I don't know why you'd doubt it to be a coyote though.  The only thing that might look like a coyote is a fox, which has similar issues re: size in taking down a person.

There's no chance you mistake a coyote for a wolf though - much bigger.  Plus I have doubts there are any wolves on Cape Breton.

Early 80s.  The theory floating around is these coyotes were either wolf hybrids or rabid or something.

Exactly who I was thinking of when I said you wouldn't mistake a wolf for a fox.

Incedentally driving back from Ross River last Saturday I saw a lynx on the road.  I've seen them before twice and they bolt instantly, but this guy just sauntered off to the side, then just stood there are gave us a good, long stare.  It was amazing - he was maybe 30 feet away, perfectly still.  Beautiful animal. :wub:
