  My thought that was they were presenting it like this was some great political oratory: but to me Justin sounded exactly like the high school drama teacher that he was - over-emphasized, over-enunciated and over-the-top.

So I put it to you Languish - am I wrong?

I am.  I was resigned to see Prime Minister Mulcair and met with a fiscalist to prevent the worst from happenning, but Trudeau, I just can't.  Not only is he pandering to extremists to gain a few more votes, but he'll do his best to further the assimilation of French Canadians outside Quebec and keep on screwing my provinces as his liberal predecessors did.  Life is going to be hell for us, and most English Canadians are going to smile happily, as usual.

I now expect a sovereignist victory at the next provincial election.

Saying that Harper has anti-Muslim views is like saying the police age anti-italian agenda everytime they arrest mafia members.  Or that anyone against sectish behavior is anti-Christian.

Besides, 90% of Canadians supported the ban on the niqab for citizenship ceremony.  Last I checked, Quebec was under 25% of the population in this country.

And yet, the Liberals have created the most division in this country.  Before Trudeau the elder, the PQ did not even have a single MP in parliament.  Before Chrétien, there was no seperatist party in Ottawa and no one ever heard of a fringe movement for western independance.  Shortly after his election, there was a 2nd referendum on independance in Quebec.  And I now expect a 3rd one within a few years.

No - I fear Trudeau is, indeed, not really PM material. Assuming the election goes as predicted, I just hope he grows into the role.

Fact is that people are voting the way they are because they are tired of Harper, not because they are enamored of Trudeau. Had things gone differently in the campaign, they could just have easily been voting NDP.

That's the problem with throw-the-bums-out voting cycles: you have to live with the other bums.  ;)
