Would it really kill you Dorsey to maybe postpone your regularly scheduled "covid interfering with my schedule its unbearable" post so it isn't right after Malthus posts that two of his very close family members are fighting for their lives because of the virus?

I deleted it but I'd point out the stupid covid rules are not just an inconvenience but are killing africans and probably making covid worse. The triborder area between DRC, Uganda, and Rwanda is desperately poor and there is significant food insecurity. There are a number of people dependent on the trickle of white tourists and by all accounts their numbers have plummeted.

The borders are pretty damn porous: basically closing them stops commercial interests like shipping and tourism, but people can still move. You get the worst case of all situations where the infectious disease can still cross the border but the population is worse off (generally infectious diseases do better in a weakened population).
They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.

There's a fine line between salvation and drinking poison in the jungle.

I'm embarrassed. I've been making the mistake of associating with you. It won't happen again. :)

My brother in law is now on a ventilator. His wife just went to the hospital today as well. Pretty grim. They have two kids, fortunately her brother is staying with them already (he had a mild case and recovered).
so sorry to hear that :(
I hope they both pull true.

Yeah, India and Brazil are in so much better shape now, thanks to visionary leaders that did not succumb to the silly preaching of scientists.

Wait the science says to close land borders that cut between tribal communities in Africa, but air travel is still cool?  :hmm:

I don't think any country locked down harder than India.

Brazil has gotten the most press of Latin American countries because its leader is so Trumpy (and they are just the biggest country), not because their experience has been so much worse. It seems like Peru may be getting hit the worst from direct effects of covid.

Australia lockdown was pretty hard. Melbourne had these in their 112 days lockdown; couldn't go more than 5km from your house for either groceries or exercising, Had a 8 pm - 5 am curfew, only 1 person per household could go out a day to get essentials.

That's a real lockdown.

Here, in Ontario, we're under "a lockdown", but you wouldn't know it looking out your window.

Island nations often go hard on these things.

Point conceded. India locked down hard but I shouldn't have said they locked down the hardest.

New Jersey seems like an outlier, in a good way.  Not sure why it would be the second best state in the country while neighboring a bunch of pretty bad states.

There just seems to be a fair bit of randomness to Covid-19.  I mean - why is Michigan being hit as hard as it is?  Why is Alberta?

The science said don't lock down borders at all - it was wrong. The argument - especially for an efficent authoritarian country like Rwanda - is you can control who's coming in more easily at one airline entry point with testing and quarantine. Also covid is still more likely to arrive from international travellers rather than local people and it is easier to control a border if there's a hard and fast rule.

The more nuanced and developed the more you need pretty decent state capacity especially around testing. A level that European states have consistently failed at. Rwanda's really impressive but I don't know if they'd be able to implement it either.

Also Mexico - in the UK I think it's a combination of Bolsonaro being Trumpy, plus as you say it's the biggest country and we don't have many reporters in Latin America but I think most of them are based in Brazil.

I was listening to a podcast and I'm not entirely sure the US - I don't know about Canada - has had a European style lockdown. I mean we've had most consumer-facing businesses closed for about 6 months in the last year. They can deliver but you can't got there so even if we don't have the mad distance limits there's nothing to do
