Argentinians do the same with dulce de leche.  :P
One of many reasons I really loved Argentina

It's a shame about the unpleasantness because we could otherwise be great friends. See also the only Harrods outside of London (now shut), Torre de los Ingleses, rugby, distinctive "teas" etc :(

WEll, I got the first shot of the vaccine on the 5th, and just teted positive for Covid yesterday. Yeah!

Nasty cough, headache, generally very achy, but no fever.

Christ.

Keep us posted Berkut.

I've been impressed with the carrot cake at my local Morrison's.

(I've been very impressed with UK carrot cakes in general, really)
I think UK cakes/desserts are often quite good - they are in no way sophisticated, or technically impressive as in Austria but they are tasty

In particular a custard tart, treacle tart or sticky toffee pudding :mmm:

Maybe the pickings are better around London, but I suppose to balance the scales...you guys suck at ice cream.

I've only encountered few decent ice creams, and the primary one is an Irish import of Italian ancenstry.

The latter.

Best carrot cake I've tried is the one made at a Barcelona coffee house ran by two Danish ex-pats. Stuff of dreams.

Fair and I am not a fan of ice cream except in specific contexts.

But best ice cream in the UK are very different. It's either from Scots-Italian ice cream shops (e.g. Capaldi's of Brora) or the great classics of Glasgow - I feel like the Irish-Italian import probably is linked to this little diaspora (our local bishop in the Highlands was Bishop Mario Conti, from Aberdeen and the recently deceased Archbishop of Glasgow was Philip Tartaglia ):

Or generally quite local West Country ice cream which is just based on the local cream and clotted cream production and amazing dairy.

Outside of that it's very meh.

My wife makes excellent carrot cake, and it's gluten free to boot.

Right, it's only good if placed in one's mouth. Kinda sucks as face cream or a painting material.

To sleep, perchance to dream. But in that sleep of death, what dreams may come?

Hopefully the first shot was enough to lower the risk of having a severe case.

So this is weird.

Started out with symptoms yesterday, mostly just normal flu stuff. Really bad cough (I suffer from chronic bronchitis - it is very much like that). Headache, achy, very tired. And my memory isn't working right.

But no loss of taste or smell at all.

Until just now. Like literally, in the last couple of hours, my sense of taste went from not noticeably changed to almost completely gone.

My sister sent me a pizza. I got it about 6:30, and had a slice. Was not super hungry. But it tasted fine. Put it away. Had another slice right before my DnD session started at 8, tasted fine.

Just had another slice at 9:45, and it tastes, well...almost tasteless.

Ugh, sorry.

My wife had this symptom too when she had COVID, and it was really hard on her. :console: Hope it doesn't last too long for you.

Did the loss of taste go away when her other symptoms went away?

It persisted for a while after, then came back, but it was abnormal (she described it as 'muted') and is now completely back to normal.  It took about a month for hers to completely return to normal.

Fwiw my two friends that had covid and loss their sense of taste recovered it pretty quickly. One had a very mild case and the other a "nasty flu" equivalent.
