Medivation Seeks Alzheimer's Breakthrough
Medivation Inc. (MDVN) is swinging for the fences and, if successful, its experimental
Alzheimer's disease treatment Dimebon will make all the highlight reels.
The San Francisco-based drug developer is expected to report late-stage data
by midyear—or much sooner by some estimates—that will be the second test
of Dimebon's effectiveness. The drug, being developed in partnership with
Pfizer Inc. (PFE), could bring in billions of dollars in sales and provide a new
option for the incurable, degenerative disease.
"If we can really show what we showed in our last trial... I think the drug will
have significant commercial potential," said Chief Executive David Hung, who
aims to file for marketing approval by year-end.
Success in the trial could lift shares to $80, according to Wedbush Securities
analyst Kimberly Lee, while its failure could send it down to $15.
Elemer Piros, analyst with Rodman and Renshaw, projects the drug's peak
annual sales at $4 billion and gives the study a 60% chance of success.
Medivation currently has no products on the market.
Much remains unknown about the disease, and many companies have failed to
develop drugs in the area. Those failures as well as lingering doubts about the
strength of Dimebon's data are reflected in the number of investors betting against
the company. Short interest in Medivation's stock was about 17% of its float.
Nonetheless, the aging population would make a new treatment incredibly
lucrative. About 5.3 million people have Alzheimer's disease in the U.S., and it is
the sixth-leading cause of death, according to The Alzheimer's Association.
Current treatments include Aricept, sold by Pfizer and Eisai Co. (4523.TO), and
Namenda from Forest Laboratories Inc. (FRX), but both have moderate, temporary
benefits. Aricept had worldwide sales of about $3.4 billion in fiscal 2008 but
will likely face generic competition later this year. Dr. Hung believes that
Dimebon could have comparable sales.
Previous data show that Dimebon may have improved and longer-lasting effects
than current treatments, along with reduced side effects.
