Sure. I don't know how it works exactly either. It doesn't matter to Quebec.

It does, but you sleep better at night thinking it doesn't.  The constitution gives provinces a lot of power over local matters.

And other things, like your separate immigration system is merely a political deal exists only because the federal government allows it to exist.

Edit, also the cultural legislation can exist because the Charter contains a notwithstanding clause.  Something you may start caring about a little more depending on how the SCC rules on the upcoming case interpreting what that clause means.

In several surveys, the overwhelming first choice for what makes Canada unique is multiculturalism. This, in a world collapsing into stupid, impoverishing hatreds, is the distinctly Canadian national project.

Quote from: crazy canuck on November 03, 2025, 09:24:41 PMWhat do you think, does the opposition pass the budget tomorrow, or force an election?

I don't think any party is up for an election. Obviously the Cons. don't want to pass it, but I'm sure they've spoken to NDP and Bloc and Green,  to make sure there is enough support--so they can still look good without forcing an election.

I think you are right. But I wonder how rational PP is these days, and how much he might view an election as a way to survive the leadership review.

Maybe. but if he won't get more seats, he's guaranteeing his demise.

Agreed, but that goes back to me wondering how rational he is these days, or perhaps the better way to state it is I wonder how much his perception of the world is dependent on the alt right social media. He may think Canada can't wait to make him PM.

Has he served long enough to get his full pension?  Maybe he'd be willing to go out in a blaze of glory on the chance, however infinitesimal, that he could win. Then he can go onto a lucrative career as a YouTube huckster pandering to the (sadly large) group of Canadian conservatives that wish they were American conservatives.

He was elected in his 20s back in the early 2000s.  Being a politician is all he has ever really done. That could be his next career path.

Quote from: Zoupa on Today at 04:02:59 AMWell, he's quite serious about Canadians having no other culture than American culture, hates the British, thinks Francophones are stupid, that Liberals are traitor and that we'd be better off as the 51st state.

And his accent is fake. I don't know if he's trying to pull off Newfoundlander with that "house" and "about" pronunciation but dude is ridiculous. He's from Vancouver for fuck's sake.

I think Trumpism has cured him of his American hard on. But yes. He is a weird political snowflake. But his videos usually have a goofy style, even when talking about something like Canadian Constitutional history or why he thinks Wilfred Laurier is Canada's best PM (not exactly a controversial opinion...). So it always seems like he is slightly making fun of what he is talking about. His weird accent only makes it sillier.

But this video was a little unusual because he seemed legitimately outraged by this Quebec Constitution business so I was just checking in since, as he himself even admits, nobody else really seems to care about this at all.

He sounds just like regular Federalists from around here. Totally surprised & outraged that a government and most of the population of Quebec doesn't care much for the great project that is Canada. Quebec doesn't foster it, barely respects it really, but looks for ways to exploit it. Of course no Quebec government is spitting on the 32 billions $ the Federal government is giving. Why would they do that?

Nobody else seems to care because it is a non-issue. He just doesn't understand what he is talking about.
