Gold alone is a terrible idea. Much better to invest in guns, ammo and supplies, because when the hordes of commies come to redistribute your possessions, all you can do with gold is throw it at them.

Stockpiling food is a good idea but easy to do.
You should also be sure to fortify your house though. Barbed wire. Lots of it.
