The ironic thing, is, that even though Canada shut its border with the US, and Canadian provinces had a de facto ban on inter-provincial travel, Americans can get into Canada by saying they want to continue driving to Alaska

Isn't obviously lying to a border official some kind of offense?

I think you guys are all wrong and right on some level.

COVID should indeed be tacked differently in Manhattan than in suburban Atlanta or rural North Dakota (or Madrid vs Canary islands).
But this sort of crisis management is not a binary issue. What doesn't follow is that such a response must fall on the States. If anything, the required coordination effort demands much higher degree of competence at the federal/national level.

Yeah there was a story about some fuckers from Texas using that line so they could vacation in Banff.

Perhaps the weakness of the US system is that while the responsibility falls on the states the states lack the ability to respond, which is really a bigger problem with how the US funds the services its various governmental actors provide.   It you have a system where local actors depend on federal action then there is an obvious problem if the federal body does not react quickly and appropriately in response to all local circumstances.

It tried?  How?

Minister Hadju had said, in March, that the federal government, would enforce the strickier measures if the provinces didn't play ball.

Looking for precise Covid-19 news from March sucks.

Interesting, thanks for digging that up.  If the Feds had tried the only thing they could have done to get around the provincial jurisdiction over health care would have been to invoke the emergency measures act - and that would have been very problematic to put it in the mildest of terms.

We got pretty lucky in avoiding political shitstorm thru the early parts of the pandemic that even the grifter governments decided to do the right thing.

Today the first tourists showed up. Everyone over the age of 15 gets tested on arrival, the results are known within six hours and once you get the all-clear you can do whatever you like as a regular visitor.  :hmm:

A gang of Romanian thieves landed last week, ignored their quarantine, got caught breaking and entering local homes and businesses and 2 of them turned out to be infected. 16 local police officers were exposed and are in quarantine. Just a heads up, the usual scum will show up as well as regular tourists once you reopen.

Flew in from London. Whizz Air, a low budget airline has flights going to here.

The lockdown must be really bad for the criminal business.
I had a skip on my drive the other week, one of the things in it was an old metal shed. There wasn't enough in it to be worth selling the metal we thought. But nope. The scrappies still came and looted it.
