Quote from: Razgovory on June 25, 2026, 10:52:18 AMSo you have answered my question:  No, we would not give Republican with a Nazi tattoo the benefit of the doubt.

No I haven't answered your question.  Hegseth never apologized or gave an excuse.  He doubled down as MAGA always does.  So there is no doubt to give the benefit of.

As for Platner, I don't live in Maine, but if I did, I would NOT have voted for him in the primary.

I suppose Hegseth not giving an excuse is better than Platner lying about it.  I also don't think the flag of Georgia is as bad as Nazi symbol.  But even with this less objectionable tattoo (similar to having, I don't know, a symbol from the flag of whatever country committed the Armenian genocide), I would not give him the benefit of the doubt.  I certainly am not going to give a guy with the Nazi tattoo the benefit of the doubt just because, shockingly, his views on a Jewish self-determination happen to line up with Hezbollah.
I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011

"Deus Veult"  from a guy whose views on Christian nationalism match up with Pope Urban and Bernard of Clairvaux

Not the flag of Georgia
We have, accordingly, always had plenty of excellent lawyers, though we often had to do without even tolerable administrators, and seen destined to endure the inconvenience of hereafter doing without any constructive statesmen at all.

Ah, the Christian "Takbir".  Somehow, I don't think his views fit very well with Pope Urban.  CC made this mistake as well, confusing Catholics and Evangelicals.  Still, I don't think it come close to the Nazis.  Kind a of objectionable, but like shouting the same thing that Jihadis shout when kill someone.

To be honest I'm not sure it's to do with Pope Urban or Catholics and Evangelicals as much as the imact of Paradox games on our politics.

The Pope Urban reference wasn't serious, a counter-absurdism to the equation of Graham Platner with Hezbollah.

However, I can't agree to taking the conduct of the Crusaders as lightly as you do.  It was, in its own way, in the context of its time and available technology, a Little Holocaust - quite literally so, as burning Jews alive en masse was standard procedure.  That is not taking into account the treatment of Muslims once those lands were reached, which was equally grisly. The fact that Hegseth felt totally comfortable brushing aside all criticism says a lot about him and the times we live in.

Honestly, I can't tell if that is suppose to be defense of Hezbollah or Platner.

QuotePlatner has maintained that accusations that he holds antisemitic or racist beliefs are unfounded and represent an attempt from establishment Democrats to defeat his campaign.

But critics have pointed to Platner's continued associations with antisemitic figures as proof that he might espouse such beliefs, including the January interview with retired Green Beret Nate Cornacchia, who has also promoted antisemitic conspiracy theories. Cornacchia has in recent months claimed that Israel was to blame for the assasination of Charlie Kirk and has previously made similar claims about the assisanation of President John F. Kennedy.

Platner said during the interview that he was a "long-time fan" of Cornacchia's channel.

And Gallego's endorsement arrives on the heels of yet another connection between Platner and antisemitism. On Feb. 24, Platner shared Peters' post on X that criticized Democratic and Republican politicians in Congress as being united in supporting a war in Iran. Platner reposted it with a comment that echoed Peters' view.

"As always, there's one thing that brings Republican and Democratic politicians together: sending other people's children to die in stupid wars in the Middle East," Platner wrote.

Peters advances antisemitic conspiracy theories, including Holocaust denialism and the idea that a "Jewish mafia" is in control of U.S. politics.

"We don't have any representation in Washington (DC)," Peters said, during a 2024 broadcast. "We have a bunch of people that are sold out to Jews."

Platner quickly deleted the post and his campaign issued a statement saying the team hadn't realized that it had been posted by a "despicable account," and only meant to share the C-SPAN clip that accompanied it.

There was a time when this would have destroyed anyone's chances in either the Republican or Democratic party.

Well, fortunately I'm not interested in voting for any party that has either Hegseth or Plattner in it.

Very much this. Their shit is unscapable.

In my discharge, my GF's sister lives in Maine so he's come up in conversation. She's disgusted by him - she can't vote though.
