I like ID4 as a dumb, but very fun movie.

I remember it as one of the few films that I went to see on its opening day...the crowd was huge, and it was also one of the few scenes I've seen in theaters where the theatre goers actively cheered during the movie.

That may just make many here think of said moviegoers as dumb sheep, but I think it speaks well for the appeal of the movie at that time.

I think people forget what a big deal this movie was, and was supposed to be.
Saw it on opening weekend;  the first time I'd ever been to a movie where, directly in front of the theater in the galleria, they were selling the movie merchandise and toys.  Bought the F/A-18, and chased the cat with it.

Also if IIRC they spent a shit ton of $ in promotion, it was designed to be a big summer blockbuster, and it was.

I would have preferred continuation of Atlantis over 3 new movies.

Oh yeah that ID4 hype was everywhere.  It may not be the best movie of the nineties but it is certainly amongst the ninetiest.  That and 'American Beauty', not sure anybody could relate to 'oh the soul crushing ennui of unlimited prosperity' these days.

It's opening day was July 4th.  It had commercials blowing up the White House during the Super Bowl, for fuck's sake.

I was blown away by ID4's effects when I saw it in the theaters. The story was not exactly Shakespeare, but the pewpewpew, the BOOOMs and the lighthearted humor was great summer fare, and it's still a mindless fun movie to watch.
I am, somehow, less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein's brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops.

Yeah, exactly.  I've never really understood the hate for it from some quarters.  I don't quite get how anyone could see it as a great movie, either.  It's big, dumb fun.

I've been watching a hidden camera show called "Bad Robot".
It is very funny. Machines have been made/altered to fuck with members of the public.
When faced with a machine rather than just a rude person people show their true rage.

Gotta say, really enjoying Gotham, Flash and Arrow.

This is really the Age of Nerd.

I didn't like Atlantis.  I won't like the remakes either.

ID4 was the first time a movie was referred to by initials.  I liked it.  It was a bigtime adventure movie, like the Poseidon Adventure. It had no pretensions of being anything more serious.

So three more names to throw into the ring for 90's action star:  Pierce Brosnan, who went from TV's Remington Steele to star in the large number of  90's and early '00's Bond flicks as well as Dante's Peak, Robinson Crusoe, and The Thomas Crown Affair.  Antonio Bandares made his big splash onto the American scene in the 90's with roles in Desperado, Assassins, The Mask of Zorro, the 13th Warrior, and a few others.  One last option is Steven Seagal who debuted as an actor in '88, but really started pumping out films in '90 with Hard to Kill and 9 other action flicks before the end of the decade.

It's questionable whether those guys were even A-Listers, let alone biggest action star of the decade.
