Watched the latest incarnation of The Great Gatsby.  Once I got over the cartoonish style I really enjoyed it.  Leo put in one hell of a performance.

I think that the last 30 minutes or so, once the film drops the cartoonish style as drama starts to unfold, are pretty damn good.

The whole two and a half hours are great.

I agree.  The scene in the Hotel where Gatsby really believes she is going to tell her husband she never loved him and his reaction when things go sideways was excellent.

I also really liked the scene where he convinces himself that it is possible to turn back time.

The whole two and a half hours are great.

It almost lost me at the beginning.  It felt too much like Roger Rabbit meets Wall Street in style.  Also the story is supposed to be a bit more ambiguous about the American Dream.  But the style of the movie gave an over the top proclamation as to what side the director was on.  But I suppose that was the part you liked the most. :)

Ideologue

I like ornate spectacle.  I didn't mind that they ramped down the class criticism (and the novel's class criticism has a lot to do with old money/new money debate that no one in their right mind could give a shit about) and made it into a story far more interested in the romantic aspects and Gatsby's delusionality.

I am not sure what I mean Ide.  They ramped up the class criticism.  The poor people lived in that cartoonish hell hole in between where the old rich and new rich lived.  It was right out of a scene from Roger Rabbit.  The director couldn't be more over the top on that issue.

Ideologue

Iirc, it's less present than in the book.  All the stuff with George, his wife, and Tom, it's more subtextual in the film.  And the vision of the Valley of Ashes is pretty over the top in the novel.

I disagree.  The book is more ambiguous.  But if you read the book that way then I can understand why that wouldnt have bothered you.

Saw a bit more of Pacific Rimjob.  Sucks even more.

I loved how you could actually see the monsters in that one, with wide angel action with little obscuring of the big effects.
First Maxim - "There are only two amounts, too few and enough."
First Corollary - "You cannot have too many soldiers, only too few supplies."
Second Maxim - "Be willing to exchange a bad idea for a good one."
Second Corollary - "You can only be wrong or agree with me."

A terrorist which starts a slaughter quoting Locke, Burke and Mill has completely missed the point.
The fact remains that the only person or group to applaud the Norway massacre are random Islamists.

Finally binge watched The Pacific. Well done, but I liked the books better.
"there's a long tradition of insulting people we disagree with here, and I'll be damned if I listen to your entreaties otherwise."-OVB

"Obviously not a Berkut-commanded armored column.  They're not all brewing."- CdM

"We've reached one of our phase lines after the firefight and it smells bad—meaning it's a little bit suspicious... Could be an amb—".

You shouldn't put tags around that, man.  That's a selling point.  Is Dr. Rape Light in it?  What about Capt. Boomerang?

I don't know, just finished the episode where Bronze Tiger is recruited into the squad - dunno whom the other members will be. Deadshot is in the show, so I'm guessing he'll be a part of it too.
There's a few other villains brought into the how, but neither Dr. Light nor Captain Boomerang yet.  Off the top of my head, Deathstroke, Brother Blood, Pre-dead Solomon Grundy, Bronze Tiger, Deadshot, Merlyn, Count Vertigo, Firefly, The Dodger, Clock King, Shrapnel, quasi-Talia Al-Ghul, and Harley Quinn's voice.  They also show products from Kord Industries.  There's mentions of Bludhaven, Coast City, and Central City.  There are all kinds of little Eater eggs that I've probably forgotten about as well.  I love the show.
"Everything that brought you here -- all the things that made you a prisoner of past sins -- they are gone. Forever and for good. So let the past go... and live."

"Somebody, after all, had to make a start. What we wrote and said is also believed by many others. They just don't dare express themselves as we did."

Yeah, I think I said this about a year ago when I picked up LotM, but I've just about never seen such a really powerful turn for such a minor character and minor actor.  I mean, I am not at all certain Jodhi May has a line in this movie--or any movie.*

*She's actually a very successful TV/crap movie actress.  Constantly working, but I've never seen her again. -_-
Oh, she has 4 lines! :P
(With her sister when Duncan arrives to see Cora, After the battle when Uncas gets rid of the horses, When they enter the fort and she seeks her father ("popa! popa!) and in the fort, when Duncan comes to see Cora after he betrayed Hawkeye).

I'm not sure I noticed your review then, sorry.

Aye, that is what's won me over at the end. First season was pretty bad, plus the "corrupt rich guy of the week" plots were really dull. Season 2 has a bunch of villains, heroes and organizations from the comic books showing up every week - all with their season arcs - which give a lot of color and richness to the show. I really look forward watching every episode now, just to see what storyline gets advanced - will it be the League of Assassins trying to claim Black Canary back? Brother Blood and its cult of Supermen taking over the city? Deathstroke trying to get revenge on Oliver?
