When I lived in the US, I once worked in a shoot in an American Legion Bar in PA. Anyway, after the shoot I got drunk with the local clientele, and this guy half tongue-in-cheek, half seriously, upon learning where I was from goes and says "fuck you hispanics, you aren't white but we can't tell just by looking at you"

"Of color" is such a bullshit phrase anyway.
To sleep, perchance to dream. But in that sleep of death, what dreams may come?

The Larch

It seems that Variety had to update the article, replacing "woman of color" with "latina".

Darth Wagtaros

Meh. What about the green latinas?
PDH!

I'm probably one of the few humans on Earth that didn't find Queen's Gambit all that interesting... It felt like the Netflix show equivalent of an Oscar bait movie. She's indeed great in it though.

Josquius

I had no idea she was in any way Latina.

She grew up in Buenos Aires, but I believe she actually doesn't have argie ancestry. Spanish grandmother IIRC.

EDIT: wiki says her father was a Scottish expat in Bs. As.

The Larch

Yeah, it's really tenuous (she was born in the US, the family moved to Argentina when she was a baby until she was 6, and then moved to London), but she seems to be quite attached to it. In wiki it says that when the family moved to London she refused to speak any language other than Spanish to try to pressure her parents into moving back to Buenos Aires.

Anya Taylor-Joy (Queen's Gambit), "woman of color".

That colour must be "really really white".

I am thinking the fight against racism is reaching the stage where probably Christianity was when it was made official - all the spineless hangers-on who just see an opening are jumping on it with absolutely zero convinction or desire to actually further the cause.

This white blond lady being claimed as a Latina (in the context of that being a social disadvantage due to racism) is a prime example.

Josephus

Cultural appropriation.

Interesting, that if she didn't call them out by saying she didn't identify as a person of color (sic), they wouldn't have seen a need to change it.

Hold your horses there. This is just an extreme situation within the very particular US context, it has nothing to do with any global fight against racism. You're just showing your prejudices with this kind of stuff.

I have no idea if she was the one who called them on that or not, they might have reacted because of the wave of hilarity and facepalms it created on Twitter.  :P

I have always found American racial categories very weird - particularly in relation to Latino/Hispanic identities. I wonder if they'll last or if they are just the latest iteration of the way the boundaries of whiteness were policed and actually in a few years many people in those categories will broadly be seen as white, unless they are black? And a lot of Latino/Hispanic identities become like the old "white ethnic" identities: Irish, Italians, Poles etc.

The other celebrity/TV/thing I've seen on Twitter which always makes me think how weird the categorisation is is when every now and then people online have discourse around whether Jason Mantzoukas (who is Greek) is white or not.

He's the kind of guy who could pass for any nationality in the Mediterranean basin.
