Bears have been subjected to 200,000 years of evolution selecting for bears (and lions for that matter) avoiding humans like the plague. If anything history tells us about fear of animals is that the default position of any kid at the camp should be fear of the forest, just like we had of wolves and bears in the middle ages.
and of course, all teenagers will think of that before going alone in the woods to party :)
Every teenage in the world carefully evaluates the consequences of his decisions before doing something, it's a well known fact. ;)

What do Teenagers in the Sunderbans (for tigers) and Masai Mara (for lions) for shits and giggles. Well, to be honest the Masai teenagers are a bad example, since they are probably sneaking out armed to the teeth with spears to hunt lions...

there is of course a difference between being raised in one place, from birth to late teenage years than being thrown into a new environments.
The soldiers arrived on the colony 7 years ago.  Presumably, the first civilians&their families didn't arrive until a couple of years later, time to set up the camp & all.
So at most, the oldest ones arrived there 5 years ago.  Given it's the 10th piligrimage, a bi-annual time travel trip seems logical for this series.
Presumably, the first few shipments were scientists, gardeners & builders, before their families joined them.  I'd say 3 years top is a more reasonable assumption.

Yes there is a difference.

What does one or two or even three years have to do with anything? They have a fucking great 30 ft high fence around the place and they fight battles against packs of 30 foot tall therapod carnosaurs.

The only remotely similar situation in the western world are arctic environments with polar bears. On Svalbard any group leaving New Aalesund has to have a gun. I have a friend who has worked a few summers a a guide there on the grounds that A) She's a geologist, B) Likes guns and C) Likes skis.

In august a kid was killed and partially eaten by a polar bear. The kid was part of an english group of first timers who refused to take a gun with them. The experienced kids all unanimously warned the first timers beforehand. It is the only place on the planet that I know about where there is not only a right, but a duty to bear arms.

So not only am I amazed that the "in the know kids" were that stupid and that they were not armed with anti-dinosaur weapons.

Are Polar bears scared off by gun shots?  I'd carry two weapons in the artic.  A semi-automatic rifle and a large pistol in case something happened to the rifle.
I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011

Yes, polar bears are usually scared off by gun shots. If that doesn't work, they get killed by gun shots. They use hunting rifles. At least one per group.

This show's stupid.

It is a Timmay show.

That dire? :(

It has dinosaurs. It is tainted. I won't even pollute my eyes with such drivel.

It has dinosaurs, so I watched episode "3". It had a decent plotline with some real science and biology behind it. With a few plot holes of course. But they go and ruin it with a Dawson's Dinosaur Fortress plotline about how the paleobiologist plots to get old flame included in Terrannova project while husband is in prison to make a move...

Though, territorial nesting birds of today will not murder any animals living in the nesting area, but rather will decline to nest if it is not abandoned. Usually the area was chosen BECAUSE it was abandoned. If you intrude into an Arctic Tern nesting area they will try to scare you off, but if that doesn't work, they will abandon their chicks and try again next year. Even Salmon, who have a multi year breeding cycle and they return to hatching area to breed have a run every year.

Wait?  No feathers?

This show's stupid.
Aren't those protofeathers on the head?
I do not hate you, nor do I love you, but you are made out of atoms which I can use for something else.
