So many movies I haven't heard of! :D

I'm officially: out of touch

Hollywood trying to blow itself again.
The medievals were only too right in taking nolo episcopari as the best reason a man could give to others for making him a bishop. Give me a king whose chief interest in life is stamps, railways, or race-horses; and who has the power to sack his Vizier (or whatever you care to call him) if he does not like the cut of his trousers.

Government is an abstract noun meaning the art and process of governing and it should be an offence to write it with a capital G or so as to refer to people.

I've not seen Belfast - but I've seen the trailer and I suspect it's exactly the sort of film the Oscars will love.
it seems like a b&w movie. Oscar winner right there.  If it'd been a silent film too, it would have gone out with 3-4 Oscars for sure.

I've been watching Ranking of Kings.
Was reluctant to watch it as the synopsis and then the art style... It looks like a early 80s anime throwback.

Turns out to be a really good mature fantasy despite the actually excellent art.

I saw that one highly rated on Crunchyroll, but the preview images kinda turned me away from it. I see Crunchyroll has two seasons. Season two is available with subtitles only (which I prefer), while Season one is available here only dubbed in various languages (there is an English dub, fortunately). Crunchyroll is incredibly uneven in what they offer in Germany/Austria, because some series are licensed to Netflix or Amazon, so they might not be available on CR, or only a few seasons; same with their mangas. Amazon has a decent selection these days, but the vast majority is only available as German dub (no, thanks - I sampled some recent dubs, and it would take me forever to get used to it).

Netflix has a very good selection at this point, both licensed and self produced. They're still quite spotty on language options. E.g. Akame Ga Kill (or Legend of Galactic Heroes: Die Neue These when they had it) have only German or Japanese Audio and only German subtitles. Really depends on the show, though, and I feel they've gotten better with that.

Of older shows, they have a lot of Gundam stuff, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Akira, and of course the Studio Ghibli movies, like Nausicaa and the Valley of the Wind or Howl's Moving Castle. They have the Sword Art Online series, but not sure if I want to watch them or read the manga first.

You should give it a go. For me too everything just seemed for kids and not for me. The first episode or two you may be thinking it is what it appears to be on the surface but that soon cracks.

Netflix and language options will always enrage me as I remember when I lived in Switzerland they had so much....but with German subs only. Like. Wtf. That doesn't even help a large chunk of the locals.

On anime I tend to stick to dodgy sites streaming sites tbh.

Btw, I'm quite aware of the irony of me complaining about the new adaptation of Legend of Galactic Heroes having only German subs and dubs. :P

10,000 BC. Mammoth hunters face civilization. I came to this movie with very low expectations, but I think it's pretty great. It moves along at a decent pace, there's exotic locales, and an OK story. A grumpy person could complain about the historical inaccuracies, but that's missing the point of the movie completely IMHO. I've always found the era of the first civilizations fascinating, with the difference between hunter-gatherers, simple farming communities, and the cities of the first God-Kings. The movie evokes the sense of wonder that must have existed in contemporaries who didn't know from history books exactly what did and did not exist when it comes to exotic animals or advanced technology. This would be hard to do if the movie stuck to historical stuff. Many cultures have fanciful legends about founding ancestors, the start of agriculture etc, and seeing the movie as one such legend makes a lot of sense to me, and indeed the movie has the form of a narrated legend (narrated by a legend, thanks Omar Sharif). If I had made the movie I would have made the chick more than just a constant damsel in distress, but that's me.

It is loosely based on this book https://www.google.com/search?q=fingerprints+of+the+gods&oq=fingerprints+of+the&aqs=edge.0.0i512j69i57j0i512l7.3227j0j1&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8  and to say that it has some historical inaccuracies is about as mild as one can be for the nonsense contained therein.

The Power of the Dog. Very slow.

Final season of Better Call Saul is coming "soon"(TM).

Really loved the show. It started out a bit slow, and I feel they weren't sure where to go, but once they found their footing they've been on quite a roll (though I thought the end of the last season was "a bit" over the top).

I'll admit that I found 10,000 BC oddly enjoyable, particularly once they reach the city.

Trailer for new timey-wimey series by the writer of Giri/Haji (with a terrific cast) looks good:

I feel like this concept is a tad overdone already, but I loved Giri/Haji so I'll check this out.

Yeah agreed and similar (though I have a soft spot for time stuff) - the cast is also very strong. The lead was great in I May Destroy You, Caroline Quentin etc.

I also just like that it has someone saying "I'm brown and a woman - why the fuck would I want to go to 1800s London". It feels like someone needed to say it after sixty years of Dr Who

It can't be better than Yor, Hunter of the Future.
