Congratulations, Jim. Looks like the problem's a defective HDD. <_<
That's what I suspected.  I was right.
 Bizarre behavior all around, I was suspecting it, but hoping it wasn't the case. Finally, a few minutes ago, Vista gave me a notification that it "wasn't able to read the HDD/SSD." Flash card reader went down, and I'm now scrambling with chkdisk to try to move data to uncorrupt sections of the disc.

The laptop is a Toshiba Satellite L505D-S5965. The HDD is a Toshiba MK2555GSX ATA drive. I'm online in Safe Mode with Networking; starting Windows regularly works now, right up until I try to open or right-click anything.

Any of you guys know of any nasty Vista viruses going around? I tried to start the laptop this morning and I haven't been able to start it normally yet. McAfee services won't start because of errors, the service for Toshiba's "Config Free" wireless utility is giving me stop errors, and the whole damn thing is running slower than molasses.

Before you even start, I'm just going to remind you that they wanted $1200 to repair the girlfriend's MacBook for damage that they only escaped liability for through a loophole. ;)

How can it rear its head? Unless you suggest... oh right.

I have Vista now.  It's not to bad.  Though it would be nice if I knew where the files I save on my PC go.  Also internal files for PC games.
I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011

Have you tried searching for them?

The application data directory was moved to "Users/YourName/AppData." It's a little more Linux-like that way.

Alright. Long story, but the system is stabilized now; however, I'm still looking at the Windows 7 RC.

For those that have used it (Grey Fox in particular), I see that between March and August, the RC is supposed to shut down the computer every 2 hours- is that the case? If it is, I'll just grumble and stick it out until October.

But did you pay the $1200?

The only way we got out of paying it was her father shouting for an hour at the AppleCare supervisor about how he's on permanent disability, that it was required for her school, and how Dell would still cover a laptop that was dropped all of a whopping 3 feet.

All true, but ya gotta admit, part of it's the salesman- and at one point, I thought the supervisor was going to suggest paying him the $1200 for his trouble.

Search on "%appdata%" in the search box on the Start Menu.
