Thanks for the headsup - was waiting for the Hoplite series to finish before reading it in one go (I'm like that).

It is far better for the truth to tear my flesh to pieces, then for my soul to wander through darkness in eternal damnation.

Jet: So what kind of woman is she? What's Julia like?
Faye: Ordinary. The kind of beautiful, dangerous ordinary that you just can't leave alone.
Jet: I see.
Faye: Like an angel from the underworld. Or a devil from Paradise.

For long running series like this on topics I know nothing about, I like to wait until he finishes the series before reading. Otherwise I tend to forget what was covered in earlier parts as the weeks go on.
So, time to start reading the Carthage series. Looks interesting and I've been looking forward to it.

I'd be more interested on a series that covers Carthaginian society, economy, political structures, religion etc.  But it seems he provided some book suggestions.

Side Note

QuoteAlthough Carthage has an (unfair!) reputation for being a country of "peaceful merchants who tended to avoid wars,"1

If it had that reputation, it's news to me.  (yes I can see he is quoting a book from the 50s).  It's certainly not something one would get if you were board gamer that cut his teeth on games like Republic of Rome or Hannibal: Rome vs Carthage.

Isn't the problem that there's precious little remaining archaeological evidence (following re-colonization) and few original sources that were not written by the Romans?

Apparently it was proven a few years back that they did sacrifice children. I believe I posted about that in the archeology thread.

I once sold a horror script where the big bad was an ancient punic goddess. Pity it didn't get made, it was a fun one.

It did involve children sacrifice (well, teens in the story), not that I made a particularly academic approach to it  :P
