Can't think of many headlines that make me as angry as this:
QuoteITV News
@itvnews
Nurses and medics working overtime to save lives are facing increasing abuse from Covid deniers refusing to accept their relatives' diagnoses.
https://www.itv.com/news/2021-01-14/nhs-staff-facing-threats-from-patients-relatives-denying-covid

One of the UK insanities is while we don't seem to have many anti-vaxxers we do have a healthy minority of lunatics who deny that covid exists/is serious. Police have had to clear a few protests outside hospitals in London where people are shouting that covid is a hoax (one led by Jeremy Corbyn's loony brother  :bleeding:) and people sneaking into hospitals to take video footage of empty corridors as evidence covid isn't real. It pisses me off so much that you have people who will be working double shifts and doing everything they can in hospitals getting this bullshit when they step outside and there's a bunch of knobs saying it'sa hoax and they're liars. I can't imagine what it must be like having to deal with that and abuse from the relatives of people who are literally sick in hospital

Edit: Also GP showing their vaccine centre. Lots of plastic screens but not a large amount of ventilation going on

When will we stop wiping things down and open the fucking windows.

Orban says he wants the Chinese vaccine to be approved by Hungary ASAP so restrictions could be lifted by summer.

The Chinese have not even applied for EU approval yet.

And the data for them from Brazil isn't great - I mean they're safe but not that great.

Yeah probably this is next in the line of shady deals they have done with China. Worrying.

That's the standard French exonym. So is Ratisbonne (Ratisbona in other Romance languages).
Unlike, Charlesrepos (Karlsruhe), Sarreponts(Sarrebruck), Jumengarde (Stuttgart?) Foyer d'Homme (Mannheim).  :lmfao:

There are some really good ones in there.  :D

In Spanish Aachen is called "Aquisgrán".  :P

But nothing beats Munich in Italian, "Monaco di Baviera".

Yes, from its Roman (and Italian) name Aquisgrana.

Portuguese hesitates between Aquisgrano and Aquisgrão.
Latin sources also mention Aquæ Granni or Aquis Granum.

Good news in UK case stats - this is the South-East where the new variant makes up around 80-90% of cases:

The fear was always that if it was 50-70% more transmissible even full lockdown would not be enough to reduce R and the rate of growth needed to grow exponentially is lower. It looks like it's at the lower end of the 50% estimate and there's clear signs now that transmission can be reduced through lockdown and you can get R below 1 even of the new variant. If we were still floating at the figures we were last week it would have been really worrying.

And another reason I think most of our neighbours could do with locking down hard now.

Edit: Update on the vaccinations here with a bit of a breakdown. 45% of the over 80s have been vaccinated and 40% of the care home population. I feel like on current numbers we should be able to vaccinate both of those groups fully by the end of the month (and they'll then be more of less safe from mid-February). Hopefully.

Similarly, the old Catalan name for Siracuse was "Saragossa de Sicília".

Muenchen is thought to be derived from the word monk, so the Italian Monaco makes sense.
Given the importance of Munich I'm surprised it gets the qualifier instead of Monaco. Maybe because Monaco was considered Italian?

Saragossa de Sicilia I had to look up, it's probably because the city was called Sarausa in Sicilian.

Hey I got a question for you re: Portuguese.

Whenever an 'ão' shows up, that should be pronounced like 'an' right?  So São Paulo = 'San Paulo', João = 'Jon', etc.?  Right?

No, it's a different sound.

It's a very slight nasal n.  So much closer to Sow (rhymes with cow) than to Sown.
