I'm looking for horror movie soundtrack suggestions. I'm trying to write one and I like to make an accompanying playlist for each of my projects, to put me in the mood.

I'm looking for atmospheric fare. And no synth stuff, which I know takes 90% of the best stuff off the table but it's not the mood I'm looking for.

So far I've got.

- The Shining (the orchestral bits) - and also the Ligetti stuff from 2001, Kubrick was great at picking creepy contemporary orchestral music.
- Midsommar
- Psycho

Not a long list, so I need help  :P

Alien, and maybe Aliens. The Thing. (Which has synths, though, IIRC)

The new Texas Chainsaw Massacre movies?

Exorcism of Emely Rose.

The Omen I & II, Poltergeist (all Jerry Goldsmith).

The Fly I & II (the Jeff Goldblum one)

The Orphan.

The Woman in Black

Bram Stoker's Dracula

From Hell

The Ninth Gate

Jacob's Ladder

X-Files TV soundtrack, if you can find it. Btw, was looking for soundtracks on Spotify yesterday, and it's EXTREMELY hit and miss, with some well known ones nowhere to be found except as fan covers or recordings from other orchestras.

Thanks for the suggestions! I had already discarded some of those but there's other stuff I'll check out.

Yeah, their movie soundtrack catalogue isn't too great. Fortunately when you create playlists you can mix in offline tracks, too.

That's a really great one, and quite underrated, IMO. I've used it extensively as soundtrack to many a RPG or boardgame session with a sombre theme.

The main theme of the film, Dracula's theme (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mi80O9uKB30) has been recycled for many trailers and other soundtracks over the years, I think.

Same dude did the Ninth Gate, which is also a great forgotten soundtrack.

The book has some cool ideas (and I'm not a Pérez Reverte fan), and Polanski directed the adaptation... yet the movie is very blah. Such a pity.

I remember a metal band I saw ages ago used it as intro before coming on stage. :D

I've seen it used as temp track in horror films, which then usually get much worse final tracks  :P

Yeah, I've seen it many times as placeholder soundtrack for trailers and advertising, and yeah, it's much better than their final soundtracks.

This Is Going To Hurt - BBC series based on a book by an NHS junior doctor (all on iPlayer).

Stars Ben Whishaw (who infuriatingly is a convincing junior doctor despite being 41 <_<) - and is very good. Trailer here:

Just saw someone on Twitter describe it as a period piece. It is set in 2006  :weep:

If it helps, I recently saw "Gasolina", the Daddy Yankee song, getting classified as "Classic Reggaeton". It's form 2004.

FunkMonk

Just saw a commercial for the "American Song Contest." Starts in March.

I don't think it will be anything near as endearing as Eurovision, sadly.

This Usual Suspects clip popped up on my feed.

We the viewers have no way of knowing if any of this explication is true or not.

So is Better Call Saul, which is set around the same time. I mean the lack of smartphones alone makes it look a bit dated. :P Hell, Facebook and YouTube were still brand new back then. :D

To add:
Black Death
The Alienist
Diablo III
The Witch
Philip Glass's Dracula Score
Pan's Labyrinth
The second half of There Will Be Blood
The Road

If given time, I could probably come up with more. A lot of games actually have some solid horror music a la Diablo III. Worth checking out if you're still looking for new ideas. Also, https://download-soundtracks.com is 100% *THE* definitive choice for accessing downloadable soundtracks and scores for almost every conceivable film including custom created extended cuts. I cannot recommend it enough.
