Viking's just pissed because the Martians had some sort of religion.  John Carter was a great movie.

I'm pissed they had the "big reveal" in the first movie. I'm pissed they didn't leave the whole thing diffuse and unclear like the books. I'm pissed they mangled the various kinds of martians. I'm pissed they re-wrote pretty much all of the world building.

GF, yes I am pissed I read the books first. If I had read them later I would have more joy in my life, I agree.

And in seriousness, only two female superheroes with even close to marquee names have ever had movies made about them, and those were the cheap, unfaithful knockoffs that I understand Catwoman and Elektra were.  Also, the only straight-up fantasy/superhero hybrid to mix gods and metahumans is Thor (and its sequel).  I think a straight Wonder Woman movie would cover some pretty fresh ground (as would an Aquaman movie, which I'm a lot more excited about, even if a Namor movie would be better).

Trying to make a super-hero movie about female self hatred about body image or about being a step mom is pretty damn silly imho. Doing away with everything that makes the characters characters, e.g. taking an un-powered anti-hero and making her a hero, doesn't do you any favors with the established fan base. Those two movies were more in the vein of Mission Impossible, viz, a film with the name of something you like which is simply a movie about something else... though slightly similar.

If you are going to make a Wonder Woman Movie for gods sake do not make it about womens issues.

The new Danish tv series 'Arvingerne' started tonight. It's very good.

Concur.  Except for the implied blasting of Mission Impossible, a Brian De Palma classic.

That one took a while.  I've been sort of noodling on it for what seems like two or three weeks.

Of Mars and men

I've uprated it as a result of the last couple of watches, basically by the dint of wanting to watch it four times in a year: John Carter is an A.

While John Carter OF MARS wasn't as bad as it is presented as being it certainly isn't good. It was always going to have many of the same problems a wonder woman movie will have (and casablanca has to modern viewers), how can the trope-namer be considered interesting or relevant when the movie comes out decades after the trope went mainstream?
I don't think there has been a single movie starring a female superhero. What about her has gone mainstream? The BDSM?

Anyways, Superman is the trope namer for that genre and Man of Steel was a pretty good movie.

Jet: So what kind of woman is she? What's Julia like?
Faye: Ordinary. The kind of beautiful, dangerous ordinary that you just can't leave alone.
Jet: I see.
Faye: Like an angel from the underworld. Or a devil from Paradise.

That's cause women can't do enough push-ups to get into the superhero academy.

QuoteUh oh. Say it 'aint so! Superman has been around for hundreds of years! There's no way John Carter came first. Well sorry Supes it looks like you only arrived in Action Comics #1 in 1938. Bit late on that one. 'But hang on,' you're saying to yourself, 'Superman is NOTHING like John Carter, for one thing John Carter is on Mars!' Well that's where you'd be wrong.

Take two aliens from a distant planet. (Krypton/Earth) throw them into a new environment where nothing like them has ever been seen before (Earth/Mars) give them the awesome power of strength and jumping great distances (Supes/Carter) and write tons of serials detailing their exploits of saving the natives. (Supes/Carter) Wow, perfect fit right? Let me explain why it is. The planet stuff I think we can all agree on, but we all know Superman can fly! And has heat vision! And many other powers! Not when he started out he didn't! In Supes's first appearance all he could do was jump really far and act really strong, sound just like JC (John Carter) doesn't it?

What about the tons of serials business? Superman has had thousands of adventures published. Well, so has John Carter. Over the course of 11 novels John Carter has had thousands of adventures too. Whew!

QuoteSiegel and Shuster have themselves discussed a number of influences that impacted upon the character. Both were avid readers, and their mutual love of science fiction helped to drive their friendship. Siegel cited John Carter stories as an influence: "Carter was able to leap great distances because the planet Mars was smaller that the planet Earth; and he had great strength. I visualized the planet Krypton as a huge planet, much larger than Earth"

John Carter was the original super powered super-hero.

The trope I referred to was the John Carter - Superhero one. What I find most interesting about Wonder Woman is that she is the only truly original character from the golden age. Captain America is Alvin York, Batman is the Count of Monte Cristo, Superman is Moses and Green Lantern is Aladdin. Before Wonder Woman you don't have female heroic characters, after her they abound.

Superman is Moses? Makes sense since he can't shave.

Batman is on. Did you know that the silver throne The Joker uses is the same one used in Garbo's Queen Christina? Which is a copy of the actual silver throne in the Royal Palace in Stockholm? Makes you thimk.

Apparently I'm the only person here who has heard of Supergirl, Tank Girl, and Barb Wire.  All comic book based films with female leads.  Granted they all kind of sucked, but they did exist.

I've heard of Tank Girl, but I assumed she had a tank not superpowers.

Now that I think about it, Hit Girl in Kickass counts since she's nearly equal billing as the lead.
