Good lord England are so extra

Also example #657 of modern English presentation of Englishness looking nothing like the perception of Englishness from the rest of the world.

Wow. Is that an anthem for an exciting sporting event? Because I am not really feeling fired up here.

Listen to the French one and feel ready to charge at your opponents.  :frog:

I was reminiscing that the last big tournament I watched was the WC 2014 in Brazil and was trying to remember where the Euro 2016 was held and came up blank. Turns out it was France. I had completely forgotten about the tournament. I've also completely ignored the WC in Russia, though at least there I can claim I ignored it for political reasons. :P

Isn't that the case for most countries, though? I shudder at what other countries think of as "Spanishness".

Weird art, Sangria, Paella, Basque terrorism, taking siestas, and staying up all night mostly.

Which sure beats the older associations of fascism and Catholic fanaticism.

It was kind of like 1812 only the French won this time.

 No. It's a song for the announcement of the squad list.

And very influenced by loads of football ads over here - for Champions League or for emotional videos about football without fans or against racism etc. It's a sort of "football TV/social media clip" vernacular at this stage.

Maybe - it might just be particularly strong because we speak English and have an entire TV/film industry basically selling a version of Englishness.

Incidentally I think football can help shape this. I'm convinced that Football Italia has had a long impact on British perceptions of Italy

But yeah I think Valmy's probably right - I feel like the UK stereotype for Spain involves a lot of Miro and Picasso inspired graphics.
Let's bomb Russia!

Let's see what kind of weird announcement video we produce.

Then again, we know the team already, it might be out online and we didn't even realize it.

Oh it did list the players at the end. It is kind of the Mr Plow ad of football announcements.

That description sounds like a 1990s tourism commercial  :D - minus the terrorist part, I don't think we were trying to sell that.

Oh, I was reading a WaPo article the other day and the whole "Catholic fanaticism" is still truly alive.

The German team from the 70s through the 90s used to produce world cup songs. The best was probably the one for 1978 in Argentina:

Is it? Generally Americans tend to just assume most Europeans are godless atheists. Even the Archbishop of Canterbury is looked at with suspicion. "Probably a communist" we think.

The epitome of bad football songs remains this 1983 British song about Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, though. :P
