Really? What the hell? Well I hope the Malthus clan got paid well at least.

I think I remember reading that Atwood sold off the tv/movie rights to Handmaid's Tale years ago, and as such she earned nothing from the tv series.

Yeah, she sold the rights to the studio who made the movie based on the book.  The movie is well worth watching btw.

Incidentally, I am pretty sure Atwood had a cameo in the TV series - although blurry one - in the scene in the handmaid indoctrination centre in iirc the first episode - she is the one who strikes the blow.

So apparently a movie based on the Uncharted video games has been in development hell in a while. Fans seem to have been pretty clear that they think Nathan Fillion would make for a great Nathan Drake.

So Nathan Fillion went ahead and made a 15 minute fan film. :D

I found it amusing, but it mostly makes me regret that we didn't see more Firefly, as the characters seem rather similar.

Edit: having looked at some Uncharted scenes, the line delivery IS pretty similar.
I am, somehow, less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein's brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops.

Woodstock (1970)

A mixed bag; some of the performances are great, others not so much.

High points:

Richie Havens performing "Freedom."  He had gone on first since no one else was prepared and by the time he was finished no one else was prepared so he kept doing encores until he ran out of songs.  He got up and did an extemporaneous version of "Motherless Child;" and it turned out great.

Carlos Santana; Santana was supposed to go on later and had taken a hit of mescaline.  He got his time moved up, and since he was a complete unknown at the time he couldn't refuse to go on.  So he played while thinking the neck of his guitar was a giant snake.  It's an incredible performance and it's amazing he could do that at all.

Sly and the Family Stone:  They were delayed about four hours too, or, as Sly would call it "Right on time".  Their performance of "Higher" is incredible.

The Who:  I prefer their performance at Monterey Pop, but this one is still great; made all the more impressive because Pete hated Woodstock and everyone in the audience.

Jimi Hendrix:  Including his legendary performance of "The Star Spangled Banner" and a killer version of "Purple Haze."

Country Joe and the Fish's "Fixin' to Die Rag," complete with lyrics and a bouncing ball.

 Moments:

Joan Baez singing "Swing Low Sweet Chariot;" weird enough on its own, and she really doesn't have the voice for spirituals.  Even at this point in her career Joan was already a museum piece; her other song was the labor activist song "Joe Hill," when even folk music had moved past that.

John Sebastian's far out talk about generations and grooviness, man.  To be fair Sebastian wasn't supposed to perform and had been asked to go on stage when there was yet another delay.  There's a possibility that he may have partaken in some drugs beforehand.

Low Points:

Jefferson Airplane:  They were delayed so long that the night was already over by the time they got on stage.  Throughout their performance they're obviously struggling to stay awake.

Janis Joplin:  Janis liked to have a drink or two before getting on stage; she was delayed so long that she had a lot more than that.  Her performance is okay; but Monterey Pop is so much better that it's a disappointment.

Wish they had included it:

Due to the water the Grateful Dead couldn't get a proper ground; so they kept getting shocked by their instruments.  At one point Jerry Garcia got blown back about 15 feet.  That would have made for a great scene.

Abbie Hoffman got on stage during The Who's performance and started to deliver a speech about the imprisonment of John Sinclair.  Pete Townshend smacked him on the head with his guitar and then threatened to kill the next person who stepped on stage.

Overall the sheer spectacle was amazing.  I think the performances at Monterey Pop were better, but the crowd itself at Woodstock was much more fascinating (as well as much larger and much more naked.)  I assume that everyone of the attendees they interviewed went on to become a vice president in an investment banking firm.
In Italy, for thirty years under the Borgias, they had warfare, terror, murder and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and the Renaissance. In Switzerland, they had brotherly love, they had five hundred years of democracy and peace—and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock

Yeah, he nails Drake's mannerisms pretty well.

Damn, I wish I didn't gift my old PS3 to my brother right now

The Brain

Lost City of Z. In contradiction of its title it's not a zombie movie. British officer who is married to a Cheeky Girl gets sent on a trip to Bolivia, and there discovers his destiny. Totally decent movie, managed to keep me interested. Don't know exactly which freedoms were taken with the story. The chick is hot.

The book on which it is based (non fiction) is great.  I wanted to catch this in the theatre, but it was pulled before I could get to it.

Is she listed as an exec producer? Maybe for season one?NOt sure. Maybe that was the other TV series they did recently on one of her books

You are correct - she is an exec producer for Handmade and Alias Grace.  So clearly she must have in fact earned something.

I saw that movie and liked it also. Good drama based on a real person's exploration - British explorer Col. Percival Fawcett.

Quoteeah, one of the things I disliked from this second season is how they undermine a lot of the world-building in the first season. For example now Handmaids seem have no trouble talking to each other in groups in plain view, even using their real names, when during the first season they were only allowed to walk in pairs and talk about approved subjects.
I took this as being due to the events from the first series. Rather than going for a full crackdown they decided loosening the rules was the way to keep control?

About half way through Handmaid's Tale season two. Not sure if i"m liking it.

Also why does the chauffeur guy get a gift of a fertile 15-year-old virgin? I thought young fertile women were in such high demand they'd be reserved for the ruling elite?

He is one of the ruling elites. Albeit a low ranking one.
And he only got her due to the request of his actual high ranking ruling elite boss.

The change that bothers me most is bringing people back from the colonies as they did.

The Larch

I finished the 2nd season of G.L.O.W. yesterday. It's a great little show, very recommended.

This season is more drama and less comedy (although there's still enough of that, and a couple of very whimsical skits), and less in your face 80s, which is a positive, IMO.

I believe it has been nominated for a few Emmys, right?

The Brain

Watched Clueless again. Such an awesome movie, one of my absolute favorites. :)
